The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 078: Using Post-Traumatic Growth to Help Sick Children and Their Families

At any given time there are countless children spending extended periods of time in hospitals battling serious illnesses. For these children and their loved ones, this can be an incredibly draining, debilitating, isolating experience, but it doesn't have to be. My special guest, colleague, and friend, Lisa Buksbaum, founded Soaring Words, a non-profit whose mission is "to inspire ill children and their families to take active roles in self-healing. Soaringwords is unique as it is the only organization to motivate ill children and families to "pay it forward" to help others. Studies show that when a child does something kind for another child it accelerates transformative healing." Lisa talks about her own journey, and we discuss post-traumatic growth in the context of the tragedies that Lisa has experienced and how they informed her uncovering of her own purpose, and how that led to her forming Soaringwords. You can learn more about and follow Soaringwords on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Soaringwords), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/Soaringwords), Twitter (https://twitter.com/soaringwords), and Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/soaringwords). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 077: Burning Man and Being Your Ideal Self

A few days before recording this I got back from a week at Burning Man. If you're unfamiliar with Burning Man, here's their brief description: "Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome." One of the most amazing aspects of Burning Man is how everyone is encouraged to show up as their authentic self, whatever that may be, and it's truly liberating and exhilarating! In today's episode I use the phenomenon that is Burning Man to discuss the psychological concepts of the actual self versus the ideal self and my own journey to live my ideal self more fully. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 076: Living a Life Without Regret

A dear friend and client of mine passed away a few days ago, and it got me thinking about what it means to live one's life fully, to live so that you don't have regrets. A research study showed that at the end of life, people tended to regret the things they hadn't done more than the things they had done. And so in honor of, and inspired by, my dear friend Brenda, I use the book, The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying, by Bronnie Ware, (which you can get at Amazon -- https://amzn.to/2zeJpAz) to talk about how to avoid having all sorts of regrets at the end of your life. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 075: Loving Our Bodies

The way that our clothing fits has a huge impact not only on how comfortable we feel, but also on how beautiful we feel. My special guest, Elizabeth Olson, has had her own issues around feeling comfortable and beautiful in clothing, and in particular in underwear, and she came to a point where she decided that she wanted to do something about this. With no background in fashion, clothing design, or manufacturing, Elizabeth has launched Cheiks Underwear, "the first women's underwear to offer different butt sizes!" At the time of the release of this episode, August 15, 2019, there is currently a Kickstarter underway for Cheiks, and if you're interested in learning more and hopefully supporting the Kickstarter, you can check it out at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cheiksfounder/cheiks-underwear You can also check out Cheiks at Cheiks.com, at Cheiks on Facebook, and on Instagram (@cheiks_official). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 074: The Seven Sacred Sins that Keep Women Stuck

In my work with women over the years, both through one-on-one coaching and in group programs and retreats, I've identified seven things that tend to keep women stuck, what I've dubbed the Seven Sacred Sins: Self-doubt, self-hatred, shame, sacrifice, being stifled, being scared/survival, and being stuck. In this episode I walk through each of these, how they affect women in particular, and what we can do to combat each one. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 073: Happiness Through Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is more closely tied to wellbeing and happiness than wealth. Those with a high net worth can be extremely unhappy, and those with a relatively low net worth can be very deeply fulfilled. More important than the amount of money in one's bank account is the alignment between how one uses that money and what one values and considers most important. In today's episode, my special guest Manisha Thakor shares with us some of her vast wisdom and experience around financial literacy and offers tremendous guidance and advice about making smart decisions around saving, spending, investing, and more. If you have or are planning to work with a financial advisor, Manisha has some critical advice on making sure that the advisor has your best interests in mind and has the right overall philosophy. Manisha Thakor is a nationally renowned financial literacy advocate for women who has worked in the financial services industry for 25 years. Her wisdom has been featured in a wide range of national media outlets including: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNBC, The Today Show, Dr. Oz, Women's Health, Glamour and Real Simple. Manisha sits on the board of The National Endowment for Financial Education, and is on faculty at The Omega Institute's Women's Leadership Center. She is also the co-author of two personal finance primers for young women in their 20s and 30s called On My Own Two Feet (https://amzn.to/2ysxVJd) and Get Financially Naked. (https://amzn.to/32X0dJY) Manisha earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and her BA from Wellesley College. During this episode Manisha recommended a number of books: Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin (https://amzn.to/2KaBDho) The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsay (https://amzn.to/2SYob2O) Pay It Down! by Jean Chatzky (https://amzn.to/2T0GSmH) A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf (https://amzn.to/334H9ty) Fat is a Feminist Issue by Suzie Orbach (https://amzn.to/2T7MZpv) To learn more about Manisha Thakor, you can connect with her on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ManishaThakor/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/manishathakor/), LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/manishathakor), and Twitter (https://twitter.com/ManishaThakor), and check out her website (https://moneyzen.com). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 072: Turning Pain Into Purpose

I'm recording this episode on July 24, which is the anniversary of one of the greatest tragedies of my life. In today's episode I open up about what happened and how it affected me. I then take you through the process I went through to turn this pain into purpose, in the hopes that you can learn to do the same with some of the challenges in your own life, and I do this through the Kubler-Ross grief model. I also talk about Post Traumatic Growth. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 071: How to Discover Your Voice and Use it Proudly

It's an unfortunate fact that many women have been silenced, their voices have been suppressed, they don't feel free to speak their truth, and this has a wide range of harmful effects on our lives, from interpersonal to professional and beyond. My special guest today, Megan Jo Wilson, has been a certified professional co-active life coach for 15 years and, among other things, teaches women (and recently men as well) how to discover their voice and learn to use it proudly. We talk about the many reasons why women lose their voice and how Megan helps them reclaim it. To learn more about Megan Jo Wilson, you can connect with her on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/megan.j.wilson.90) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/meganjowilson/), and check out her Rockstar Camp website (www.rockstarcamp.live).
