261: Five Things I Thought I Knew About Golf and Fitness

Over the course of 260 plus episodes on topics ranging from golf and fitness to mental game, diet, and nutrition, and many other topics revolving around the health and well being of golfer, there has been a lot of information to take in. In a world where information is overly abundant and can many times be contradictory or downright confusing, sometimes it’s important to take a step back and takes some time to digest and process what you’ve learned. I know that for me, as the host of a show where I get to talk to super smart people in a wide array of topics, the amount of information can sometimes reach an “overwhelming” status. I can often go into the mode of asking myself questions like . . . “How am I supposed to remember all of this?” “How am I going to be able to apply all of these great tips and advice in my real life?” “Why don’t I know this stuff already?” “How are these people so much smarter than me? So if these questions ever cross your mind when you are listening to some of our incredible guests, just know that I’m right there with you. I mean it’s hard to keep up with the best in the world So in today’s episode, I wanted to reflect on just a few topics that over the years I have seen through a couple of different lenses and have recently either shifted my view a bit or realized that there may be a different way to do things than I have in the past. While none of these are massive revelations and some of them may seem very obvious, I often find that what seems like it should be obvious may take us longer to learn that we would think. The following are in no specific order of importance or scale, just simply some thoughts that came to mind that I have been kicking around and thought you might be interested in. 5 Things I Thought I Knew About Golf and Fitness: 1.) Diet: There is no Right or Wrong way to do it! A recent podcast and article by Jason Phillips introduced the concept of “The Triangle of Awareness” which specifies that nutrition should be looked at from the angle of what is the goal, Performance, Aesthetics, or Longevity. And the kicker is that each of these is much different than the other when it comes to structuring how you should each. 2.) Do Golfers Need Cardio? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always believed that there were benefits to doing cardio in some form, especially short burst intervals or what some would call HIIT style cardio. But over the past year or two, I have come to view it as being even more important. Now, do they “NEED” cardio to truly be better at golf? Probably not. But do I recommend everyone do some sort of “cardio,” my answer is now YES. Listen in to hear more of the explanation. 3.) Walking the Golf Course is Important I never walked the golf course growing up. In fact I really didn’t play much golf growing up, so when I did start playing, I just thought you were supposed to take a cart all the time. Turns out I missed out on a lot of benefits that I am just now learning to appreciate. 4.) You can’t do it all at once. This is a lesson that I have had to learn over and over and over again. And I am sure this isn’t the last time that I will have to recreate this “Ah-Ha” moment for myself. Multitasking is a farce and the more you try to do at one time with your workouts, your diet, your business, the less real work you will actually get done. Pick a goal, focus on it intently, work your butt off to achieve it and then set a new goal. Why is this so hard to remember? 5.) Are we (18STRONG) a golf company? Are we a fitness company? Well, I would say we are neither and we are both at the same time. But ultimately, we are a habit-building company for people that are into fitness, golf, and enjoying life more. We are like you. We want to get better at a lot of things and we want to help you do the same. Hopefully, we can help you by sharing what we’ve learned over the years, but don’t think we aren’t learning just as much from you on a daily basis! So thank you! 254: Scott Harrington: Battling for More Than a Tour Card

Today I am especially excited to have on our special guest, PGA Tour Pro Scott Harrington. Often we are asked “what exactly is 18STRONG and what does it mean?” And, to be honest, sometimes I have trouble explaining that. In the broadest form, we are an online golf fitness company. But if you’ve been following 18STRONG for a while, you know there’s a lot more to it than that. We like to think of “18STRONG” as more of an adjective to describe people like Scott and golfers like you that are willing to do what it takes to get better both on and off the course. 18STRONG golfers are in it to maximize the enjoyment of the game, appreciate the rewards on the course, and cherish the memories created on the links. Which is why I’m so excited to have Scott on the show. He embodies what 18Strong is all about: not only has he been working towards his dream of playing on the PGA Tour for the past 17 years, but it’s the battles off the course that he and his wife have endured in the last several years that make the fulfillment of his dream that much more amazing. Today I am especially excited to have on our special guest, Matt Cardis, founder of Golf in Your State and The Golf Wall Project. We often hear the term “growing the game” on social media, and TV coverage, but to be honest, it’s pretty rare that we see new initiatives for growing the game that are outside the box of the traditional world of golf. But, golf photographer and golf nomadic traveler, Matt Cardis is touring the country in a sprinter van. What started as a journey to capture golf imagery across the states has turned into a much bigger mission for Matt by breaking down stereotypes, connecting golfers and non-golfers, and ultimately serving different communities across the nation all under the over-arching theme of golf. This initiative is known as the “Golf Wall Project” and while each community is different, it’s the people and the stories that continue to inspire Matt. To truly grow the game in populations that may have no experience with golf or know any golfers has become Matt’s passion. Matt Cardis’ Background Photo: Matt Rommel Photography Matt Cardis is a Professional Photographer and full-time traveler based out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Founder of Cardis Creative, LLC, he’s dedicated the past 3 years to showcasing the culture of American Golf and the “Modern Golfer” with Golf In Your State. I know how best to stretch your dollar to achieve your content goals while on the road utilizing the places I go and the people I connect with along the way.” Highlights from this Episode How his dream of being a golf course photographer and traveling the country morphed into Golf In Your State and what the Golf Wall Project is today. What a standard day in the life living out of his Mercedes Sprinter van looks like and what made him go from his marketing job to living on the road chasing the next great golf experience. What the Golf Wall Project is and how he is breaking down barriers and stigmas with what golf can be all about and who can participate. The different initiatives he has taken on in his travels from beach cleanups to feeding the homeless, and how all of his projects like Golf in Your State nad Golf Wall Project revolve around the idea of connecting others through golf and bettering their community in the process. How he stays active and in good health fitness-wise when he spends so much of his time on the road and how to get connected with him, register to volunteer, and check out his work. 252: The Lost Art of Playing Golf | Karl Morris & Gary Nicol

Today I am especially excited to have our return special guests, Karl Morris and Gary Nicol. Karl and Gary were on the podcast back in Episode 234 after the release of their best-selling book The Lost Art of Putting. Well, the guys have done it again with their latest book The Lost Art of Playing Golf. The “Lost Art” books are unlike any instructional books I’ve ever read and I think once you get your hands on it you’ll agree. They stress that most of us put too much emphasis on the mechanical side ignoring the fact that there truly is an “art” to playing the game of golf. Highlights from this Episode They talk about the amazing success they’ve seen from their previous book The Lost Art of Putting and the waves of messages from golfers around the world talking about how much it’s helped.Does the shot create the swing or does the swing create the shot? Gary talks about how too often we have the best swing and a not so great shot and how the focus on the intention of the shot and the swing is just a means to the shot. What they feel is the good and the bad with the influx in technology that has come about in the last decade and what they mean when they call the golf course a “training ground.”Why it’s so important to know you don’t have to have the perfect golf swing because you’ll never have the perfect conditions when playing golf. They also talk about how you can hit the exact same shots with different swings each time. They dive into strategy: practical aspects and tactics they work on with their players and what you can implement to help your game both: mental and physical such as walking the course backwards to get fresh eyes on it and playing no pins golf. Why they focused on golf course architects and architecture in their book and what they want us golfers to get out of studying golf course designs.
