Healing and Leadership (Part 6) w/ the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart
It is an honor to welcome two incredible leaders onto the podcast today, Mother Superior Gloria Therese and Sr. Regina Marie of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Several years ago, their community of Carmelite Sisters reached a crisis point. The Order had been founded during a period of religious persecution in Mexico and compounded by individual trauma they were collectively in need of deep healing. Mother Superior and Sr. Regina Marie discovered Dr. Bob’s ‘Healing the Whole Person’ and soon the entire Community had taken the program. Together, the Sisters recount this profound experience of rediscovering their stories and learning to trust that God can use our brokenness to minister to the world. Theirs is a story of hope and a picture of God’s deep desire for our wholeness. Guiding Quote: I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known I will guide them. How might you take the first step to become more integrated in spaces where you tend to do this? In prayer, ask Jesus where he has been in your story. Ask him to show how he has been with you through hard things, even if you didn’t feel his presence at the time. Invite Jesus into any specific memories which you may find yourself revisiting. Ask him to reveal himself in the scene and to be with you there. Healing and Leadership (Part 4) w/ Peter Herbeck
Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ‘healing the whole person’ shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever. Key points: Peter’s early life was heavily influenced by his father, a war vet who was successful but an alcoholic Healing began in Peter’s father’s life with Jesus and then led to healing in the family Peter was introduced to counseling during treatment for his father Well into his fifties, Peter didn’t address his healing head on, but simply tried to ‘trust God’ more Dr. Bob’s book, “Healing the Whole Person” was transformational for Peter and catalyzed his adult journey of healing Wounds from Peter’s early life around public failure led to beliefs and vows Even though there was grace and no deep sin in Peter’s life, he was experiencing brokenness as an adult because of unresolved trauma Healing allows you to walk in the joy of the Lord Acknowledging our brokenness and leaning into Jesus is necessary for leaders Practical Application: If you are in ministry, ask yourself if you feel pressure to be ‘perfect’ all the time. Find a trusted friend or ministry colleague who you can share honestly with about your shortcomings. Take the time to ask yourself, “What do I really want or desire?” What is in your heart once you cut past any sin or fear of failure? Journal what comes up. Join Jake, Bob and Christopher as they take a deep ‘excavating’ look at the transformation and healing of identity through the power of an honest and loving spouse. Sexual healing is more than just the healing of sexual things, it’s a deeper healing of our identity as men and women made in the image of God. Overtime, within the safety of a loving marriage, each man has discovered areas of their hearts that are in need of redemption. Humility before God and our spouses, and a willingness to invite the Lord into our wounds leads to powerful healing and wholeness. Guiding Quote: “It is not in our power to not feel or to forget an offense; but the heart that offers itself to the Holy Spirit turns injury into compassion and purifies the memory in transforming hurt into intercession.” (CCC 2843) Key points: Sexual healing is more than a healing of sexual things, it’s a healing of our masculinity and femininity How the excavation/ archaeological process is a rich analogy for the cooperative healing that can happen between God and ourselves The importance of where we find our identity The power of an honest spouse in sexual healing If we’re not living out our commitment of marriage in love for our spouse, then we’re also not honouring God God is the ultimate healer, because there are things that are beyond our human capacity to transform The enemy distorts and sets up idols that prevent us from seeing the God’s goodness in world as he intended it Breaking open an analogy of self-condemnation: coming ‘face to face with the hunchback in the woods’ Practical Application: Where do I find my identity: in what others think or in how God sees me? What in my life have I turned into an idol, and how might that get in the way of loving my spouse well? How would my perspective shift if I saw the idols in my life as icons providing a window to God? Where have I made agreements with the opinions of others that has led to self-condemnation? Go to the Lord in prayer and ask him to love you back to wholeness in those places. Sexual Healing (Part 6) with Christopher West
This week, Jake and Bob spend time with an old friend, Christopher West. They reminisce about their spiritual history with each other, and Christopher gets real about his own journey of healing from rejection wounds. Christopher is well known as ‘the Theology of the Body guy,’ but after nine years of hiding his own brokenness behind masks in his marriage, he was confronted with the reality that he was living out his brokenness with his wife. Christopher walks us through his testimony of learning to take off the masks to let God love him.
