Nico Young Shares His Journey: NAU & Newbury Park, Lessons Learned, Dealing With Pressure, & Being One Of The Best Runners In The Country
LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (:
In episode fifty-four of The Running Effect, I have the great privilege of speaking with Nico Young. Nico is undoubtedly one of the greatest prep stars that America has ever had. In high school, Nico cemented himself as one of the greatest high school runners ever (in my opinion he's the greatest). In just his senior year, he went undefeated all year and won NXN setting a course record along the way despite horrible conditions. He was also excellent in the classroom with a 4.68 GPA. Excelling both academically and in running, Nico won the 2019-2020 Gatorade Boys Cross Country & Track and Field Player of the Year. An award reserved for only the best of the best. Due to the pandemic, Nico never got the chance to compete his senior year track season which makes his high school career accolades all the more impressive!
After Nico graduated high school, he then went onto attend Northern Arizona University (NAU). At NAU, Nico has only continued to flourish. Within just two years, Nico is one of the top runners in the NCAA. Last summer Nico qualified for the US Olympic Trials placing 9th in the 5k final beating a handful of professionals. He has also placed top-ten at multiple NCAA championships and helped his team win team titles.
Nico currently holds the US High School National Records in the 2k & 3k and US U20 indoor and outdoor 5k records.
Many people see the results, but don't see all the work that went into the result. In this episode, we try to unpack Nico's successful career the best we can! We do a big deep dive into Nico's career from his start in the sport in fifth grade to his future in the sport. We talk about pressure, having a "process over outcomes" mindset, working on the mental side of running, working with two amazing coaches in his career (Mike Smith and Sean Brosnan), NCAA Championships, what makes NAU special, and so so much more!
It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Nico and get a deeper understanding of his journey in this sport! I can't wait to see what the future holds for him. The saying "The sky is the limit" is truly the case for Nico Young.
Nico's high school coach encapsulates just how special Nico is with this quote, "I don’t know when I will ever see another athlete with Nico’s talent or ability to push himself beyond his limits along with the curiosity to see how truly great he can be. He’s a once-in-a-lifetime athlete."

Nike & BTC Athlete Vanessa Fraser Shares Invaluable Lessons on Injuries, Confidence, The Process, And Lots More!
LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (:
In episode fifty-three of The Running Effect, I speak with Vanessa Fraser. Vanessa is a very accomplished runner who runs for Nike & the Bowerman Track Club. She most notably holds personal bests of 31:52 (10k) and 14:48 (5k). In high school, Vanessa was a two-time state champion in the state of California and helped her team to reach the state tournament for the first time in school history. During her time at Stanford, she helped her team finish runner-up twice in the DMR and still holds the school record of 15:09 in the 5k. Vanessa's college coach Chris Miltenburg would tell his athletes to "leave the team in a better place than you found it". Vanessa certainly did that and her impact on the Stanford program is still felt to this day. After Vanessa graduated, she signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club.
In this episode we dive deep into Vanessa's career; the ups, the downs, and everything in-between! Vanessa has battled a lot of adversity in her career, from massive Achilles surgery to not performing as well as she would have liked to in many races. Vanessa shares invaluable insights on confidence, trying to be process-oriented, learning from teammates, goal setting, and so much more! Vanessa embodies the definition of grit. Grit as defined by renowned psychologist Angela Duckworth is having, "passion and perseverance for long-term goals." Vanessa's passion and perseverance for the sport of running is truly felt in this episode.
I personally can't wait to see what the future holds for Vanessa!

In episode fifty-two of The Running Effect, I speak with Micaela DeGenero. After battling Covid earlier this year, Micaela bounced back making her first-ever NCAA Indoor Championship meet. After qualifying for the final, she texted her boyfriend saying, "I just hope I don't get last place". Not only did she make the meet, but with a 61-second last lap won her first-ever NCAA title in dominant fashion.
In this episode we go through Micaela's backstory in the sport of running, her years of running at Michigan, why she thinks it's important to focus on achieving high marks in the classroom, what went into the decision to transfer to Colorado, how she's dealt with injuries and low confidence, her journey to making the NCAA meet, her championship race, and so much more!
It was an absolute pleasure getting to speak with Micaela for the first time and hear her inspiring story. Keep your eyes peeled for lots more of Micaela on the national stage!

In episode fifty of The Running Effect, I speak with my good friend Elise Cranny. Elise is quickly cementing herself as one of the greatest American Women distance runners of all time. Just within the past thirteen months, she has won her first Olympic Trials (in the 5k), competed in her first Olympics, set a new American Record in the indoor 5k (14:33), and the second time in American History in the 10k (30:14).

Sean McGorty Shares Lessons On Disappointment, Adversity, Support Systems, & Training With BTC
LIKE | SUBSCRIBE | SHARE (:
In episode forty-nine of The Running Effect (with Dominic Schlueter), I speak with my good friend Sean McGorty.
In this episode, we go through Sean's crazy past year. In 2021, he got his feet wet (pun intended) in a new event the steeplechase, underwent his second-ever Achilles surgery, and narrowly fell short of making his first Olympic team.
I personally can't wait to see all that Sean has in store for 2022 and beyond! A quote from Winston Churchill that I think embodies Sean's mindset well, "Success is going from failure to failure without any loss of enthusiasm". Sean has sacrificed so much to get to the level he's at now and continues to have a positive and contagious attitude. He's gone through two massive Achilles surgeries, missed an Olympic team, and battled other adversity, but yet still keeps on fighting. Sean's fighting spirit is one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen.
