Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, now with over 500K downloads and ranked in top 1.5% of over 3 million podcasts worldwide! “You have a lot of knowledge and expertise, but if you continually doubt the strength of your opinions and views, or the importance of sharing your ideas, you are going to lose the ability to shape where your career (and life) is going.” – Kathy Caprino Confidence is key as you step into being the most powerful and impactful (and happiest) version of you. This topic is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, then a marriage and family therapist (focused on systems and communication), a researcher, and in coaching and training thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents these past 16 years. I know too – from working with teams and leaders at organizations both large and small, including startups that are experiencing exponential growth – that many managers and even seasoned leaders fear they simply don’t know enough to do their jobs well, Many suffer from imposter syndrome. In short, confidence is a problem that impedes thousands of people’s success and fulfillment in life and work. Tune into today’s show as I explore the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do specifically to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn’t impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future. 262: Employees Need Empathy From Leaders and Half Aren't Getting It with Raj Sharma
A great leader is able to resiliently and bravely handle core challenges and address key obstacles, all while building a work culture of belonging, safety and trust. And having leaders who demonstrate true empathy has become far more important to employees in today’s post-covid world. To explore what empathy in the workplace is today and how leaders must demonstrate it more fully and authentically, is our inspiring guest Raj Sharma from Ernst & Young. Raj is the Vice Chair at Ernst & Young (EY) Consulting. His 25 years of experience in commercial and financial services has helped him become a global business executive and transformative technology leader, building businesses and executing strategic growth initiatives worldwide. He now leads over 25,000 consultants across the Americas service line. In our conversation, we explore the importance of empathy in leadership by examining EY’s recent study on empathy in business. We learn about the most compelling results from the study and what motivated EY to do this research in the first place, how their findings can help other leaders, and what our guest thinks about empathy overall. Discussing the research findings that over 50% of employees don’t see real empathy at work, Raj explains how empathy can lead to innovation and accountability and how you can improve actionable empathy in your own workplace. We discuss his 5 steps for becoming a great leader and what Raj finds most challenging about managing such a large workforce. Finally, we explore the idea that leaders aren’t just “born” – there is a great deal of work, commitment and self-mastery required in becoming a highly effective leader and manager. To learn more about empathy and its critical role in sustaining a successful organization, don’t miss today’s show. 260: Are You an Anxious Achiever? Turn Your Fears into Your Superpower with Morra Aarons-Mele
Anxiety in the workplace is far more common than many of us are willing to admit. And by refusing to normalize it we are making it even more difficult for people to navigate mental health issues and thrive at work. Our guest today, Morra Aarons-Mele, is no stranger to anxiety in the workplace and is the author of The Anxious Achiever: Turn Your Biggest Fears into Your Leadership Superpower. Morra has done powerful work in raising awareness for mental health in the workplace and has a long list of achievements to her name. In addition to being a best-selling author, global speaker, and consultant, she is also an entrepreneur and communications executive. She is the founder of Women Online, an award-winning social impact agency and she created its database of female influencers, The Mission List, both of which were sold in 2021. Morra is also the host of the award-winning podcast, The Anxious Achiever, where she helps listeners rethink the relationship between their mental health and leadership. In today’s conversation with Morra, we discuss what inspired her to pursue her work as an advocate for workplace mental health and why anxiety in the workplace needs to be normalized and understood differently from the way it is today. She shares the details of her own complex mental health journey and unpacks how our biased systems aren’t actually designed to serve large groups of the population — like minority groups, women, and neurodivergent individuals — and what steps you can take to make work work for you (and how to identify what you need to help you get there). We also explore why self-awareness is essential to good leadership, what it means to make anxiety your ally, and how to assess when anxiety is a response that will be productive or counter-productive for you. To learn more about anxiety at work and how to shift your relationship with your mental health, be sure to tune in to this thought-provoking conversation with Morra Aarons-Mele! 258: How Having a Brain That Is Different Can Be Your Ultimate Gift
Today's guest, Peter Shankman, is a prime example of what happens when you harness the positive aspects of ADHD (and other types of neurodiversity) for your personal benefit. When he was formally diagnosed in his mid-30s, Peter had already founded and sold two companies and realized that the traits that previously labeled him as “troublesome” were actually his greatest assets. Following the sale of his third company, Help a Reporter Out, Peter made it a priority to truly comprehend his "faster brain" and discover its full potential. With his Faster Than Normal podcast and bestselling book of the same name, Peter has become a leading voice on ADHD, inspiring others to embrace their untapped potential. As a futurist at BluShark Digital and Price Benowitz LLP, Peter drives innovation to better serve clients. He continues to empower individuals to surpass society's limitations through his various platforms. In this episode, Peter joins us to discuss neurodiversity, his new children’s book The Boy with the Faster Brain, and his personal journey with ADHD. He opens up about his childhood struggles with being neurodiverse and the connection between ADHD, procrastination, and the subsequent feelings of shame and humiliation. Tuning in today, you’ll hear Peter’s thoughts on society's flawed and outdated norms as well as ways to create a neurodiverse-friendly environment as a company or a manager. 257: Spirituality, Faith and Creating Deeper Meaning In Your Life and Work
Humans are spiritual beings but unfortunately, because we are so influenced by external factors, many of us have become disconnected from our spiritual selves. This results in people making life and career choices that do not align with their core values or purpose, which is causing a great deal of suffering. Today’s inspiring guest, Joseph Holt, is on a mission to help people make work (and life) decisions that allow them to live their lives in a way that is true to their core values, ideals and beliefs. Joe has held an amazingly diverse range of jobs throughout the course of his life, from gym teacher to Jesuit priest to stock broker to corporate attorney, to today where he is living out his calling as a professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business teaching spirituality, ethics, gender equity, and negotiations courses. In this episode, Joe delves into the 7 Recommended Practices for Being Your Spiritual Best Self at Work that he has developed, which include: Set yourself up for spiritual success Determine whether you need to see your current work differently or do different work Be alert for opportunities to be your spiritual best self Choose your work (and life) friends wisely Be as committed to your spiritual well-being as you are to your physical well-being Monitor your spiritual progress (or regress!) with special attention to impact Listen most of all to the quiet inner voice that guides you at your best. Joe shares that “Morality is the public face of your spirituality,” so tune in today to hear how you can strengthen the link between these two vitally important facets of your life and take new, enlivening steps to find long-lasting meaning and fulfillment in your work. Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Joseph (Joe) Holt, former Jesuit priest and current professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. 255: Expanding Emotional Intelligence To Become a Great Leader
Our understanding and definition of what excellent leadership is can vary greatly across continents, countries, and cultures. It is also influenced by individual characteristics such as age, gender, and heritage. And as newer generations enter, and progress, within the workforce, so too do their values and preferences. One of the most notable shifts currently taking place is how we value emotional intelligence (particularly in the workplace) and the growing recognition of its role in cultivating exceptional leadership. Joining us today on the show to help us unpack this nuanced topic is Luis Moreno, an expert in emotional intelligence and human-centered leadership with a special interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Luis has long been an advocate for the important role of emotional intelligence when it comes to leadership. His many years at various Fortune 500 companies exposed him to a range of leadership styles and taught him how to recognize the type of leaders that bring out the best in their employees. This inspired him to establish his platform LuisMorenoTCBPN (The Twin Cities Business Peer Network), where he is training a new generation of leaders to be more effective, more inclusive, and more human-centered in their thinking, behaviors and communication. In our conversation, we discuss the concept of emotional intelligence, how it can help you become a great leader, and how Luis is seeing this play out in organizations around the world. He goes on to explore the notion of empathy, its role in the workplace, and why understanding and respecting someone’s perspective doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with them. Luis also breaks down the responsibility organizations have when it comes to investing in leadership training and how this will help them avoid key problem areas such as a lack of engagement from employees and a high turnover rate. Today’s conversation will leave you with a new appreciation for what it means to be a thoughtful and conscientious leader. Tune in to hear all of Luis’s thought-provoking insights and observations on how the world is re-examining empathy, emotional intelligence, and leadership and why that re-examination is critical for the success of businesses, employees and work cultures today. Key Highlights From This Episode: Introducing Luis Moreno, his career trajectory, and what his work at multiple Fortune 500 hundred companies has taught him about leadership. [01:30] Understanding the complex conversation on being ‘liked’ versus ‘respected’ as a leader and the downsides that accompany the fear of not being liked. [06:27] The image companies project about themselves concerning issues like diversity, equity, and inclusion, versus the reality of what they’re actually implementing, and how this affects employees. [11:48] An overview of emotional intelligence, how it can make you a better leader, and why it results in superior decision-making and improved outcomes in the long term. [16:18] The younger generation’s expectations of leaders and why they require leaders to be transparent about their values. [19:21] Training people to understand the impact of their views and how emotional intelligence helps us connect with people who do not share our perspective. [26:55] How emotional intelligence can help you gain an understanding of why an employee or teammate is underperforming. [35:31] Recognizing how corporate environments often don’t allow minorities and people from marginalized communities to excel. [37:48] Learn where you can find Luis and his training online. [39:32] Luis’s parting message on emotional intelligence: the value of finding appreciation for someone else’s interests and how this can be applied to the workplace.
