192: Histamine Intolerance + Skin Rashes, PART 2

As I promised in PART 1 of the Histamine Intolerance series, it’s time to talk about the connection of histamine to estrogen. Histamine and estrogen have a super messed up relationship that’s crucial to investigate in my clinical experience. They can go hand-in-hand with one fueling the other and so on, making your symptoms increasingly worse over time. Despite the deeper focus on estrogen, this episode is for both women AND men because both can end up victims of excess estrogen! And I’m going to share about the two enzymes that play an important role for breaking down histamine. Are you ready for this? Let’s dive in!!! In this episode: Genetic issues associated with DAO + HMNT enzymes Testing for SNPs that impact your histamine enzymes Estrogen-histamine relationship -- YIKES! What part of your menstrual cycle might you be MORE reactive to allergens? Quotes: You have genes that code for two very important enzymes that dictate histamine breakdown -- HMNT and DAO. There is research suggesting that estrogen could increase the number of histamine receptors making you even more sensitive to histamine.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

190: Liver Detox - Skin Rash Connection, Part 3

Liver detox – skin rash questions keep on coming! And I’m happy to answer them because this is one of the most overlooked areas when addressing skin issues. I’ve started to see and hear of some practitioners who have listened to the Healthy Skin Show and are incorporating this into their protocols… But the majority of practitioners — even those who are “functional” or “naturopathic” — still don’t make this a cornerstone to really help their patients avoid unnecessary flairs. Much ground was already covered in PART 1 and PART 2 of this discussion so if you missed those parts, I’d definitely recommend starting with those first. As you might recall, I focus A LOT on the glycine pathway which is a crucial part of Phase 2 liver detox. Today I want to focus on something a bit different, but equally important — other Phase 2 detox pathways AND Phase 3. So let’s get started! In this episode: Discussing the other phase 2 detox pathways (that are important!) How hormone imbalances are connected to phase 3 detox Nutrients + supplements to keep phase 3 detox in check What’s beta-glucuronidase + why is it such a big deal? Gut-Hormone-Liver detox connection Quotes: Phase 2 liver detox pathways deal with various substances from toxins and heavy metals in the environment to medications to hormones and even fat-soluble vitamins. Estrogen dominance can become a real problem when Phase 3 detox gets hijacked by what’s going on in your gut.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

189: How To Deal With Histamine Issues In Kids w/ Dr. Sheila Kilbane

When we think of histamine issues, most of us think of the usual symptoms (e.g. runny nose, congestion, itchy eyes). But did you know that high histamine can also cause behavioral issues and skin rashes, particularly in children? My guest today is Dr. Sheila Kilbane. She is a board-certified pediatrician who trained with Andrew Weil, MD in integrative medicine. She works with families to find the root cause of illness and uses natural and nutritional therapies whenever possible. Her mission is to transform pediatric healthcare globally in order to get 1 million kids off of meds they may not need. Dr. Kilbane sees patients at her clinic in Charlotte, NC and helps people all over the world through her online education courses. She is the author of Amazon bestseller Healthy Kids, Happy Moms: A Step-by-Step Guide to Improving Many Common Childhood Illnesses. Join us as we talk about histamine issues in children, and different ways to safely manage it. Have you dealt with histamine issues in children before? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What is histamine? Different ways histamine issues show up in children Histamine overload triggers in kids Dr. Kilbane's approach to assessing children Considerations for long-term use of Benadryl Thoughts on blood panels for kids Quotes “We always think of histamines as causing runny nose, congestion. It's an inflammatory compound in the body that can be triggered by allergies. Environmental allergies, whether it's pollen or dust mites, that sort of thing, but histamines, they can create a wide variety of symptoms.” [1:18] “We need a wide variety of foods, we get different nutrients from different foods. I see a lot of families who have taken so many foods out, but their kids are still struggling. Those are the cases where we go, 'Okay, could this be an issue of excess histamine, and let's figure out other triggers'.” [9:40] Links Find Dr. Kilbane online Dr. Kilbane's online course FREE download: 10 Tips to Use Food as Your Pharmacy Get Dr. Kilbane's 5 Foundational Supplements FREE here Follow Dr. Kilbane on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

188: Histamine Intolerance + Skin Rashes (PART 1)

If you’re taking lots of antihistamines and still struggling with what you think is histamine intolerance, you need to hear this! Histamine intolerance is a huge problem — something I see in my clinical practice in about 50% of my clients. It’s tricky (and frustrating) because they’re often taking multiple antihistamines (though getting minimal results), having trouble sleeping, and feel like their doctors don’t fully know why they’re either so reactive to everything or their allergy panels come back “completely normal”. Whether you’re dealing with eczema, rosacea, chronic hives and psoriasis (though this pattern is much less common in psoriasis), your case should be evaluated for what I describe as Histamine Overload. Ultimately, identifying this pattern is crucial to knowing how what else to consider and potentially address that could be making you miserable. While you need histamine (it’s an important neurotransmitter), too much in your body can be really problematic! It’s my hope that this first part of the Histamine Intolerance + Skin Rashes series will help you to unravel this complex problem by connecting dots for you that you might not be familiar with! In this episode: What is Histamine Overload + your Histamine Cup? Skin issues that can be connected to excess histamine How to tell if you have Histamine Overload Your gut’s hidden role in driving histamine higher Histamine breakdown in the gut (and medications that can impair it) Histamine supportive supplements Quotes: Some bugs cause mast cells to dump histamine (thus increasing the level) while other bugs can actually produce histamine. If you have histamine overload, antihistamines may be a necessary bandaid while you work on underlying issues.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/

187: Penetrating Enhancers, Phthalates + Fragrances... Oh My! w/ Lara Adler, CHHC

Did you know there are toxins in our environment that can be absorbed through the skin, and also play a role in the development of skin conditions? We've got to talk about this because these chemicals are a really big deal when it comes to hidden toxins hijacking your health! My guest today is Lara Adler, an Environmental Toxins Expert & Educator, and a Certified Health Coach who teaches nutritionists, nurses, and other holistic health practitioners how to eliminate the #1 thing holding their clients back from the results they are seeking – the unaddressed link between chemicals and chronic health problems. She trains practitioners to become experts in everyday toxic exposures so they can improve client outcomes without spending hundreds of hours researching on their own. Combining environmental health education and business consulting, she’s helped thousands of health professionals in over 25 countries around the world elevate their skillset, improve client outcomes, and become sought out leaders in the growing environmental health and detoxification field. Join us as we discuss phthalates, fragrance, and other chemicals that can affect the health of our skin. Have you tried reducing your skin's exposure to toxins? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: Absorbability of various chemicals through the skin What are phthalates? Should you be concerned about fragrances in products? What are Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs)? How to reduce your skin's toxic exposure Quotes “The skin is really important. It serves as this barrier to keep a lot of things out. So obviously, not everything that we come in contact you is going to be absorbed, but a lot of things are absorbed and the things that are, are chemicals or substances that have a very small molecular size.” [3:22] “Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals. They mimic hormones in the human body and can interfere with normal hormone signaling that can lead to everything from mood and energy issues to increase rates of breast cancer or birth defects or any other hormonally modulating effect, which is most things in the body.” [8:40] Links Find Lara online Want to try out Branch Basics cleaning products? 186: Liver Detox - Skin Rash Connection (PART 2)

As promised, I’ve put together a conglomeration of listener questions about the liver detox-skin rash connection. I know this topic is complicated and much of what I say flies in the face of how you’ve been conditioned to think about detoxing. But it’s an important one because there is just so much confusion out there! I’m hoping this helps clarify for you my first podcast in this series — PART 1 — where I detailed the three phases of liver detox and WHY they’re so important for chronic skin rashes. Plus, I’ve shared one of my favorite graphics below that helps you understand the priority of organ systems and how I address them in my practice. I call it the “Priority Pyramid” will help you see why liver detox support isn’t something to just do briefly and then move on. It’s a big deal! And yes, because I have even more to say on this topic, there will be a part 3 so stay tuned! In this episode: How to know if you actually need to do a liver detox Is there a way to measure liver detox? My recommendation on length of time to support liver detox When to take your liver supportive supplements Thoughts on Castor oil packs for Phase 2 detox Why I don’t recommend collagen for liver detox (even though it contains glycine) “Keto rash” + liver detox Best protocol for liver detox support Quotes: Phase 2 liver detox pathways need nourishment, not detox supplements to “clean” or flush your liver. The only solution if you develop an itchy rash after going on a keto diet is to increase your carbs + possibly leave ketosis.Ready to figure out your skin’s root causes so you can finally fix your skin + break free from meds to manage your skin?My virtual clinic works with adults worldwide struggling with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, urticaria, hives, dandruff, perioral dermatitis + more.Trusted by over 1000 clients, we get results WITHOUT restrictive elimination diets.Schedule an assessment call at https://skinrepaircall.com/
