The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 060: Happiness Is a Choice
Shit happens to everyone. We're not getting through life without facing our share of challenges, setbacks, disappointments, and tragedies. However, it's important to understand that our happiness is actually our choice. This isn't just a pretty platitude -- it's a research-backed fact –- and in today's episode I share with you some of the science from the field of positive psychology that supports this. I go into an explanation of the basic structure of the brain and what evolutionary biology has to teach us about why it's so easy to go to the negative instead of the positive, I share current research, and I offer concrete strategies for what we can do to choose happiness every day. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 059: Bias in the Workplace
Today I'm joined by Andie Kramer, a partner in the international law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP. Andie has mentored thousands of women and written hundreds of articles and blog posts on gender biases, and is co-author of the ABA guide, "What You Need to Know About Negotiating Compensation." According to Andie, even the most well-intentioned workplace is biased, because the leadership is almost always men, and usually white men, and they (like most people) have affinity bias, which is an affinity for people who look and act like them and come from the same background. Add to that gender bias and you get an environment in which women are put into a very difficult position. Andie also addresses the interesting dynamic of women having gender-biased expectations of other women -- this isn't only bias on the part of men – and why this is too often a reality. Andie discusses the fact that when men receive feedback at work it tends to be about things they can improve, but a majority of the feedback that women receive at work is about their personality, as if there's something wrong with her. Andie talks about some of the things that women can do, that men can do, and that organizations can do to combat bias in the workplace. To learn more about Andie Kramer, go to https://andieandal.com. You can get Andie's first book, Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work (https://amzn.to/2VqJ3DJ), and pre-order her second book, It's Not You, It's the Workplace: Women's Conflict at Work and the Bias that Built It (https://amzn.to/2Dygc6i), at Amazon. Also, Andie recommended the book Fly Girls, which you can get at Amazon (https://amzn.to/2GFTYRN) as well. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 058: Things We Don't Talk About
Today's episode is very explicit. There is extremely open talk about a number of things that we as women usually feel uncomfortable discussing, even with our closest friends. I talk about the fertility journey that my husband and I are on. I talk about masturbation. I talk about sex. I talk about orgasm. My point in discussing these things so openly is to try to remove the stigma around some of these issues. If we talked more about fertility struggles, we could give and receive support more easily. If we talked more about our difficulties with orgasm or with sex we might come to realize that our concerns about ourselves are actually very common, and we might take comfort in connecting with others around it, as well as learn strategies for living a happier and healthier life. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 057: Rewiring Our Desires
We all have stressful days, and we all handles stress in our own ways. Some exercise, some have a few drinks, some binge watch a favorite (or a stupid) show, and some go for the Ben and Jerry's. It's important for us to think about our own coping mechanisms and determine whether or not we're just numbing out and avoiding dealing with our stressors head on, because if we're just numbing out, the issues that are causing us the stress in the first place are still going to be there when we've finished the pint of ice cream or the bottle of wine, but now we're going to feel bad about the extra calories or the hangover as well. My guest, Anita Parr, has had her own personal experiences with numbing out and now coaches others to manage their own desires for things that they use in harmful ways (alcohol, food, and more). She discusses her unique approach and her program, Rewire Your Desire, which is a holistic approach incorporating yoga, Ayurveda, nutrition, coaching, and more. You can learn more about Anita Parr and Rewire Your Desire at www.rewireyourdesire.org and on Facebook at Rewire Your Desire, and you can follow her on Instagram @anitaparryoga. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 055: Undermining Women's Success
Wouldn't it be wonderful if, when we experienced success and were recognized for our achievements, others celebrated with us? Sometimes that's the case, but unfortunately, when someone experiences success, others often resent, attack, or ostracize them. This is known as the Tall Poppy Syndrome, and it can be so demoralizing. My guest today, Rumeet Billan, is an expert in this and recently conducted research on Tall Poppy Syndrome in Canada, and she shares her findings and their implications for all of us. In studying over 1500 women Rumeet found that 87% of study participants reported that their success was undermined by others at work, and the number one result was a negative impact on their self-esteem and self-confidence. They also ended up downplaying their achievements and engaging in more negative self-talk. Most women felt that they were brought down by both men and women, but in different ways. The men who undermined their successes tended to be in CEO roles and the women who brought them down tended to bee peers and colleagues. Rumeet studied women but points out that men are also victims of tall poppy syndrome. She discusses some of the effects of this on employees as well as what it means for the companies themselves, and she has advice for companies on how to manage this. You can learn more about Rumeet, and download a white paper on Tall Poppy Syndrome, at her website (https://rumeetbillan.com), and there's a website for her book as well (https://www.whodoiwanttobecome.com). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 054: How to Overcome Challenges
We all face challenges in our lives, and how we react to these challenges has a huge impact on our well being. Some have said that positive psychology at its core is all about struggling well, and in today's episode I'm talking about different types of traumas that we face and how we can struggle well with them, how we can overcome our challenges. I dive deeply into the concept of post-traumatic growth (PTG), and break down the five aspects of PTG. Providing examples for each, I walk through all five aspects and show new ways of relating to one's traumas and turning your pain into purpose. I offer tools that you can use right now to deal with traumas, both small and large. In this episode I mention Ritual Vitamins, which has been a sponsor of our show. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 053: Creating Resilient Children
Rates of anxiety among adolescents have been steadily growing in recent years. In the United States, 1 in 3 kids will be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder by the age of 18, and the global statistics are similar. My special guest, Renee Jain, brings together technology and child psychology as she works with children and parents to build the emotional intelligence of children, helping build their resilience, empathy, kindness, and critical thinking, so important in the face of the struggles that our children today are experiencing. There are plenty of contributing factors, from social media to our obsession with perfection to overscheduling our children to putting intense pressure on them to succeed and get into the top schools, and more. But according to Renee, all of this is leading to the suppression of and the disconnection from the inner voice of our children, which is the real root of the issue here. Only about 20% of kids who struggle with anxiety will get access to a mental health professional, but there are effective tools that these kids could learn to help them handle their anxiety. Realizing this, Renee left her tech/finance background and switched careers to support children and their mental health. She started a company that creates animated cartoons and programs, tools that are used by therapists, parents, and schools, to teach kids important life skills to improve their wellbeing. One of the principles that GoZen teaches is that we shouldn't be trying to be stress-free. Instead, we should learn to understand our stress and use it to our advantage. In fact, all emotions are OK, and they can also be advantageous and positive catalysts for change. Through GoZen, Renee teaches children how to understand and manage their emotions, and how to use them to their benefit. Renee walks us through a number of steps that are part of the GoZen process, including learning to stress better and reacquainting oneself with one's emotions and identifying where one feels emotions in one's body. The GoZen program can be used reactively with children who are already struggling and who are working with a therapist, but many schools also use it universally, with all students, in a proactive way, arming them with life skills that everyone really needs. If you'd like to learn more about Renee and GoZen follow her on Facebook (https://facebook.com/gozenonline/) and Twitter (@gozentweets), and check out her website (https://gozen.com). Renee has led a number of summits, including the Happy Child Summit, in which I participated. The Happy Child Summit is a free online event April 8-11, 2019. This event brings together 20 experts speaking on everything from motivating your kids to teaching the skill of grit to tackling technology and MORE. You'll learn ways to set goals, provide positive sports coaching, nurture your child's character strengths, overcome challenges and SO MUCH MORE.You can learn more about the Happy Child Summit at https://happychildsummit.com/?ref=13. Renee also mentions https://www.characterlab.org, where you can get resources called playbooks that provide evidence-based tools for working with children. And Renee recommends the book, The Self-Driven Child, which you can get at Amazon (https://amzn.to/2F9z9gU). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 052: Celebrating Inspirational Women for International Women's Day
March 8 is International Women's Day, and in honor of this I'm celebrating the women who have inspired me, and I hope that their stories inspire you as well. I start with my grandmother, Mary Ann Reinstein, a Holocaust survivor who lost everything when she was young, lived through a lot of hardships, lived a life of service and never complained. I talk about my mother, Gladys Rockind, a brilliant and accomplished woman who led her college math department for more than 20 years and still raised three children and was the primary homemaker. And I talk about a current coaching client of mine. This woman is battling cancer and the way she is handling it and facing life truly inspires me. Jen Sincero also inspires me. Jen wrote You Are A Badass (https://amzn.to/2IX8c3G) and You Are A Badass At Making Money (https://amzn.to/2IWgj0I), and if you haven't read these books, you must! I pick up and reread her book whenever I need some kickass motivation. Regena Thomashauer, also known as Mama Gena, is an inspiration to me. I have learned so much from her, and I truly adore her. She has spent decades teaching women to stand in their power by connecting with and embracing their joy. I highly recommend her book, Pussy: A Reclamation (https://amzn.to/2J0EpY2). Tererai Trent's life story, her journey from Zimbabwe to poverty in Oklahoma to fighting for her own education while raising four children, is truly inspirational. Oprah said her interview with Tererai Trent was her favorite interview ever, and you can get her book, The Awakened Woman, at Amazon (https://amzn.to/2UpdTZJ). Brene Brown is another woman who truly inspires me. Her book, The Gifts of Imperfection (https://amzn.to/2EMr8NA), changed my life, shifting me from the feeling that I had to be perfect and be ashamed if I wasn't, to developing shame resilience. In this episode I ask you to leave me voicemail at http://purposegirl.com/voicemail, and tell me your name, where you're from, what you love about The PurposeGirl Podcast, and what topics you'd love to hear on this show. I also mention Fab Fit Fun, which has become a sponsor of our show.
