You can’t always choose the people you work with, but you can choose to pursue having the best possible working relationship with them. Joining us today is return guest Michael Bungay Stanier, author of the new book How to Work With Almost Anyone: Five Questions for Building the Best Possible Relationships, to talk about the importance of working relationships and how to create ones that are safe, vital, and repairable. Listeners may recognize Michael from Episode 210 of Finding Brave, How to Begin Doing Something That Matters, where Michael shares his keen insights on the three key components of a worthy goal and what it means to commit to one. Michael is the author of six books to date, the combined sales of which go well beyond one million copies. Michael is also the host of 2 Pages with MBS, a fascinating podcast where his exceptional guests read the two most noteworthy pages of a favorite book and share how reading it impacted and shaped them. In today’s conversation, we dig into the complex nature of working relationships, why they are so important, and how to have the best possible relationship with the person across the table from you. Michael shares why he felt compelled to write his latest book before outlining some of the essential questions he poses to readers and how they can improve working relationships today. He also provides a detailed breakdown of how to have a keystone conversation and explains how these can help you maintain and improve relationships by giving one another permission to check in and keep talking about how well (or poorly) you’re working together. Working with people will always be messy and challenging, but when you commit to having the best relationship possible, incredible things can happen. 260: Are You an Anxious Achiever? Turn Your Fears into Your Superpower with Morra Aarons-Mele
Anxiety in the workplace is far more common than many of us are willing to admit. And by refusing to normalize it we are making it even more difficult for people to navigate mental health issues and thrive at work. Our guest today, Morra Aarons-Mele, is no stranger to anxiety in the workplace and is the author of The Anxious Achiever: Turn Your Biggest Fears into Your Leadership Superpower. Morra has done powerful work in raising awareness for mental health in the workplace and has a long list of achievements to her name. In addition to being a best-selling author, global speaker, and consultant, she is also an entrepreneur and communications executive. She is the founder of Women Online, an award-winning social impact agency and she created its database of female influencers, The Mission List, both of which were sold in 2021. Morra is also the host of the award-winning podcast, The Anxious Achiever, where she helps listeners rethink the relationship between their mental health and leadership. In today’s conversation with Morra, we discuss what inspired her to pursue her work as an advocate for workplace mental health and why anxiety in the workplace needs to be normalized and understood differently from the way it is today. She shares the details of her own complex mental health journey and unpacks how our biased systems aren’t actually designed to serve large groups of the population — like minority groups, women, and neurodivergent individuals — and what steps you can take to make work work for you (and how to identify what you need to help you get there). We also explore why self-awareness is essential to good leadership, what it means to make anxiety your ally, and how to assess when anxiety is a response that will be productive or counter-productive for you. To learn more about anxiety at work and how to shift your relationship with your mental health, be sure to tune in to this thought-provoking conversation with Morra Aarons-Mele! Today's guest, Peter Shankman, is a prime example of what happens when you harness the positive aspects of ADHD (and other types of neurodiversity) for your personal benefit. When he was formally diagnosed in his mid-30s, Peter had already founded and sold two companies and realized that the traits that previously labeled him as “troublesome” were actually his greatest assets. 257: Spirituality, Faith and Creating Deeper Meaning In Your Life and Work
Humans are spiritual beings but unfortunately, because we are so influenced by external factors, many of us have become disconnected from our spiritual selves. This results in people making life and career choices that do not align with their core values or purpose, which is causing a great deal of suffering. Today’s inspiring guest, Joseph Holt, is on a mission to help people make work (and life) decisions that allow them to live their lives in a way that is true to their core values, ideals and beliefs. 255: Expanding Emotional Intelligence To Become a Great Leader
Our understanding and definition of what excellent leadership is can vary greatly across continents, countries, and cultures. It is also influenced by individual characteristics such as age, gender, and heritage. And as newer generations enter, and progress, within the workforce, so too do their values and preferences. One of the most notable shifts currently taking place is how we value emotional intelligence (particularly in the workplace) and the growing recognition of its role in cultivating exceptional leadership. Joining us today on the show to help us unpack this nuanced topic is Luis Moreno, an expert in emotional intelligence and human-centered leadership with a special interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Luis has long been an advocate for the important role of emotional intelligence when it comes to leadership. His many years at various Fortune 500 companies exposed him to a range of leadership styles and taught him how to recognize the type of leaders that bring out the best in their employees. This inspired him to establish his platform LuisMorenoTCBPN (The Twin Cities Business Peer Network), where he is training a new generation of leaders to be more effective, more inclusive, and more human-centered in their thinking, behaviors and communication. In our conversation, we discuss the concept of emotional intelligence, how it can help you become a great leader, and how Luis is seeing this play out in organizations around the world. He goes on to explore the notion of empathy, its role in the workplace, and why understanding and respecting someone’s perspective doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with them. Luis also breaks down the responsibility organizations have when it comes to investing in leadership training and how this will help them avoid key problem areas such as a lack of engagement from employees and a high turnover rate. Today’s conversation will leave you with a new appreciation for what it means to be a thoughtful and conscientious leader. Tune in to hear all of Luis’s thought-provoking insights and observations on how the world is re-examining empathy, emotional intelligence, and leadership and why that re-examination is critical for the success of businesses, employees and work cultures today. Key Highlights From This Episode: Introducing Luis Moreno, his career trajectory, and what his work at multiple Fortune 500 hundred companies has taught him about leadership. [01:30] Understanding the complex conversation on being ‘liked’ versus ‘respected’ as a leader and the downsides that accompany the fear of not being liked. [06:27] The image companies project about themselves concerning issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion, versus the reality of what they’re actually implementing, and how this affects employees. [11:48] An overview of emotional intelligence, how it can make you a better leader, and why it results in superior decision-making and improved outcomes in the long term. [16:18] The younger generation’s expectations of leaders and why they require leaders to be transparent about their values. [19:21] Training people to understand the impact of their views and how emotional intelligence helps us connect with people who do not share our perspective. [26:55] How emotional intelligence can help you gain an understanding of why an employee or teammate is underperforming. [35:31] Recognizing how corporate environments often don’t allow minorities and people from marginalized communities to excel. [37:48] Learn where you can find Luis and his training online. [39:32] Luis’s parting message on emotional intelligence: the value of finding appreciation for someone else’s interests and how this can be applied to the workplace. 252: Being Highly Sensitive Is a Superpower - Embrace and Leverage It
Being a sensitive person can often feel overwhelming, especially in today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected world. And these challenges are frequently compounded by the many misconceptions that people have about sensitivity as a trait. As a sensitive person himself, our guest today, Andre Sólo, is deeply familiar with these challenges and has spent the better part of his career dedicated to shedding light on what it truly means to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and what we all need to understand better about sensitivity. Through his work and new book, Andre is making profound contributions to those of us who identify as sensitive (even if we don’t know it yet). He is the co-founder of the website, Highly Sensitive Refuge, the world’s largest online community for sensitive people, and recently co-authored the extremely helpful book The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World. Andre is also a researcher and speaker and serves as Chief Make-It-Happen Officer of Introvert, Dear, a supportive community and resource for introverted and sensitive individuals alike. Tuning in today, you’ll learn all about what it means to be a sensitive individual, including why HSPs tend to be creative, empathetic, and highly conscientious, and why it’s so easy for them to become overstimulated. Andre goes on to unpack some of the problematic messaging that society regularly gives to sensitive boys and girls, and how this can result in people suppressing and hiding their sensitivity, rather than embracing it as one of their greatest strengths. Our conversation also explores how sensitive children are impacted by their upbringing and environment, and why the best thing you can do as the parent of a sensitive child is to accept and encourage them just as they are. Today’s episode is filled with fascinating insights into what it means to move through the world as a sensitive person and provides a helpful guide for what we can do to better understand and support sensitive individuals, allowing them to embrace and leverage their unique superpowers. As a highly sensitive person myself, I’m grateful to Andre for his groundbreaking work in this field. To learn more about this deeply human trait, and how it can shape a person's entire identity, be sure to tune in for our conversation with Andre Sólo! Key Highlights From This Episode: Understanding the traits of a highly sensitive person (HSP), and the misconceptions that many people have about sensitive people. [02:45] What neuroscience teaches us about how sensitive people take in information in a much deeper way. [04:36] The correlations between being introverted and highly sensitive, the difference between these two traits, and what each of them measures. [08:54] Why being sensitive can help you be an excellent leader. [11:11] Some of the drawbacks of being a sensitive person, why sensitive people often experience strong emotions, and how they can further increase their emotional intelligence. [14:23] The three distinct ways that sensitivity can come across in individuals. [17:54] Learn about the ‘boost’ effect in sensitive people, why sensitive people are more affected by their environment, and how they can benefit from therapy, meditation and spiritual practices. And that allows us to notice things that others miss, and to make connections and find new ideas that others might not make.” — @justandresolo [0:03:28] “We've spoken to highly sensitive service members who credited their sensitivity as being one of their most important traits as a military service member. So it's a very kind of flexible and valuable trait.” — @justandresolo [0:06:58] “Sensitivity comes with many strengths, both physical and emotional, and in terms of creativity and intelligence. At the same time, your brain is putting all this extra work in. So there's a cost to those gifts. And that cost is overstimulation.” — @justandresolo [0:07:22] “Just as highly sensitive people get more out of therapy, I think they probably also get more out of spiritual practice. And I can say for myself, personally, that meditating is life-changing and transformative.” — @justandresolo [0:26:46] “If you have a sensitive child, the biggest thing you can do is to accept and encourage them.” — @justandresolo [0:34:12] “If you're picking up the stress, the sadness, the anger, of all the people around you, especially if you're feeling it very vividly yourself, that is exhausting, uncomfortable, distracting.
