Treatment Implications using the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis (PART 7)
How can the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis be applied to eating disorder treatment? In the past 6 episodes, you learned all about this (r)evolutionary perspective and why Anorexia is a plausible evolutionary adaptation to flee famine. In this episode, I explain how you can use the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis to support full recovery from Anorexia.

Anorexia & Denial of Illness EXPLAINED (Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis PART 6)
Why do people with Anorexia fail to perceive the severity of their illness? According to the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis, this occurrence would have facilitated survival in times of famine. The AFFH proposes Anorexia to be the result of three core adaptations: restriction, hyperactivity, and denial of starvation. In part 4 and 5 of this 7-part series, we unpacked restriction and hyperactivity. In this 6th part, we're going to be looking specifically at denial of illness, including delusional body image. You'll learn:
How delusional body image can be seen as an adaptive mechanism
The role of interoception in Anorexia
The role of interoception in Autism
How neuroendocrine mechanisms contribute to denial of illness
Opioid levels in Anorexic individuals
How historical accounts of Anorexia support the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis

Anorexia & Hyperactivity EXPLAINED (Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis PART 5)
Why do people with Anorexia feel driven to exercise even at a dangerously low weight? Although it appears paradoxical, this behavior is actually very logical when looked at through the lens of the Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis. The AFFH proposes Anorexia to be the result of three core adaptations: restriction, hyperactivity, and denial of starvation. In part 4 of this 7-part series, we unpacked restriction. In this 5th part, we're going to be looking specifically at hyperactivity! You'll learn:
Why hyperactivity would have facilitated survival in times of famine
How the hyperactivity component of Anorexia can be understood using animal models
Why weight loss leads to increased hyperactivity
Hormones involved in exercise addiction
How to break the hyperactivity cycle

Anorexia & Food Restriction EXPLAINED (Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis PART 4)
Welcome to part 4 of my Adapted to Flee Famine Hypothesis series! The AFFH proposes that Anorexia symptoms are the result of three core adaptations that would have facilitated survival in times of famine. These three adaptations are: restriction, hyperactivity, and denial of starvation. In this episode, we’re going to be focusing on restriction! You'll learn:
How animal models can be used to understand anorexia
What "holy anorexia" is and how it provides insight to current misrepresentations of the illness
Consistent traits across humans and mammals that display symptoms of anorexia
Neuroendocrine abnormalities in anorexia
Why people with anorexia feel full easily
The importance of honoring mental hunger
Why people with anorexia often have lower set point weights
Genetic mutations in anorexia patients
The role of stress and reward systems in anorexia
Why people with anorexia are obsessed with food despite their lack of physical hunger cues
