The Modern Phoenix
The Modern Phoenix (formerly “It’s All Me”)
In a culture that values logic, urgency, perfection, and sameness, The Modern Phoenix walks a different path: one that honors her unique mind, body and soul.
Between information overload, the demands of modern life, and lifetimes of conditioning and “shoulds”, it can feel hard for a woman to know and listen to her own wants and needs. We’re so busy caring and doing and anticipating and managing that we forget ourselves. We hope there’s a better, more balanced, life-giving and feminine way to be a modern woman—to have regulated nervous systems, intuitive solutions to complex problems, and the distinct trust in ourselves and our choices, despite life’s curveballs, but we’re not sure where to start.
That’s where I come in. I’m Gervase Kolmos, Inner Transformation Coach and phoenix-in-evolution. I help women learn to trust themselves and be guided by their own inner authority to live with pleasure, authenticity and embodied wisdom.
This podcast is my mission and my mantra: you are light and dark, thinking and feeling, perfect and a work-in-progress. Together, we’ll unlock your intuition, tap into the wisdom and resources of your body, and navigate this confusing, demanding, gorgeous life.
So let’s burn down the stories, conditioning and beliefs that don’t serve us, shall we?

Healing from unconscious cycles of judgment in all relationships
In this powerful conversation with Gervase’s colleague, friend and mentor, Jolenny Piedra, Jolenny shares her personal story of how a traumatic injury at a young age gifted her the perspective she and G both feel could change the world: From “Why is this happening to me?” to “What is this here to teach me?” They also dive deep into how to strengthen our human capacity for being in community with strangers or loved ones who trigger us and challenge us. Expect endless mindset shifts for working with reality and not against it, in all areas of life, particularly relationships. And a crash course on how to not only learn from cycles of judgment with loved ones, but to actually see them as opportunities for healing. Jolenny is a Trauma-Informed Spiritual Life Coach. Over the past 13 years, she has worked with thousands of clients, holding a space of deep safety, reverence and acceptance as they mapped their own paths from emotional and spiritual struggle back to the light of truth and of love. The practice and heart centered approach of mindfulness, deep soul inquiry, and conscious empowerment has been and continues to be a cornerstone of her coaching practice. Meeting Your Moment of Self-Trust
This week, Gervase is giving you a heart to heart—with examples from her personal life, her marriage and her clients—on why you not only can trust yourself, but it’s actually critical that you do so. So many modern women are bogged down under their conditioning about what they should or shouldn’t do, and this causes a big problem when they feel a big life change stirring inside them. We intuitively know to do something that will shake things up, but we don’t follow through due to the abnormality or inconvenience of it, or because we listen to our heads over our hearts. Every time we do this, I call it abandoning ourselves, and every time we abandon ourselves, we strengthen that muscle of DISTRUST that perpetuates more suffering and self-doubt. Listen in for how to reverse engineer this cycle to choose yourself, to start trusting yourself and watching the miracles and magic that happen in every area of your life on the other side of that. Moms Demand Action for Gun Reform with Jackie Shelley
In this robust conversation, Jackie shares several pieces of good news where this fight is concerned and gives us not only hope, but also next steps. It’s a must-listen, especially for those of us who are looking to understand exactly how this affects us all, but especially people of color. This was not clearly stated in this conversation, but deserved to be: “Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. They experience 10 times the gun homicides, 18 times the gun assault injuries, and nearly 3 times the fatal shootings by police of white Americans.” (from the Everytown website) More about Jackie Shelley: Jackie Shelley is the SC state leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America--the leading force for gun violence prevention, with chapters in all 50 states and a powerful grassroots network that works at the local, state, and federal level to create change. Upon graduating Clemson University, Jackie taught high school English and served as yearbook adviser in the public school system. After deciding to start a family, she became a stay-at-home mom and weekly volunteer in her kids' classrooms. Devastated by the mass shooting of first graders at Sandy Hook elementary, Jackie started the Charleston, SC group of Moms Demand Action and has served in a leadership capacity ever since. She lives in the Charleston area with her husband, two sons, and a space-invading pug named Zelda. More about Moms Demand Action: Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We also work in our own communities and with business leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe. Calling in the coaching industry with Emily Cassel
G sits down with her current business coach and one of her oldest entrepreneur friends, Emily Cassel, for a juicy convo unpacking some “trends” they’ve been noticing in the coaching industry. From “word salads” to “downloads” and “codes in the quantum,” they are doing their damndest to discern, in real time, how to be regularly gut-checking whether the words we use and the way we market big concepts like femininity and intuition as coaches is ethical, in integrity and in service to a generation of women listening. In this episode, we talk about: How to embody what your values are in the coaching world as well as being a woman and a mother, to stay in integrity. The power of investing in yourself to calibrate quicker and stay in your zone of genius. Emily Cassel is a Charleston, SC-based business strategist and leadership coach for women entrepreneurs and the founder of WMNûp, a global network and community of women leaders and entrepreneurs who are disrupting industries, innovating change, and doing things differently. Shifting the working mother narrative with Amri Kibbler of HeyMama
Gervase put back on her Champagne Society moderator hat in this conversation with new mom friend and NYC-based entrepreneur, Amri Kibler. Amri is the CEO of HeyMama and has been building a powerful community for mothers while also raising (wild) small humans, so we talk everything from the ride of motherhood and the four steps we believe mothers can collectively take to empower and improve the current state of the modern mother’s mental load and workplace bias. In this episode, we talk about: Our parallel experiences as mama community builders, ambitious women creating our own communities and real AF moms who have screamed at our kids right before putting them on the bus The internal narratives mothers are carrying around right now (hint: self-doubt is a big one) The current work of modern mothers to understand their OWN value and then share that perspective at home and work The four steps we believe mothers can collectively take to empower and improve the current state of the modern mother’s mental load and workplace bias. Amri Kibbler is a mom of two. After launching HeyMama on a shoe string budget in 2014, she led the brand's community from a small instagram account to one of the world's largest working moms communities. Prior to founding HeyMama, she spent more than 10 years as an editor and stylist creating content focused on building women's confidence and self worth for major publications, including Glamour Magazine and Cosmopolitan. I AM the answer {a response to the Uvalde mass shooting}
On this solo episode, G is responding to the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas (and the several in the week since), with a perspective (we often overlook) she believes can set a new standard for changing the world and your life. The It’s All Me framework reminds us that YOU are the solution. Your awakening and connection to Self is THE answer to strong and sustainable change. Any change you wish to create in the world must first start inside you . . . then in your home, then in your immediate circles. The systems that profit from our powerlessness, overwhelm and disconnection do not want us to pause. So we set a new standard again . . . and we PAUSE. Mastering the cycles of learning, growing and arriving with Katie Ashley
I sat down with my wise and thoughtful friend Katie Ashley, another Charleston, SC local, to hear her takeaways from the seasons and cycles of the past few years as I know she is someone who embodies the #ItsAllMeMindset beautifully. Katie brings her lived wisdom to this conversation and shares it through her unique lens of her therapeutic yoga training and Chinese medicine, plus her personal experience with surfing. In this episode, we talk about: The cycles (or cyclones) of being a woman, mother or entrepreneur How Katie keeps herself at the center of her life’s experiences. #itsallmemindset Earth lessons, samskaras and giving ourselves grace to be in the process How we were both reluctant nature lovers🙈, even though it connected us to the inherent magic in the cyclical nature of seasons, tides, and our human experience. How Katie faced a deathly fear of the ocean to cultivate self-trust and lean into her true desire to be a surfer The incredible metaphor that surfing provides for a modern woman mastering her balance of the masculine and feminine. More about Katie: Katie Ashley offers individualized movement therapy in her downtown studio space in Charleston, SC. These sessions include a blend of functional movement, equipment based Pilates, Katonah Yoga, Buddhist meditation philosophies and practices, hands on Thai yoga therapy techniques, and a good dose of Traditional Chinese Medicine themes and classical yoga philosophies. She is the author of the book, Living Life On Purpose, and is the resident yoga teacher at the Feminist Magic Market that occurs in the cozy backyard of Itinerate Literate Books in North Charleston. She teaches weekly yoga classes at Yoloha Yoga Factory on James Island and offers workshops wherever she’s invited. She is also the Wellness Coach at Hammocks on the Edisto, a small residential treatment center for women in recovery from trauma and alcohol and substance abuse and has long been an advocate for recovery of all kinds.
