213 The Woman They Could Not Silence with Kate Moore
Every so often we read a book that touches us so deeply, so profoundly, that we find ourselves telling everyone we know that they MUST read this book. This is exactly what happened when I read The Woman They Could Not Silence, a mesmerizing story of a woman in the 1800's whose husband had her unjustly committed to a mental institution, her heartbreaking struggles, and her amazing triumphs. This book made me outraged and inspired and fired up, and I am thrilled to have the author, Kate Moore, on the podcast. In today's episode, Kate and I discuss: The attempts to silence women throughout history The story of Elizabeth Packard, whose husband committed her to an insane asylum simply because she disagreed with him How Packard refused to be silenced, and what she did with her voice to change the world Elizabeth Packard's contributions to women's rights and the rights of the mentally ill The law of coverture that dates back about a thousand years and whose impact reached even into the twentieth century – you will not believe this! Some of the meticulous research that Kate conducted, and her fascinating primary sources How women's voices are still being silenced today About Kate Moore: Kate Moore is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Radium Girls, which won the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for Best History, was voted U.S. librarians' favourite nonfiction book of 2017, and was named a Notable Nonfiction Book of 2018 by the American Library Association. 212 Teaching Girls About Their Bodies with Lisa Klein
When I was a little girl, I, like most young girls, was sorely lacking a clear understanding of my own body, how it worked, what changes I could expect it to undergo, and so much more. I learned some things about puberty in school, from friends, from my older sister… but I wish I had had a really clear guide that laid it all out. Fast forward to 2022, and I learn that a dear friend of mine from my childhood wrote a book about puberty for pre-teen and teen girls, exactly what I needed, and her book was banned in Florida! Dr. Lisa Klein joins us to discuss: Starting the conversation about puberty with your children when they are young, piece by piece like building blocks. You shouldn't have "the talk" once and be done with it. Ways to talk with your child about puberty and sex without making it uncomfortable for you or them. Answers to some questions your girls might ask that you might not be prepared for. Navigating social media and porn with your child. Teaching puberty to both pre-teens, teens and parents to help create an open conversation between parents and kids so they will feel comfortable asking questions about their body as they get older. Finding out that her book was banned in some parts of Florida, and having her op-ed published in one of the biggest media outlets in the world. About Lisa Klein: Dr. Lisa Klein is a board certified Pediatrician and practices outpatient pediatrics at Child Health Associates, PC in Michigan. Dr. Klein is passionate about all aspects of children's health, but has a special interest in adolescent medicine. 211 The End of PurposeGirl... Welcome to The Institute of WOMAN
Sister, big changes are coming… for me. For you. For US. After 12 years as PurposeGirl, the name no longer fits. I'm not a "Girl" – I'm WOMAN. WE are WOMAN. So, I'm excited to share that that PurposeGirl is dissolving – and we will be reborn as The Institute of WOMAN. This is about our Reclamation. Our Becoming. Our Wholeness. Our FREEDOM. And in today's episode I take you on the very personal journey of this transformation so you understand what lies ahead for me and for all of us. I share: What this means for The PurposeGirl Podcast, our community and you (It's not going away – just growing up!) Why PurposeGirl no longer fits and what a grown man calling professional women "Girls" had to do with it. How hanging onto little people pleaser little girl tendencies kept me small When something inside no longer first, you're ready for REBIRTH What REBIRTH means and how to have one for your own evolution My own growth and evolution as a WOMAN and what that means for you Why Purpose is just one piece… and what the other pieces of our wholeness are A traumatic experience I had earlier this year around me showing up as my fullest, boldest self and being rejected and attacked for it Why it's WOMAN and not "women" – the degradation of WOMAN over time The inspiration for The Institute of WOMAN and the meaning behind the name My shift from Carin to Carina You can have a REBIRTH too. We all must in order to have the life and be the WOMAN we were born to be. So I'm gifting everyone in my community the 3 Day Experience, REBIRTH, for free, from September 20 – 22, 2022.
