Gianna De La Torre is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist for the last 12 years. In 2018 she co-founded Wildling with Jill Munson and Britta Plug. She also became a mom in the same month that Wildling launched. Gianna still offers facial and intuitive acupuncture sessions in Los Angeles, California. Join us as we talk about how gua sha and dry brushing can improve skin health. Have you ever tried gua sha and body brushing? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: How did Gianna get into the world of gua sha, dry brushing, etc.? How to use a gua sha tool on the face and body Why is having slip important when using a gua sha tool? How is dry brushing different to gua sha? Can you do gua sha if you have skin rashes? Is gua sha just for adults? Quotes “You're really gently increasing the flow of chi and blood. And you're guiding that emphatic fluid down towards the lymphatic centers so that your skin is deep puffed, you're relieving facial tension, and relaxing the muscles. You're also smoothing the fascia, which is the connective tissue.” [9:08] “You're never going to use the technique directly over an active skin issue, whether that be acne or whether it's eczema or a rash or anything like that.” [19:20] Links Find Gianna online here and here Get 10% OFF your first Wildling purchase with code HEALTHYSKINSHOW Follow Carrie on Instagram | Instagram | YouTube | TikTokReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

203: Licorice + Topical Steroid Exposure - Should You Be Concerned? (PART 1) w/ Dr. Carrie Jones

There has been a lot of controversy recently about licorice root and using it in people who have had excessive exposure to steroids. It's my hope that my guest today will clear up some misconceptions. This conversation isn't meant to tell you whether or not licorice (and other adaptogenic herbs) are appropriate for you. Instead, we're sharing some science behind things so you can make a more educated decision. My guest today is Dr. Carrie Jones, an internationally recognized speaker, consultant, and educator on the topic of women’s health and hormones. Dr. Carrie graduated from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), School of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon where she also completed her 2-year residency in women’s health, hormones and endocrinology. Dr. Carrie is the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the DUTCH hormone test. Join us as we talk about licorice and topical steroids. Have you been concerned about licorice? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What are corticosteroids? What is cortisone? What are mineralocorticoids? What is licorice root? What is a cortisol pattern supposed to look like? What is the 11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme (11b-HSD)? Why people going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) are wary of using licorice root Is licorice a steroid? Could licorice root be helpful, and what are generally considered safe dosages? Quotes “We have steroid hormones, steroid hormones come from cholesterol. So, that's your cortisol, that's your testosterone, that's your estrogen, estradiol, estrogen, progesterone.” [0:56] “Giving licorice is not the same as giving cortisol. It's not a bio-identical for cortisol.” [16:31] Links Find Dr. Carrie online Adrenal Insufficiency in Corticosteroid Use: A Systemic Review and Meta Analysis Use coupon healthyskin50 for $50 off a DUTCH Complete or DUTCH Plus test Healthy Skin Show ep. 072 Sex Hormone-Skin Rash Connection w/ Dr. Carrie Jones Healthy Skin Show ep. 153: Steroids + Cortisol: How To Pinpoint Adrenal Problems w/ Dr. Carrie Jones Follow Dr. Carrie on Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

Join us as we talk about strange and unexpected triggers for acne. Have you ever experienced an acne flare due to any of the triggers mentioned in today's episode? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: Can supplements trigger acne? Why can some nutrients like vitamin B12 and biotin cause an acne flare? Could your sensitivity to the nutrients improve at all as you improve or rebalance gut, hormone, or liver health? Why can topicals trigger acne? Possible causes of cystic acne What is DHT? Quotes “When we're looking at acne, for the most part, we're questioning first and foremost, what do my hormones look like? What does my gut look like? What does my liver look like? But other than that, if you have random acne out of the blue, it could be really maybe a food, but also maybe a supplement you started.” [1:32] “When we over exfoliate our skin, we over dry our skin. We irritate it and we damage our skin lining or skin barrier. And then what happens is we have irritated, flaky, red, itchy skin that then tries to heal itself and it can erupt in acne.” [11:20] Links Find Lacey online FREE 3-day meal plan Lacey's No BS Guide to Healing Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism Healthy Skin Show ep. 120 Estrogen Dominance Effect On Skin Problems w/ Lacey Dunn Healthy Skin Show ep. 075: Why Biotin Can Mess Up Your Labs (Big Time) Jen's appearance on UpliftFit Nutrition Radio Ep. 102- The SReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

200: Getting Emotional + Mental Support For TSW w/ Jing Rui Yeo

Topical Steroid Withdrawal can make you feel hopeless, because it can be so difficult to control. Plus symptoms that you experience can be incredibly debilitating. I've personally worked with a number of TSW clients who said that the TSW was by far worse than their original skin issue and that some of the symptoms (like hair loss and not being able to sleep) really pushed them to a scary limit mentally. Because I'm not trained to support people in this state, I started to ask colleagues if they knew of anyone who offered counseling to those going through TSW who also had knowledge about what they were going through. My guest today not only has gone through TSW, but offers just this type of support. I'm excited to talk about tips to support your mental and emotional health if you are going through or living with TSW. My guest today is Jing Rui Yeo. Jing is a Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) warrior from Singapore. She has been in TSW for 10 years, and is about 95% healed now. Jing has a Bachelor degree in Social Work and provides counseling for TSW folk. Join us as we talk about the emotional impact of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW). Has TSW impacted your mental health? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: How did Jing end up with Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)? Why is counseling important in the TSW space? How can TSW affect mental and emotional health? Tips for seeking support on your TSW journey Quotes “There are many, many misconceptions of skin conditions, no matter TSW, or eczema and all that. And when people can see it on your body, it's almost like an open invitation for people to comment.” [10:44] “It is not just one type of grief that you are going through, you grieve your appearance firstly, your appearance affects your personality, your character, all your core beliefs. You can't carry yourself in a way that you want to carry yourself. Our appearance actually really makes up a huge part of our personality.” [11:41] Links Find Jing online here (and schedule a call with her if you need support) ITSAN Follow Jing on InstagramReady to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

Getting no answers from conventional medicine, Vivien decided to take her health into her own hands and is now thriving. What are androgens? In women, how do high testosterone levels contribute to acne? How is the thyroid related to acne? Vivien's tip for relieving stress Quotes “When people think hormones, they think estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and they really do influence the skin, but there are other hormones like cortisol and insulin that can also be involved.” [1:28] “I usually see high cortisol being the most problematic because when your body is pumping out cortisol from the adrenal glands, it's also coming out things like adrenaline and some of these androgens as well, like DHEAS and these things can increase sebum production in the skin.” [11:37] Links Find Vivien online here Healthy Skin Show ep. 034: Diet Solutions For Adult Acne w/ Brie Wieselman Healthy Skin Show ep. 067: Best Stress Relief Tips For Skin Rashes (contains some different breathing exercises you could try) Healthy Skin Show ep. 183: Adult Acne: Gut, Topical Products + Nutrient Issues w/ Vivien Allred, NTP, CNHC, BANT The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Dr. Kelly McGonigal Download Vivien's FREE guide: Acne Root Causes Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

And so the inflammation again, that swarms around the hair follicles and the organs, it can cause havoc on the follicle and cause the hair to fall out and so the treatment for them would be to do all that we can to stop the inflammation very quickly.” [5:22] Links Find Dr. Mitchell online Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

196: Psoriasis Diet + Hidden Gut Problems w/ Emma Gould

Did you know that diet and gut problems can have an effect on psoriasis? My guest is here to share more about it! My guest today, Emma Gould, has a degree in Human Biology with Psychology and is a BANT Registered Nutritional Therapist. Emma's own journey with psoriasis started when she was in her teens but really took hold after the birth of her first child when she was 30. After some years of using steroid creams, she decided to change her diet and lifestyle. Five months later, her skin cleared completely! She had learnt the power of Nutrition, retrained as a Nutritionist and now uses her own experiences and knowledge to help others. Join us as we talk about how diet can have an impact on psoriasis. Has your psoriasis improved with dietary changes? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: Emma's personal experience with psoriasis What are some of the common issues that Emma sees on stool tests that could partially drive clients' psoriasis? How to get your digestive system into the "right state of mind" to help it function optimally Phase 2 liver detox Quotes “If bacteria are gram-negative, then they're giving off something called LPS inside your gut, which then crosses over the damaged cell lining of the wall of the intestines, then gets into the bloodstream. And then this is when the body doesn't recognize what these foreign objects are and starts to get over-activated, and it's this overactive immune system which can lead to psoriasis in people that are susceptible to that.” [9:25] “We need the digestive enzymes to break down protein, basically. And there's a lot of studies where it's been shown a link between psoriasis and incomplete protein breakdown, which sometimes starts higher up with the stomach acid, so I also see lots of clients have low stomach acid.” [11:10] Links Find Emma online Follow Emma on Instagram Healing Psoriasis by Dr. John Pagano Is Psoriasis A Gut Problem?
