108 Fostering Wellness as an Act of Social Change with Ilana Nankin
Scientific research in relation to positive psychology has proven that emotions are contagious up to three degrees of separation. It's a fact: the way we show up to the people around us has a direct effect on how our social environment responds. In consequence, how we work with our own emotions is crucial, and learning to do so can become a powerful tool for our own self-improvement and the betterment of those around us. In this episode of The PurposeGirl Podcast, I'm fortunate to be joined by Ilana Nankin, an award-winning entrepreneur, master educator, and expert yoga trainer committed to using wellness as a vehicle for social change. Ilana shares with us how taking up yoga lessons was a life changing experience for her, and how she went from being an overwhelmed teacher at an under-resourced school in San Francisco, to starting a revolutionary movement that aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of the overall educative community. In this episode, Ilana and I discuss the following: The importance of self-care; learning to put yourself first in order to build a healthy sense of community. Powerful tools that can be helpful to deal with the current global context, such as intention setting and gratitude practice. The concept of emotional contagion and how the way we show up to people has a direct effect on others. Limiting beliefs, and learning how to replace them with empowering beliefs despite any given circumstances. Mission and vision as key elements behind a successful entrepreneurship. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 107 Shifting to an Optimistic Thinking Style
Do you consider yourself to be an optimist or a pessimist? Actually, whether you choose one over the other, technically, you'd be wrong. Psychological studies have proven that optimism and pessimism are not invariable character traits, but moldable features related to our way of thinking. And here's the good news: No matter what your circumstances are - optimistic thinking is something that anyone can learn! Along the way I talk about… The benefits of an optimistic way of thinking, and how it helps us achieve better physical and mental health, professional success and quality relationships. The "explanatory style" – Analyzing how we explain a difficult situation in order to transform our mental habits. The importance of becoming aware of our own response to adversity and challenge, so that we can actually to do something about it. Four really powerful tips: the "ABCDE" thinking, the "worst case, best case, most likely scenario" technique, the Genius of Hope, and Desire. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! And please spread the word and help our community grow! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 106: Balanced in Body and Empowered from Within with Sadie Lincoln
When I first started PurposeGirl I started with the dream of creating a movement of women coming together in their power and shifting the world for the better. I've always been fascinated by movements of women that start organically, where women gather and take a stand for something together. My guest today has created such a movement, a movement that has been leading people to feel empowered in their minds and bodies. My guest today is Sadie Lincoln, the co-founder and CEO of barre3. In today's episode of The PurposeGirl Podcast, Sadie talks about: Working out at home shortly after the birth of her first child and what she learned about listening to her own inner voice. The importance of paying attention to what she really needs, and the importance of building a company by paying attention to what people really need. The need to be intentional in defying the countless messages coming at us that attempt to disempower us around our bodies. How some member of the fitness community send exactly the wrong kinds of messages, and how barre3 is different. The emphasis on encouraging modifications at barre3, where members are taught many variations on poses and exercises so they can choose what to do based on what their bodies really need, thereby empowering them to choose for themselves. A new way of thinking about what it means to be a badass. What it means to be empowered from within. The impact of having been raised by a sisterhood of women. How the idea of belonging and community is core to barre3. The importance of having one's business be driven by purpose. Getting clear on your distilled essence is the hardest thing you'll do. The importance of self-awareness practices. Barre3 retreats You can learn more about and follow barre3 on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/barre3company), Twitter (https://twitter.com/barre3), and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/barre3 and https://www.instagram.com/sadielincoln/). What started as a workout has blossomed into a full-blown movement made up of millions of people focused on body positivity, being empowered, and redefining what success in fitness means. Sadie is on Inc.'s Female Founders 100 list, has been featured on NPR's How I Built This, and speaks regularly on the topics of mindful leadership, the power of body wisdom, and the movement to redefine what success in fitness means. The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 104: How to Rise Above the Chaos and Thrive
Because of Coronavirus, we need tips and tools to boost immunity, stay positive, and regain hope, and in this episode, I give you all my tools. Suddenly, many of us have had our lives changed in ways we couldn't have predicted, and we're now quarantined or sheltering in place, practicing social distancing, and pretty much staying at home. Many are struggling with anxiety and fear for what their future holds, but we can also use this time to go inwards, to be more contemplative, to ponder the bigger questions about our life and our purpose. For so many of us, our lives have been busy and chaotic and overwhelming and go-go-go. Being busy and always doing has been a badge of honor, but we can use this time to slow down, reconnect with what matters - those we love, and ourselves. We can use this time for purpose. To discover who we are and what we want in life. In today's episode I show you ways you can work with your stress right now, rise above it, and use this time to move towards and support your highest, most purposeful selves. I talk about My morning routine from a few weeks ago, when I delivered Amazon's keynote for International Women's Day, and the day before giving it I was told that instead of a room of 600 people it would be entirely live-streamed. I was stressed and frustrated, and I share with you the tools I used to shift this so that I gave an outstanding, inspiring talk. The impact of movement, and moving stress out of our bodies. How regular exercise helps strengthen our immune system, so important right now in our current situation, and I offer tips for getting your exercise. The importance of proper and focused breathing to our wellbeing. The benefits of a regular meditation practice and tips for getting started. The health benefits of smiling and laughing. Having gratitude for what we do have instead of frustration over what we don't have, and a simple gratitude practice that everyone should be doing. The health benefits of nature, and how you can get your nature fix even if you need to stay indoors. The importance of community, of finding sisterhood. I announce my upcoming Goddess On Purpose course, for which the doors will be opening a few days after this episode is published. Reach out to my team (josh@purposegirl.com) to get on the waitlist, or to register if the doors have opened by the time you hear this. You can pre-order my new book (or order it, depending on when you listen to this), Wonderful You, at Amazon here (https://amzn.to/2WEF4U6). The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 101: Reclaim Your Power with Aria Tru
Have you ever been SO angry that you wanted to smash something, throw something against the wall, or even hit someone? It's perfectly normal to feel anger and frustration, but we need to have appropriate outlets for these more challenging emotions or we'll end up doing something destructive, like taking it out on someone. In today's episode of The PurposeGirl Podcast, I'm joined by Aria Tru, NLP Transformational Life Coach and founder of Women Breaking Plates, an organization she formed to give women a fun, cathartic way to break free of old habits, patterns, traumas, and emotions. As the name of the organization suggests, at Women Breaking Plates events, women have the opportunity to write on plates the things that no longer serve them, things they want to get rid of, and then shatter them. This is part of a larger event in which women support each other, are supported by a variety of healers, and take physical actions that help make shifts in their own bodies and in their lives. In this episode, Aria talks about: The importance of recognizing that one is able to change, and making a decision and taking steps to change How traumatic events enter our bodies through our five senses and how we need to learn new ways to rewire our system to process and release the traumas Our sacred rage that needs to be expressed Instead of thinking about having emotional blockages, see it as emotions that haven't yet been expressed The importance of acknowledging and listening to the hurt parts of ourselves The Empowerment Parties held by Women Breaking Plates The Full Body YES! You can learn more about Aria Tru at her website (https://www.womenbreakingplates.com/), follow her on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WomenBreakingPlates/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/womenbreakingplates/), and check out a video of an Empowerment Party on YouTube (https://youtu.be/heHxW6RhrDo). And, if you're in the LA area, she's holding her next event March 7 in LA. It would really mean a lot to me if you would go to Apple Podcasts and leave me a review (hopefully a great one!), leave a 5 star rating, subscribe to this podcast so you never miss an episode, and download the episodes! The PurposeGirl Podcast Episode 100: Highlights from the First 100 Episodes
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all my listeners! I had no idea where this journey would take me when it started, but after 100 episodes, over 150,000 downloads, and hitting the top 20 in dozens of countries around the world, it's clear that there are a LOT of women out there who are on this journey with me. I've received so many wonderful reviews, emails, and private messages from women whose lives I've changed, women who have felt heard and seen and supported through The PurposeGirl Podcast, and I dedicate this episode to you, my wonderful listeners, my PurposeGirls! In today's episode I recap some of the highlights from the first 100 episodes, some of the episodes that brought the most feedback and engagement. In the first few episodes I talked about the importance of our own happiness, both to ourselves and to those around us. In Episode 8 I talked about our own pleasure, which was a pretty edgy episode to do early on, and I'm proud that I did it. In Episode 9 I talked about our "dark side," let you know that it's OK to have anger and grief and the "darker" emotions, and addressed how to work with these feelings. Episodes 15 and 19 were about sisterhood and women helping women, and I talk about lifting each other up instead of feeling competition with other women. Episodes 22 and 96 were all about fears that many of us have, and how we can shift these fears into courage. I've talked about self-love in a number of episodes. In Episode 7 I interviewed Stacey Hoffer, in Episode 99 I interviewed Crystal Langen, and in Episode 48 I talked all about what self-love is and its many different levels, and how we can increase our own self-love. In Episode 51 I talked about the special relationship between mothers and daughters, and I interviewed two guest experts about how to strengthen this relationship. In Episode 74 I talked about the "seven sacred sins" that keep women stuck, and I received a lot of feedback about this one. It really resonated for a lot of you. In Episode 85 I talk about how to thrive and help others thrive at work. I received more messages about Episode 90 than any other. In Episode 90 I interviewed Todd Pressman about anxiety, an issue I've struggled with in my own life, and Todd takes me through an exercise that he created to get down to one's core fears. In several recent Episodes (see Episode 94, as well as 98 where I talk about our money stories) I've talked about launching purpose-based businesses, and many of you told me this really resonated for you. In this episode I announce a contest where I'm giving away an Activation Session, a coaching experience with me valued at $1000. To enter, subscribe to this podcast and leave a 5-star review, take a screenshot of both (it's fine if you already left a review a while ago, just take a picture of that), and email the screenshots to [josh@purposegirl.com]! I'll be picking one winner at random on March 1, so send them in by the end of February 29 (EST)! In this episode I also announced that we're going to be holding a Mother-Daughter Retreat the first weekend in May in my home in Philadelphia! To learn more go to [purposegirl.com/motherdaughter].
