Biomechanics, Alignment and Movement w/ Katy Bowman

This week we have a very special guest on the show, someone who has been a major influence on my perspective and my approach to movement personally and has really inspired a lot of the philosophy and practices that we promote here at TFC. Katy Bowman is a Biomechanist and is the bestselling author of 9 books, including Move Your DNA, Whole-Body Barefoot, Grow Wild,  and her latest book Rethink Your Position which is actually due to launch tomorrow, Thursday 11th May. Katy has been a leading voice in the movement movement for over a decade and has pioneered the concept of Nutritious Movement, which is the name of her education company and is just frankly an amazing analogy to help us frame how movement affects all aspects of our health on a deep level. In fact one of our first episodes on this podcast was actually a whole episode dedicated to exploring the concept of movement nutrition and obviously draws on Katy’s work heavily, and so that podcast would pair very well with this one - so if you’re keen to check that out first or straight after, it is all the way down in Season 1 Episode 3. But throughout this episode, we discuss the broader concept of biomechanics, we delve into the difference between posture and alignment and explore how the way we move can influence how we feel and contribute to our experience of pain and injury. We also delve into some key topics from Katy’s new book to help you build more awareness around your own alignment, movement and mindset. There’s obviously a huge amount that we didn’t get to cover, as the book goes into a really impressive amount of detail while still being really accessible to read and having read it back to front myself I can very honestly highly recommend it. How Natural Footwear Helped Me w/ Anya Jensen

Anya Jensen is the human behind a footwear review blog called Anyas reviews and also an online shoe store that sells natural footwear. As someone who started wearing orthotics at 9 years old and was debilitated by foot pain, Anya went down a path of personal exploration to figure out how to get out of pain once and for all. Now through her work, she shares her experience to help others resolve their foot problems through her blog and natural footwear store which you can checkout on Anya's website here. Foot & Ankle Physiotherapy w/ Michelle Bergeron

Michelle Bergeron is a Melbourne based physiotherapist with a special focus on foot and ankle rehabilitation. Throughout the episode, we explore Michelle’s journey with physiotherapy including her experience working with the Australian Ballet, in the AFL and Cirque du Soleil. We also discuss her general approach to foot and ankle conditions, some common errors that she sees and how she uses footwear as a tool throughout that process and we also talk through some key tips for successfully navigating the rehab journey. Story From The Sole w/ Amy Downes

This week we’re back with another Story From The Sole and this one is pretty special. Amy Downes is a relatively new member of our community and has been on a pretty remarkable journey. The mother of two had been a nurse for 18 years before issues with her own health made her question her career and the system as a whole. Amy had also struggled with plantar fasciitis for years. She’d spent thousands of dollars on traditional approaches like orthotics and supportive footwear but had never been able to shake the pain and only left her feeling more alone and isolated. It wasn’t until she started training barefoot and found her TFC tribe that she’s truely been able to take control of her foot health. Amy’s journey since then has been nothing short of inspiring. She says over the past few months she has rediscovered how to play and her joy for movement and play, learnt how to listen to her body again and made life-changing connections with other humans online and in-person who are on the same journey. Amy is the definition of a TFC Explorer. Someone who is willing to ask questions and search for answers in her own pursuit of foot freedom and her story is one I think we could all learn a lot from. Barefoot Parkour w/ Mathieu Jang

This week I have a conversation with Mathieu Jang who goes by parkour.jang on Instagram. Mathieu is a high level parkour athlete and shares his story about how he found parkour and why he does it barefoot. We talked about risk perception and his process of approaching a challenge in parkour by breaking it down into individual parts and working through each component individually before piecing it all together in a final movement sequence. We finish off by talking about what parkour is to him and where beginners can start if they want to begin their own journey into parkour regardless of age or ability. Motum Movement w/ Tahlia Wall

This week I chat with Tahlia Wall from Physio Smart in Adelaide which was the location for our seminar when we were down there last in 2021. While we were down there I had a great chat with Matt who is the owner of Physio Smart, which would pair really well with this episode, so if you’re keen to listen to that one as well, it’s called 'A Smart Approach to Rehab' and it’s in season 1 of the podcast. When we were down in Adelaide, Matt and Tahlia were at the very start of their journey with their movement training community, called Motum which has gone through a lot of growth and evolution since. In this episode I was super stoked to get to talk through that in detail with Tahlia along with her own journey with physiotherapy and movement, some of the main problems with the traditional approach to healthcare and Physio and the immense value of connection and community for improving outcomes in rehab and overall health.
