274: How Playing Competitive Sports Supports Women's Leadership Success

It’s been proven that playing competitive sports continues to contribute significantly to the success and leadership growth that women experience in later life and in their careers. Joining me to share her first-hand insights and key observations from her own career and from recent important research on this topic, is Lara Abrash, Chair of Deloitte US, the largest professional services organization in the United States. Originally drawn in by Deloitte’s social impact contributions, Lara began her time with the company 30 years ago, having held various leadership positions including Chair and Chief Executive Officer at Deloitte and Touche LLP. Working alongside over 170,000 professionals, Lara leads the Board of Directors with a purpose-driven mission to see diversity and inclusion at every level. To kick off the conversation, we dive into Deloitte’s pivotal study on the relationship between girls and women in competitive sports and leadership in the workplace later on in life. Lara shares her own experiences of playing softball, baseball, and tennis, revealing the essential skills she learned along the way. Next, we delve into the power of sports to foster skills development that women often don’t have the opportunity to develop elsewhere. We also discuss whether or not there is a place for emotional vulnerability in the workplace, and what changes when leaders are honest about their experiences. Join us today to hear all this and more!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Lara Abrash, and her 30-year background leading up to her role as Chair of Deloitte US. 273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Note: This is a special airing of a “holiday favorite selection” and is a repeat of our Finding Brave holiday episode #208. “You just have to believe that there’s a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it’s amazing what happens in your life.” – Kathy Caprino  As we approach the end of another year, once again I’m happy to share this special “Holiday Selection,”  featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2024 with even more bravery, inspiration, and motivation to pursue and achieve your most important and meaningful goals. Today, I’m excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection — the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful, and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at. (Note: I don’t perceive “failure” the way many others do. I view it as a vital learning” opportunity — as an effective experience that, when viewed from a positive framework, helps us get much clearer on who we are, what we need to thrive, and what we  really want in our lives. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, deep way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” – far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In this episode, I explore what I’ve found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future. As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that’s happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it.  At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy it! I’d love to hear how your answering these six questions impacts you and what it reveals. And  I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you’re interested in hearing from. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas! I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year and I’m looking forward to connecting with you and serving up fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2024 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be. If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face? I’m so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations has sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects. Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to. _______________   Need some great podcast production support? Are your thoughts and actions regularly dictated by a harsh inner critic? Do you find yourself filled with feelings of unworthiness and that you are undeserving of love? If so, you may well be dealing with the symptoms of core shame. Our guest, David Jurasek, knows firsthand the devastating impact shame can have on your life and relationships, and he joins us today to shed light on this urgent topic. Drawing on his 25 years of experience as a mentor and therapist, David’s work is defined by his belief that your biggest source of sabotage is driven by core shame. He is the founder of Powerful and Loving, a community helping men and boys become powerful leaders who cultivate thriving relationships. Additionally, he is the author of My Heart Is A Muscle, a book that he wrote with the hopes of moving 500 men in the deepest way possible. 267: Why Consent Is a Must for Connection and Respect in Life and Work

Relationship expert, trainer, speaker, and author Dr. Eric FitzMedrud uses his wide-ranging expertise to teach men how to hone their consent skills for stronger relationships and hotter sex, and also has witnessed how consent enhances connection, reward, respect and fulfillment in work and organizational settings as well.  As a therapist committed to helping people live more meaningful, connected lives, Eric wrote the book The Better Man: A Guide to Consent, Stronger Relationships, and Hotter Sex to offer much-needed tools for instruction, healing, and growth. As you’ll discover in this episode, these tools can assist us in nearly all aspects of our lives. Today on Finding Brave, Eric paints a clearer picture of consent-driven leadership, highlights some of the systemic barriers that hinder the creation and growth of a consent culture at work, and delves into the emotional responses that often make the word “no” so difficult to hear and accept and what to do to shift that. We also touch on the important role of curiosity, open dialogue, vulnerability, and more. For a broader view of consent and how it can help you build deeper connections and mutual respect in life and work, be sure to tune in today!   Key Highlights From This Episode: •   How toxic masculinity negatively impacts men, not just women and others. [03:55] •   What consent is and why many of us lack the skills to communicate our needs. [08:10] •   The biggest problems that men have with consent in their intimate relationships. [14:29] •   Why receiving a “no” can be so difficult to deal with, the role of curiosity, and how to empower yourself using the things within your control. [17:00] •   The importance of (re)examining unconscious assumptions in relationship contracts. [24:11] •   How to ask better questions and encourage participation in consent conversations at home and at work. [30:40] •   A look at what consent-based leadership looks like and why open dialogue is crucial. [35:52] •   An invitation to add to and share your takeaways from this conversation with us! 266: The Sexy Lie: How Self-Objectification Damages Women's Lives

As our reality becomes more entwined with social media, an ever-increasing number of girls and women are engaging in self-objectification. And while gaining money, resources and agency may seem empowering, there are hidden impacts to this behavior that can have far-reaching consequences for women, girls, and our society as a whole. Today’s guest, Dr. Caroline Heldman, describes this phenomenon as ‘the sexy lie’ and outlines it in her new book The Sexy Lie: The War on Women’s Bodies and How to Fight Back. Dr. Heldman has spent the bulk of her career engaging in issues around gender and social justice. She has published seven books on gender justice and politics and is a professor of Critical Theory & Social Justice at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in numerous documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. She is also the  Executive Director of The Representation Project, a political commentator for Spectrum and CNN, and co-founder of the New Orleans Women’s Shelter, the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, End Rape on Campus (EROC), Faculty Against Rape (FAR), and led the End Rape Statute of Limitations (ERSOL) that successfully abolished the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. In today’s conversation with Caroline, we tackle the difficult topic of how women are sexually objectified, the way it’s normalized within mainstream culture, and how this makes it virtually impossible for women to achieve full value in society. Caroline provides a comprehensive breakdown of ‘the sexy lie’ and how mistaking attention for power has led to the common misconception that self-objectification is empowering before unpacking the profoundly harmful effects of objectification on girls and women. Listeners will also hear her expert insights on the role of capitalism, profit margins, and the patriarchy in women’s sexual objectification and the structural changes it will take to alter these entrenched systems of power. Our conversation also explores the insidious impact of objectification culture in the workplace before hearing some much-needed advice on what women can do to fight back against internalizing the sexy lie and how to change society for the better. It’s no secret that our culture objectifies women, but by facing it head-on, naming it, and recognizing it for what it is, we can find new ways to ignite change and fight for better outcomes. Caroline is a deeply inspiring guest and I personally learned so much from this conversation.. Be sure to tune in to this today and share it with the men and women you know.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Dr. Caroline Heldman, her definition of “the sexy lie” is, and the harmful effect this has on girls and women.  [01:52] • The overlap of power, influence and impact; why women tend to shun power; and how power is regularly defined in masculine terms. [09:57] • How society (de)values women; the gains and setbacks over the past few decades. [12:44] • The appeal of self-objectification and how we mistake attention for power. [15:14] • An overview of society’s deeply entrenched anti-fat bias, diet culture, and the harmful misconceptions we have when it comes to weight and size. [17:15] • How to understand power in the context of monetizing your image, reinforcing the male gaze, and the consequences for one’s self and broader society as a whole. [19:11] • Sexual objectification, how it dehumanizes people, and the many harms that this causes, especially for marginalized women. [24:17] • The serious impact of porn and social media on younger generations and their understanding of sex. [30:07] • Caroline’s advice on how to navigate objectification culture: recognizing to what extent you’ve internalized the sexy lie, reframing your outlook, and changing your habits. [35:31] • How our culture of objectification affects women in the workplace, and the extensive work that still needs to be done when it comes to creating an equal and just society. 265: Reaching Top Success in Male-Dominated Fields While Staying True To Yourself, with Manuela Nicolosi

If there’s one person who is intimately familiar with what it means to be a woman making her way in a male-dominated field, it’s today’s guest, Manuela Nicolosi, an Italian international soccer referee, speaker, and entrepreneur. Manuela is an undeniable trailblazer and has a series of barrier-breaking accomplishments to her name. Not only is she the first woman to referee a Men’s European Final (the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019), but she is also the first Italian woman to referee the final of the Women’s World Cup. In today’s conversation with Manuela, we talk about her journey as a soccer referee, her love of the game, and the challenges she’s faced while navigating a field dominated by men. We learn about the strict rules that governed Italian soccer when she was growing up, how this prevented women from becoming referees, and the change in regulation that took place when she was only 15, opening up new opportunities for women. Not only did this allow her to pursue her huge dream of making a name for herself in soccer, but it paved the way for her to inspire other young women to do the same through her work as a public speaker. Tuning in you’ll learn about many of the skills you need to master as a top-level referee, such as being able to make quick decisions under pressure and remaining calm and balanced when players and fans are (sometimes aggressively and angrilly) challenging your decisions. We then go on to examine how these skills can translate to other leadership positions and why learning to accept your mistakes and take them in stride is such a game-changer. Today’s episode is deeply inspiring and a powerful reminder of what it means to follow your dreams, no matter the odds, so be sure to tune in!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Learing about our inspiring guest today: Manuela Nicolosi. [00:21] • Her strong relationship with her father, their shared love of soccer, why he objected to her playing professionally, and how he came to support her dream of refereeing at a high level.  [03:13] • Italy’s outdated rule that only men could be referees, and the Federation’s decision to open up opportunities to women. [05:41] • The tragic loss of her father when she was 16 years old and her desire to make her father proud through her work. [09:53] • Manuela’s experience of being the only woman in a male-dominated field, the challenges she has had to overcome, and how her dedication helped her persevere. [13:56] • What Manuela has learned about how to remain focused when she makes a mistake and what this can teach us about leadership. [19:24] • The resistance and active opposition you face from players and why it’s important to remain calm and firm in your decisions. [23:27] • The intense selection process to referee for the World Cup, what it was like for Manuela to referee the Finals, and the tremendous pressure she faced as a woman.
