The Healing Process (Part 1)
Jake and Dr. Bob get practical about the healing process and provide examples of what it looks like to allow Christ to be the Healer. Note to listeners: there was an issue with Jake's audio in this episode and we are working to fix this for future recordings. Thanks for your patience. Key Points: Examples of inner healing happen throughout Scripture The pattern of healing through Christ looks like this: Always begins with an encounter with Jesus, Him seeing the person and their true dignity Jesus speaks the truth with hope and love Jesus offers himself as a remedy The Raising of Lazarus is a great analogy of our woundedness and healing through Christ There has to be awareness and desire for healing to take place. This takes humility. We have to understand what what it means to be human in order to enter into healing Begin the process of healing by deepening self-awareness and identifying where you are currently struggling Let Jesus be the Healer, rather than worshiping the process Some insights and specific examples modeling prayer ministry as part of the healing process Examples of internal barriers to healing Practical Application: Begin your healing journey by praying about questions that Dr. Bob posed: Where am I struggling in my relationships? Where are the areas of habitual sin? Where are the desires that are disordered in my life, even if I’m not acting on them? Where am I struggling emotionally in situations? Integrated Healing with Dr. Tom Nelson and Fr. Burke Masters
Jake and Dr. Bob are joined by two special guests: Fr. Burke Masters and Dr. Tom Nelson. As experts in their respective fields, the four men discuss integrated healing of the whole person: body, soul and spirit. They draw on their experience of working together at healing retreats through the JPII Healing Center and share how integrated healing has changed the way they minister. We hope this blesses you! Key Points: Healing has to do with wholeness and communion - no matter what angle you’re approaching healing from (body, soul, spirit), it’s important to keep the whole person in mind Sculpting, ‘Visio Divina’ and the power of touch for integrated healing Dr. Tom and Fr. Burke’s experience with leading healing retreats based on Dr. Bob’s model Dr. Tom discovered integrated healing as a skeptic who attended a retreat from Dr. Bob Fr. Burke also discovered integrated healing Dr. Bob’s and his book ‘Be Healed’ Dr. Tom and Fr. Burke share how practicing integrated healing has brought them joy in their fields Practical Application: Consider whether you give weight to one area of healing over the others: body, soul and spirit (mind). How could you approach your own healing or the journeys of those around you in a more integrated way? Explore a new method of prayer using Visio Divina. Security, Maturity, Purity (Part 3)
Note to listeners: there was an issue with Jake's audio in this episode and we are working to fix this for future recordings. Thanks for listening! Jake and Bob conclude the series on Security, Maturity, Purity, by talking about Purity. The development of this area is about much more than sexuality. Purity begins when we orient ourselves towards love by both seeing God and seeing like God. This episode challenges us to see ourselves and others more through God’s eyes with the healing gaze of love. Guiding Quote: Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. - Matthew 5:8 Key Points: How the Gospel story of the Healing of the Blind Man of Bethsaida illustrates Security, Maturity and Purity Purity of heart means seeing God and seeing like Him. Seeing like God means not just seeing someone’s brokenness but seeing them in their wholeness… this includes ourselves When we talk about purity, we need to look at the heart not just actions We must encounter God in his fullness through security and maturity before we can truly embrace the wholeness of God’s love for us At the root of an addiction or impurity is an absence of love. When we invite God (love) into our impurity there can be healing. Do we trust him enough for this? It’s inadequate to simply talk about ‘right or wrong’ in the Church An indicator of purity is the quality of relationship we offer to others: being able to admonish another and at the same time love them through a problem they have Impurity is any deviation from love The power of the healing gaze of Jesus Practical Application: Where is there addiction or impurity in my life? Where am I not living in freedom, and what does it mean to hold Jesus’s hand in that area? What does it look like to admonish others and be ready to love them through their struggles? Healing and Leadership (Part 7) w/ Patrick Lencioni
After an incredible series on Healing and Leadership, Jake and Bob sit down for one final episode with renowned leadership expert Patrick Lencioni. Lencioni is founder of the Table Group, a consulting firm which has helped businesses across the globe in their quest for organizational health. He is a practicing Catholic and a force behind the Amazing Parish project. Pat opens up about his short fuse (and new peace he's discovered), why people-pleasing is so deadly, and why the only kind of leadership is servant leadership. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did! Guiding Quote: Do I want to be a leader because of what it does for me, or do I want to be a leader because it’s a huge responsibility to love and serve others? - Patrick Lencioni Key Points: Pat shares how he met Dr. Bob, began to dive deeper into healing, and how that’s impacted his leadership What we might be missing in the story of St. Paul’s conversion Why agreeableness is not a healthy position for a leader The difference between ‘niceness’ and kindness and love What a lack of conflict indicates Lencioni’s 5 healthy functions of an organization Vulnerability-based trust Healthy conflict Commitment Accountability Collective Results Why all leadership is servant leadership The difference between head level knowledge of faith and heart level relationship with Jesus, truly believing that God loves us uniquely and unconditionally Pat demystifies what leaders are like in the business world and and why it’s not as scary as we might think to bring faith into the workplace Pat’s advice to leaders: purify your intentions, get healthy (work towards wholeness and integrity), and shepherd the people closest to you Practical Application: The next time you catch yourself being ‘agreeable’ when you have a different perspective, speak up instead. Is your faith something that you believe with your head or a person you’ve encountered in your heart? Don’t be afraid to go to God in prayer with the truthful answer. Be honest with him about any areas of doubt in his goodness and love. Take some time to identify who those 'closest to you' are, who you may be called to invest more of your leadership efforts into and shepherd well. Healing and Leadership (Part 6) w/ the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart
It is an honor to welcome two incredible leaders onto the podcast today, Mother Superior Gloria Therese and Sr. Regina Marie of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. Several years ago, their community of Carmelite Sisters reached a crisis point. The Order had been founded during a period of religious persecution in Mexico and compounded by individual trauma they were collectively in need of deep healing. Mother Superior and Sr. Regina Marie discovered Dr. Bob’s ‘Healing the Whole Person’ and soon the entire Community had taken the program. Together, the Sisters recount this profound experience of rediscovering their stories and learning to trust that God can use our brokenness to minister to the world. Theirs is a story of hope and a picture of God’s deep desire for our wholeness. Guiding Quote: I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them. - Isaiah 42:16 Key Points: How the Sisters came into contact with Dr. Bob’s work None of us pass through childhood without some need for healing because it is such a vulnerable time in our lives Sr. Regina Marie shares about a family tragedy that occured in her teenage years and how she found healing when Jesus came into the memory Sister reveals how unhealed trauma affected her leadership with the Carmelite Sisters What artificial harmony is and how that impacts relationships in a community A brief history of the traumatic events which shaped the history of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart What the Carmelite community looks like now that they’ve been through the ‘Healing the Whole Person’ program A word to other religious communities who may find themselves in need of healing Practical Application: Do you find yourself living out ‘artificial harmony’? How might you take the first step to become more integrated in spaces where you tend to do this? In prayer, ask Jesus where he has been in your story. Ask him to show how he has been with you through hard things, even if you didn’t feel his presence at the time. Invite Jesus into any specific memories which you may find yourself revisiting. Ask him to reveal himself in the scene and to be with you there. Healing and Leadership (Part 5) w/ Brett Powell
In this episode, Jake and Bob host Brett Powell on the podcast. Brett is co-host with Jake on Way of the Heart Podcast, a conversion for men about journeying through life with a heart fully alive. Brett has extensive experience in leadership within the church and a passion for men’s ministry and fatherhood. Brett gets real about the heart of leadership: relationship with others and relationship with God, and why our relationships at home matter more than anything else as leaders. Thank you, Brett, for the gentle reminder to re-evaluate what we’re prioritizing in light of what’s most important! Quote: We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus. - St. John Paul II Key points: Work is an easy place to go for affirmation, but parenthood is where our true selves show How leadership manifests in fatherhood How performance orientation can get in the way of unconditional love What does ‘freedom to fail’ mean and look like? The importance of desiring good for the people you lead The heart multiplies itself into the people it leads The yoke of Christ vs the yoke we put on others The impact of shame and an unhealed heart in leadership Why prioritizing relationships in the home matters more than anything else The currency of trust is foundational in organizations Practical Application: Assess: where are you currently putting your resources either in your business or your family life? What does this communicate about your priorities? Read Fr. Jacques Philippe’s article on Fatherhood (below in the shownotes). Choose to do one thing this week to build trust in a family relationship, work relationship and/or a friendship. Take time to reflect on where you might be living out of a performance orientation. How might this be affecting your relationships and what’s one thing you can do this week to work on that? Healing and Leadership (Part 4) w/ Peter Herbeck
Today, we welcome Peter Herbeck from Renewal Ministries onto the show. Peter would describe his younger self as a troublemaker and rule breaker, acting out because of an alcoholic father. But, when his father miraculously and voluntarily turned himself in for treatment after his sister called on the family to pray, Peter was introduced to healing: clinically and through Christ. It was a step in the right direction, but his healing journey was far from over. Join our conversation as Peter shares how his understanding of ‘healing the whole person’ shifted in his fifties and how this has impacted his leadership forever. Key points: Peter’s early life was heavily influenced by his father, a war vet who was successful but an alcoholic Healing began in Peter’s father’s life with Jesus and then led to healing in the family Peter was introduced to counseling during treatment for his father Well into his fifties, Peter didn’t address his healing head on, but simply tried to ‘trust God’ more Dr. Bob’s book, “Healing the Whole Person” was transformational for Peter and catalyzed his adult journey of healing Wounds from Peter’s early life around public failure led to beliefs and vows Even though there was grace and no deep sin in Peter’s life, he was experiencing brokenness as an adult because of unresolved trauma Healing allows you to walk in the joy of the Lord Acknowledging our brokenness and leaning into Jesus is necessary for leaders Practical Application: If you are in ministry, ask yourself if you feel pressure to be ‘perfect’ all the time. Find a trusted friend or ministry colleague who you can share honestly with about your shortcomings. Take the time to ask yourself, “What do I really want or desire?” What is in your heart once you cut past any sin or fear of failure? Journal what comes up. If you have unresolved trauma in your life, seek support. Now, Jackie is leading others to wholeness in Christ by addressing all aspects of their lives through her groundbreaking program: Reform Online. Space is still available in the Lent 2022 intake.
