Episode 235: Joel Smith - High performance training and the feet

This episodes guest is Joel Smith from Just Fly Performance. Joel Smith, MS, CSCS is a NCAA Division I Strength Coach working in the PAC12 conference.  He has been a track and field jumper and javelin thrower, track coach, strength coach, personal trainer, researcher, writer and lecturer in his 8 years in the professional field.  His degrees in exercise science have been earned from Cedarville University in 2006 (BA) and Wisconsin LaCrosse (MS) in 2008.  Prior to California, Joel was a track coach, strength coach and lecturer at Wilmington College of Ohio.  During Joel’s coaching tenure at Wilmington, he guided 8 athletes to NCAA All-American performances including a national champion in the women’s 55m dash.  In 2011, Joel started Just Fly Sports with Jake Clark in an effort to bring relevant training information to the everyday coach and athlete.  Aside from the NSCA, Joel is certified through USA Track and Field and his hope is to bridge the gap between understandable theory and current coaching practices. Episode 234: Ryan Harrison - vision training to enhance performance

This episodes guest is Ryan Harrison from Slow the game down. Ryan Harrison, has a degree in Exercise Physiology from University of California at Davis. Ryan has worked with Dr. Harrison on improving athlete’s visual performance on the field since 1999.   Through the years he has worked hundreds of baseball stars including position players,; Carlos Beltran, Mike Sweeney, Sean Casey, Jose Guillen, Jonny Gomes, Adam Dunn, Angel Pagan, Giancarlo Stanton and Hunter Pence in the 2000’s, and  Rajai Davis, Hunter Pence, Joe Panik, Matt Duffy, Conor Gillaspie, Ryan Goins, Kevin Pillar and Trevor Brown in recent years. He currently working 2012, 2010 and 2014 World Champions San Francisco Giants.  He previously has worked with the Toronto Blue Jays 2011-2015 and Philadelphia Phillies 2009-2012 as well as 9 other Professional Baseball Organizations over the last 14 years.   Collegiately he has worked with the 2016 NCAA Champions Coastal Carolina, the 2012 NCAA Champions Arizona Wildcats,  the 2013 NCAA Champions UCLA Bruins, as well as Oregon State, Wichita State, Kentucky, and Long Beach State.  Ryan has worked with many Collegiate Softball programs, individual athletes in various sports such as MMA, Motocross, NHL, NFL, WTA, AVP, PGA.   Following his work with top professional and amateur athletes, he conceived the idea of training necessary performance skills with digital technology. Episode 233: Greg Potter - Nutrition, stress, and sleep

Greg has a PhD in nutrition, circadian rhythms, sleep, and metabolism, and he is cofounder and Chief Science Officer of Resilient Nutrition, whose products we discuss in the show. Episode 229: Derek Hansen - Creating a Sustainable Culture of Speed Within an Organization

Derek is an International Sport Performance Consultant that has been working with athletes of all ages and abilities in speed, strength and power sports since 1988. His coaching career started in Track and Field, providing instruction to sprinters of all ages eventually working with collegiate sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. His career evolved rapidly working closely with some of the top performers in the world as a coach and a consultant – including Olympic medalists, world record holders, Canadian National team athletes, and professional athletes from numerous sports. He worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Simon Fraser University for 14 years, the first non-US member of the NCAA. He also serves as a performance consultant to numerous professional teams in the NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL, as well as major NCAA Division 1 programs throughout North America, specializing in speed development, strategic performance planning, return-to-competition protocols and neuromuscular electrical stimulation programming. Derek is asked to speak on speed development and high performance training on a regular basis for major events around the world and has also authored a number of books, chapters and journal articles on these subjects. Episode 228: Cal Dietz and Chris Korfist on RPR, injury, foot training, and periodization

This episodes sees the return of Chris Korfist and Cal Dietz. The guys were previously on the episode 215 along with JL Holdsworth to discuss RPR. Unlike most facilities who are staffed by young coaches who rely on their recent playing career and “cool” factor, Slow Guy Speed School is staffed by Chris Korfist, a “sprint guru” with an international following. With over 55 all-state sprinters and countless other high school all-state athletes, and over 20 years experience, he knows what is appropriate for the athlete in the room and not so concerned about what the pros are doing or someone else journey to where they got. In fact, the methods have been so effective, Chris has consulted NFL teams, Big 10 Universities, Olympic team and U.S. Special Forces. Cal Dietz has been an Olympic Sport Strength and Conditioning coach for numerous sports at the University of Minnesota since 2000. During his tenure, Dietz has trained athletes that have achieved 400+ All-American honors, Teams that have won 33 Big Ten/WCHA championships teams and 10 NCAA Team Champions. He has consulted with Olympic and World Champions in various sports and professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, MMA and Professional Boxing. Episode 227: Denis Logan - Embracing the journey from EXOS, to the NFL, to Pro Rugby

This episodes guest is Denis Logan. Denis Logan joined Munster Rugby as Head of Athletic Performance in May 2018. He previously worked as an assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and has worked with elite athletes for over a decade. Prior to his time with the Cleveland Browns, the New York native was Director of Performance for the US Pro Sports division of EXOS where he worked with professional and elite athletes from a diversity of sports, including American football and Olympic events. Episode 226: Brandon Marcello - The life of a high performance sports consultant

This episodes guest is Brandon Marcello With over 20-years experience in the performance enhancement industry, Brandon Marcello, PhD brings innovation, education, and proven application to the worlds of sports performance, health, fitness, and wellness. Originally from Sarasota, FL, Marcello has worked in the professional, Olympic and top collegiate settings. He has also served as a consultant to various organizations and media groups. Having extensive involvement in both the applied and research worlds, he has implemented successful, high-performance training programs for professional, Olympic and collegiate athletes. For the last 22 years, Dr. Marcello has taken individuals and organizations to the next level through multi-year and time-limited human performance consulting projects in the United States and abroad. His work in conjunction with Draper Laboratories for the U.S. Special Forces has provided a deep, multivariate understanding of the drivers of performance in the battlefield, while projects for professional teams and elite athletes includes performance solutions for nutrition, training, recovery, and high-performance team development. Prior to this, Marcello served as the Director of Sports Performance at Stanford University. In this role, Marcello oversaw all aspects of athletic performance enhancement of the 36 intercollegiate sport teams. Acting as the chief administrator for the Sports Performance department, Marcello's responsibilities included, but were not limited to, designing facilities and equipment layout, strategic planning, developing nutritional and recovery strategies, overseeing staff development, directing methodology and driving innovation. During his seven years at Stanford, Dr. Marcello initiated cross-departmental collaboration with many of Stanford's academic departments such as the Stanford Sleep Center, Center for Longevity and Life, bio-engineering, Residential and Dining enterprises, Stanford surgery, Hoover Institute, and the departments of neuroscience and genetics. He was the creator of the highly-acclaimed Performance-Based Dining concept that has been successfully implemented since 2011, and has received national media attention (See Sports Illustrated, November 7, 2011 among others) and numerous awards. Prior to his arrival at Stanford, he served as the Director of Performance for USA Softball. Hand picked by Head Coach Mike Candrea, Marcello developed and implemented all athletic development programs for the 2008 Silver Medal U.S. Olympic Softball team, 2007 Gold Medal Pan American team and 2006 Gold Medal World Championship team. In 1999 he was approached by Mark Verstegen to join him in Tempe, Ariz. to help create EXOS (formerly Athletes' Performance (AP)), a world-class training facility for professional and elite athletes. While at AP, Marcello improved the performance of a number of athletes from the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, PGA, LPGA, and WTA. Prior to his work at the Arizona facility, Marcello was a Performance Specialist at the International Performance Institute (IPI) of the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. There he prepared top college football players for the National Invitational Camp (NFL Combine) dramatically improving their draft status; in many cases to first and second round picks. A recognized author, researcher, and international presenter, he routinely speaks around the world on a number of topics pertaining to elite-level performance. His work appears regularly in numerous journals, textbooks, and periodicals. He also has served as a consultant to U.S. military, many Division-I programs, International Sports Federations, as well and Adidas, Under Armor and Nike. Marcello holds a PhD in sports nutrition from Baylor University, and a MS and BS in Exercise Science from Marshall University. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Marcello is also recognized as an RSCC*E by the same organization. He holds two certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES).
