Lex Young Recaps Running A Historic 13:43 5k As A Junior In High School

Less than 24 hours ago, Lex Young, a junior in high school, ran the second-fastest 5k ever by a US high schooler. Lex ran 13:43.95 putting him #2 all-time right behind the legend Galen Rupp. He did this at Sound Running's "Track Meet". I thought it'd be a cool idea to get his immediate thoughts post-race and got him back on the podcast! We do a deep dive into the race last night. From his intentions going into the race to mentally willing himself forward when the lactic hit to his post-race stomach struggles. This fifteen-minute recap of this historic race is well worth listening to! If you want to help us out please like, subscribe, and share. In episode sixty-one of The Running Effect, I have the great privilege of speaking with Lex and Leo Young. While I'm sure 99% of you are familiar with them, for those that aren't, Lex and Leo are two of the greatest high school distance runners in history. And they're only juniors (: Following in the footsteps of their older brother Nico, Lex and Leo run for Newbury Park High School. Newbury Park is debatably the greatest high school distance program ever. Since freshman year, Lex and Leo have completely rewritten the record books. If I were to write a list of their accomplishments I would run out of space on this post. The scary thing is that they're only juniors and have a whole nother year! In this episode, we dive-deep into their start in the sport of running, all things Newbury Park, handling pressure from the outside world, future goals, and so much more! We also do a little twin trivia to find out which twin knows the other one the best! This episode is a really fun one and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. We also answer all your fun listener questions. They span from who would win in bare-knuckle boxing to how they balance school and running. The State of The Running Effect Hosted By Olympian & American Record Holder Elise Cranny | A Deep-Dive Into The Beginnings & Future Of The Podcast

This week's episode of the podcast is a very unique one. In July 2020, I started The Running Effect, and since then, I've had the great privilege of speaking to over 60+ amazing guests. Many of you who are avid listeners of the podcast probably don't know the origins of the podcast. So when my good friend Elise Cranny came to me with the idea of doing a show giving listeners an inside look at who I am and how The Running Effect started I couldn't pass! In this episode, we go through my start in the sport of running (which is actually quite hilarious), where the idea of starting a podcast came from, lessons learned from almost 60 episodes, and many other fun questions! I hope this episode will give you all an inside look at the inner workings of this podcast and what our future plans look like! Starting a podcast at 15 years old is far from normal, but I'm immensely glad I did. Being able to help fellow young runners in their pursuit of success is a very rewarding feeling. I hope to continue to push the sport forward through this podcast.  Lastly, a massive thank you to Elise for hosting this episode. She's been one of my biggest supporters from Day 1 and is constantly helping out behind the scenes. I joke that she's the CEO of the company, but twisting the meaning to Chief-Encouragement-Officer. Elise truly is one of the most selfless, encouraging, and kindest people I've ever had the privilege to know. One of the most important pieces of advice I was given early in life was to surround yourself with people who will push you to be the best version of yourself. Elise has certainly done that and then some! Not only has Elise helped me become a better human being, but has helped improve this podcast as well. Professional athletes will always say that they strive to be good athletes on and off the track, and Elise is the gold standard for that.  If you want to help us out please like, subscribe, and share. You can also give us a five-star review on Spotify! Bowerman Track Club's Thomas Ratcliffe Talks About Running 4:01 (Mile) in High School, Stanford Years, Dealing With Injuries, And More!

In episode fifty-seven of The Running Effect, I speak with Thomas Ratcliffe. In high school, Thomas was a phenomenal athlete. Some of the most notable accomplishments were a handful of state titles and running 4:01 in the mile (a Massachusetts state record). Not only did he excel in running, but also in soccer where he led his team to a state title. To my knowledge, he's the only boy to win a soccer state championship in the Fall and then run 4:01 in the mile the following Spring. Thomas then went on to a successful career at Stanford. As a freshman, Thomas was named the PAC-12 Freshman of the Year. The few following seasons were spent rehabbing some serious injuries. After recovering from those, Thomas placed third at NCAAs in 2019 in the 5k. The following year, Thomas transferred to the University of North Carolina where he finished out his NCAA eligibility. Following the NCAA outdoor championships last summer, Thomas signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club! He is currently a member of the team training for some big upcoming races in the next few months.  In this episode, we do a deep dive into Thomas's career from high school all the way up to the present day. We go through the ups, downs, and everything in-between! It was a pleasure getting to know Thomas and hear his story. I can't wait to see what this year has in store for him! LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (: In episode fifty-five of The Running Effect, I speak with Anna Rohrer. In high school, Anna was a phenomenal athlete. She was a two-time Foot Locker National Champion and was the Gatorade Cross Country National Player of the year in 2014-2015. Anna then went on to an extremely successful career at the University of Notre Dame where she was an 8-time All-American. At Notre Dame, Anna got an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and a master's degree in business management. Anna uses both the skills she learned as an athlete, and skills she learned from studying Neuroscience in both her jobs currently. Firstly, Anna is a mindset coach at a company called, "Dreamfuel". At Dreamfuel, Anna teaches high level companies the mental performance skills needed to maximize their performance. She also has her own company called, "Next Level Racing" where she trains athletes both physically and mentally. In this episode, we do a massive deep dive into the mental performance world. We talk about and go through subjects such as: confidence, belief, pressure, goal-setting (and how dopamine affects it from a neurological standpoint), the importance of being process-oriented, the importance of failure, visualization, and so so much more! Whether you're the best runner in the country or the CEO of a company, the wisdom Anna shares in this episode is very applicable to everyday life. Colleen Little, PT, DPT, OCS, On Lessons Learned From Working With The Bowerman Track Club, Tokyo Olympics, & Project Eclipse!

LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (: In episode fifty-five of The Running Effect, I speak with Colleen Little PT, DPT, OCS. Colleen is a full-time physical therapist for Nike working closely with the renowned Bowerman Track Club. Before becoming a PT, Colleen was an accomplished soccer player at the University of Portland where she was a 2xNCAA champion (2002 & 2005). After she graduated college she started running and has actually won two marathons in her career. In this episode we dive deep into Colleen's incredible soccer career where she won two NCAA titles and the lessons she learned from her legendary Coach, Clive Charles. We then dive into her time at the Bowerman Track Club, helping Shalane Flanagan come back from knee surgery, the Olympics, fixing Grant Fisher's calf right before his 5k prelim, Project Eclipse, and so much more! Many people see the results of the Bowerman Track Club, but don't see the people behind their success. One of the main people behind their success who gets little recognition is Colleen. Colleen works day in and day out to make sure these athletes are healthy to maximize their potential! Colleen was also a vital part of "Project Eclipse". This project was for US distance legend Shalane Flanagan to run all six World Marathon Majors within 42 days. Colleen was there every single day helping with whatever Shalane needed. Shalane ended up finishing this momentous challenge and attributes a lot of her success to Colleen's care and guidance. Anyone that has spoken to Colleen will know she's more than just a world class PT, but also a world class human. I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with her and hope you do as well!
