Ep 48 – MI in schools

MI in schools Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Andrew Williams, NPQH to the podcast for a fascinating and timely discussion on MI in schools. Andy has taught for 28 years, the last 10 years as Deputy Headteacher at a large secondary school in South Wales. He was the winner of the Pearson’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2000. His work on building a frame for maintaining and repairing relationships has led him to be seconded to work with Chief Constable at Gwent Police Force,  Andy has served alongside the Chief Executive Officer in three Local Authorities and most recently with a Championship Football Club. MI in Diabetes Care  Glenn and Sebastian were happy to have Judith Carpenter on the podcast. To discuss MI in diabetes care. Judith has been an MI trainer for over 20 years and a registered dietitian for over 30; Currently working as a Specialist Diabetes Dietitian alongside working as an MI trainer, she integrates MI into her dietetic consultations. Judith became involved in MI in order to improve clinical care with her patients.  Judith started her own training consultancy in 2008 to concentrate on delivering motivational interviewing training and has delivered 100’s of trainings over the past decades to a variety of professionals working in healthcare, social care and other professional groups. Reducing Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Kristin Dempsey and Ali Hall to the podcast to discuss reducing burnout and compassion fatigue Kristin Dempsey, EdD is a psychotherapist, counselor educator, and Motivational Interviewing Trainer working and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kristin has worked in community health settings for over 25 years and specializes in addiction, dual diagnosis, and trauma treatment. She also helps organizations implement motivational interviewing and other evidence based practices and assess organizational responsiveness to employee wellness and trauma informed care. Ali Hall is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), a MINT Certified Trainer, and an independent consultant and trainer. Ali currently serves on the MINT Board of Directors, focusing on professional skill development for MI practitioners and trainers. Ali served as a Lead Trainer for the International MINT Training for New Trainers (TNT) in Warsaw (2019), New Orleans (2018) and Berlin (2015). Ali facilitates Motivational Interviewing (MI) workshops for behavioral health providers, health care providers, wraparound providers, senior service providers, criminal justice professionals. psychologists, and psychiatrists, and provides training for trainers in evidence-based practices. Ali is the co-developer of the Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment (MICA), a coding and coaching tool for MI skill improvement. Ep 45 – Effective Psychotherapists with Bill Miller & Terri Moyers

Effective Psychotherapists with Bill Miller & Terri Moyers Glenn and Sebastian were honored to have Drs. William R. Miller and Theresa B. Moyers, authors of “Effective Psychotherapists”, on Talking to Change. Dr. Miller is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico where he served as Director of Clinical Training for the doctoral program in clinical psychology and as a Founder and Co-Director of the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions (CASAA).  Miller’s publications include over 60 books and 400 articles and chapters.  Fundamentally interested in the psychology of change, he has focused in particular on the development, testing, and dissemination of behavioral treatments for addictions.  He introduced the method of motivational interviewing (MI) in 1983 and with Dr. Stephen Rollnick has authored three editions of the primary textbook on MI.  With 45 years of experience in addiction research and treatment, he has served as principal investigator for numerous research grants and contracts, founded a private practice group, directed a large public treatment program, and served as a consultant to many organizations including the United States Senate, the World Health Organization, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Institutes of Health.  In recognition of his research contributions, Dr. Miller is a recipient of the international Jellinek Memorial Award, two career achievement awards from the American Psychological Association, and an Innovators in Combating Substance Abuse award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  He maintains an active interest in the interface of spirituality and psychology.  His books have been translated into 28 languages, and the Institute for Scientific Information has listed him as one of the world’s most cited scientists.   Dr. Moyers is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New Mexico where she specializes in the treatment of addictive behaviors. Her research program focuses on teaching clinicians to use evidence-based treatments including motivational interviewing in the addictions field as well as identifying active ingredients in motivational interviewing. Dr. Moyers has published more than 30 peer-reviewed publications related to motivational interviewing and has presented it at conferences and workshops in 42 States and 16 countries. Dr. Moyers also trains and competes with her Border Collie in dog agility. Opiate In part two of a pair of episodes on MI for opiate and stimulant use disorders, Glenn and Sebastian happily welcomed Paul Delaney to the podcast. Paul is a clinical supervisor, therapist, adult educationalist and trainer, based in Dublin, Ireland. His background is in the addictions field originally working as an addiction counsellor helping to develop Employee Assistance Programmes. He received his initial training in Motivational Interviewing in 1992 in the UK and after further training he became a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) after attending the first MINT Forum in Malta in 1997. Paul says he was privileged to have been chosen to chair the local host committee for the 20th anniversary meeting of MINT, held in Dublin, Ireland in October 2017. Patrick studied sexology to begin his professional life in the support of people living in a reality of sex work. He worked for several years in public health in the Quebec health network. Ep 40 – MI for youth with HIV

Episode 40 – MI for youth with HIV Glenn and Sebastian were thrilled to welcome good friend Salome Nicole Cockern, PhD (Nikki) to the podcast. Nikki is a Paediatric Psychologist and Assistant Professor at Wayne State University, with extensive experience implementing health behavior change interventions for adolescents and young adults.  She is the psychologist and lifeline in the adolescent HIV clinic in Detroit, MI, and has provided clinical supervision for several research projects including Healthy Choices targeting youth living with HIV, We Test, and the  Young Men’s Health Project targeting risk behaviors and PrEP (HIV prevention medication) initiation in young men who have sex with men.  She has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2004 and uses MI in clinical practice with youth in the areas of adherence, substance use, mental illness, partner violence, coping and risk reduction.
