He once held the Guinness World Record for pull-ups, completing 4,030 in 17 hours. In Can’t Hurt Me, Goggins reveals a path that anyone can follow to push past limits, eliminate fear, and live life to the fullest. For Goggins, childhood was far from innocently playing outside without a care in the world. Instead, he experienced trauma from an abusive father and extreme prejudice and poverty in rural America. Statistically, Goggins was going nowhere and was destined for a life of depression and poverty. But, he defied all odds through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work. No longer was he a depressed, overweight young man with no future. By committing himself to weight loss and improving his test scores, Goggins became a U.S. Armed Forces icon. He has become the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller. He didn’t stop there, though. He did not have a typical carefree childhood. Instead of playing outside with friends, Goggins was controlled by his abusive father. His father, Trunnis, was a self-made businessman who owned a disco. Instead of hiring paid workers, Trunnis would force his family to work every night of the week. Goggins was already working at the rink by the age of six. Even at this age, his father would force him to work until midnight. Instead of taking him home, Trunnis would often leave him to sleep in the office. Goggins would hardly sleep at night, though, as the disco was loud and would stay open until the early hours of the morning...Related Book Summaries Never Finished by David Goggins The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van der Kolk Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenegger The Obstacle is The Way by Ryan Holiday The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho What I Know for Sure by Oprah Winfrey  Born a Crime by Trevor Noah  Becoming by Michelle Obama  Gandhi by Mahatma Gandhi  Grit by Angel Ducksworth DISCLAIMER: This is an unofficial summary and analysis.NOTE: This episode was first published on 4/2/2021 but updated on 28/1/2022. At age 22, he spent three years traveling across India and Europe as a monk. His daily routine was waking up at 4 a.m., taking cold showers, meditating, and eating. He would meditate approximately 4-8 hours daily. Half of Jay’s day would be spent on personal growth, and the other half serving others. Today, he has moved back into society. However, he aims to help people apply the monk mindset to busy city life. Jay Starts to Think Like a MonkJay had a friend in college who asked him to attend a session with a monk. At the time, Jay was reluctant. He did not believe the monk would know anything he did not already understand about the world. Nonetheless, he agreed to attend this lecture with his friend. To his surprise, Jay was immediately inspired by the monk. He was taken aback by the passion with which the monk spoke about the importance of service. Jay was so impressed he asked to meet the monk personally and eventually made the decision to become a monk. He is not expecting readers to become monks. However, he would like them to think like a monk. Jay outlines how you can start to think like a monk by separating the book into three parts. Later, he breaks this information down into steps.Part I: Let GoIdentityNegativityJay talks about how irrelevant sounds can increase your cognitive load. While living in New York, Jay was starting to feel exhausted for no true reason. After reading academic articles, he learned how having irrelevant sounds in your environment could increase cognitive load. You are wasting 80% of your cognitive load if you have news on in the background or loud drilling nearby. Seek to create an environment where you are intentionally creating sound—for example, choosing music that uplifts you and gives you energy. Learn more about your ad choices. Suggest and vote it up on the StoryShots app.About Vatsyayana Vatsyayana Mallanaga was an ancient Indian philosopher and scholar who lived around the third century AD. Once he had a conversation about sexual desires and lust with his student. That dialog prompted him to write the Kama Sutra as a guide to the topics of love and carnal pleasures for those who were as ignorant as his disciple. As a naishtika-brahmachari, Vatsyayana renounced worldly goods and relationships with women. He rejected the sexual aspect of existence at the level of action, speech, and mind. It was customary for the Vedic scriptures to offer rules, advice, or guidelines based on knowledge of the laws of the universe, rather than on personal experience. Being a Sage and a man who achieved self-knowledge, Vatsyayana developed a deep understanding of all the aspects of human life, even without taking part in some of them. Introduction The Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian treatise dedicated to sensual and emotional life, lust, and love. In its seven books, it explains the principles of Dharma, Artha, and Kama. Dharma refers to one’s duties and how to fulfill them. Artha represents the acquisition of wealth. Kama describes the five senses and the way they help us know and experience the world. The Kama Sutra’s goal is to walk the reader through the adventure of learning bodily pleasures and finding love. In Sanskrit, sutra literally means “thread” but also refers to a “text.” Kama means “desire, pleasure, love, or sex” and is the name of the god of erotic love.StoryShot #1: Whom You Can and Cannot Share Carnal Pleasures withAs you probably know, India has a caste (class) system. According to Vatsayayana, a man can cause conception of children in a ‘lawful’ manner only if he is married to a woman from his class. Women from higher castes and those shared by others are taboo. Along with that, the author specified eight reasons to have sex with a previously married woman. Finally, there are certain categories of females that can’t be deemed as suitable partners for sharing a bed. They include mentally challenged, gossiping, outcast, ugly or unclean ladies who lost their "glow," relatives, female friends, as well as women who have masculine features.StoryShot #2: Division of Men and Women into ClassesThis division has nothing to do with social classes. Instead, it uses the sizes of genitalia as a fundamental criterion. Men are divided into three categories: hare, bull, or horse. In a similar vein, there are deer, mare, or elephant women. To make sure a union is equal and fruitful, the size of men’s genitalia should match those of a woman. The author also classified partners in sexual pleasures according to their stamina. Every individual belongs to the following three categories: short-timed, moderate-timed, and long-timed. A true union can be achieved only when a man satisfies a woman’s desire, lust, and passion. A perfect union is when a man and woman reach the climax together. Since it takes longer for females to climb to the peak of pleasure, it is a man's duty to sexually stimulate her prior to sex. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN MAY 2021. UPDATED IN DECEMBER 2021. AngelList is a website designed to pair investors with startups. He has also invested early, in companies like Uber, Twitter, and Postmates. As a result, Naval has gained a wealth of experience. He frequently advises on wealth, happiness, and life. This advice has been shared across a range of tweets, interviews, and essays.Author Eric Jorgenson curated this advice into The Almanack of Naval Ravikant.Eric broke the book into two main sections: wealth and happiness. Each section’s chapters contain various tweets, comments, and statements from Naval. Eric edited the words to flow well, but he has tried to share the ideas as unchanged as possible. You don’t have to read the book from beginning to end. Instead, you can flip to specific chapters to examine that particular topic.Eric Jorgenson's PerspectiveEric Jorgenson is a writer, podcaster, investor, and product strategist. He’s blogged and created online courses for several years. He writes and podcasts about personal leverage, building wealth, and good living, on ejorgenson.com these days.Eric felt inspired to write The Almanack of Naval Ravikant because of the insights he gained from Naval. He decided to collect Naval’s ideas and pass them on to others in a more accessible and organized way.StoryShot#1: The Creation of WealthAccording to Naval, wealth is not money. Money is the tool used to transfer wealth.Instead, wealth is things that can earn for you and be productive, even while you sleep. Wealth is inventions, business ideas, computer programs, or products. People will buy and pay for these, even if you’re not there to hand them over, directly. The crux of his argument is this: you have to work hard to gain wealth, but you have to work hard the right way. You can work really hard at the wrong thing, and you’ll never have a chance of getting rich. That’s where specific knowledge and working in the right direction come into play.
