Venturing Beyond the Track: Vanessa Fraser on Her Dual Pursuits in Pro-Running and Venture Capital

Back on the podcast, today is the one and only, Vanessa Fraser! Vanessa is a pro runner for Nike and is coached by the legendary Shalane Flanagan. She holds PRs of 4:09 in the 1500m, 14:48 in the 5k, and 31:52 in the 10k. In college, she was one of the most storied runners in Stanford history, where she was a 7xAll-American, and her school record of 15:09 in the 5k still stands. Last year Vanessa began working at Benchmark Venture Capital, where she has thrived in this new environment while still pursuing her dreams on the track. In this conversation, Vanessa takes me through her decision to go into the Venture Capitalist world, her reflections on setbacks, and her goals for running, life, and business this next year. THE CALL ROOM With Connor Burns & Simeon Birnbaum | Episode 2: National Record Hunting At Arcadia

Episode 2 is a massive preview of the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, a recap of the previous week of training, Simeon's journey of playing the Saxophone, and Connor beating kids blindfolded in Chess. This episode is an all-time great. I hope you all enjoy as much as we did, and stay tuned in Episode 3 to see if that NR of 8:33 is lowered.  ABOUT THE CALL ROOM: Introducing The Call Room With Connor Burns & Simeon Birnbaum.  The Running Effect will document their season in-depth this outdoor track season. Each week, Connor and Simeon will pull back the curtain and show you how they train physically and mentally and handle failure, adversity, and the ups and downs that ensue this season.  Connor Burns ran 3:58.83 in the mile last June, becoming the first high schooler from Missouri to break the four-minute barrier. He is also a reigning national champion in the 3200m and became the fifth-ever high schooler to break four minutes in the mile indoors by running 3:59.11. Most recently, Connor became a national champion indoors in the 2-mile by running 8:43.24. Connor has committed to run for The University of Oregon this fall.  Simeon Birnbaum is the first sixteen-year-old in America to break four minutes in the mile. He did this by running a 3:59.51 while winning a national title in that same race. Simeon also holds a personal best of 1:50.12 in the 800m. Simeon holds the South Dakota state records in the 3200m, 1600m, and 800m. Simeon has committed to run for The University of Oregon this fall.  This season Connor and Simeon are chasing history; we are here to document it in a historic and unprecedented fashion. Over the coming months, Connor and Simeon will dive deep into their outdoor campaign leading into big invitationals, state championships, national record attempts, and national meets. We will go into their training, racing, mindset, and answer your questions along the way! Colorado's Emily Covert On Finding Beauty In The Struggle

Emily Covert joins the podcast today. Emily is an incredibly accomplished runner for the University of Colorado, where she is a four-time All-American. Most notably, Emily placed fourth last year at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She holds PRs of 15:35.4 in the 5k and 32:30.82 in the 10k. In high school, Emily was a multi-time Minnesota state champion and was consistently one of the top runners in the country. On the grass, she placed 4th at NXN, and on the track, she placed 2nd at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. In this conversation, Emily takes us through her journey in the sport, from state titles in high school to ambitions of winning an NCAA title in college. She takes us through her setbacks, including dealing with stress fractures, mono, and more. I loved hearing Emily's thoughts on setbacks and how she gets through them. Emily also talks about leadership, community, playing the long game, the importance of her faith, and much more! I loved this conversation with Emily. Crayton Carrozza Shares His Journey & Ascent To The Top Of The NCAA

Texas legend Crayton Carrozza hops on the podcast today for a highly impactful and entertaining episode. Superstar Natalie Cook Shares Her Journey From Breaking National Records To Ambitions In The NCAA

The one and only, the legendary Natalie Cook, comes on The Running Effect Podcast today! Natalie is one of the most accomplished athletes of our generation. Natalie currently competes for Okhlama State University, where she has quickly cemented herself as one of the top NCAA runners in the country. Most recently, she placed 7th at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Then a few weeks later, she followed that up by running a blistering 15:24.26 in the 5k. In high school, Natalie was named the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year in 2021, becoming the first female athlete from Texas to win the award after she was the first athlete in girls' high school history to win both the Garmin RunningLane and Eastbay Cross Country Championships for the coveted individual national championship double. In the former, Cook recorded the second-fastest 5K time in high school history, posting a time of 16:03.93 to win the individual championship. She also won the Texas 6A state championship race by a historic 56 seconds on her way to helping Flower Mound to the team title. This conversation was one I've been wanting to make happen for far too long, so it was a true honor to make it happen! A Conversation With One Of The World's Top Marathoners: Emma Bates

I am stoked to welcome Emma Bates to the podcast! Emma is an incredibly accomplished marathoner who has competed at the highest of stages. Emma grew up in Minnesota, where she consistently performed at the highest level in her state. She then took her talents (or rather work ethic) to Boise State University, where she won the 2014 NCAA 10k Championship Race and was a 12xAll-American. Emma currently competes for Asics and is a member of Team BOSS based in Boulder, Colorado. Since moving up to the marathon, Emma has consistently been one of the best in the world. In 2021, Emma placed second at the renowned Chicago Marathon. Last year Emma placed 7th at the 2022 Eugene World Champions in a personal best time of 2:23:18 (5:27 pace). Needless to say, Emma is at the forefront of US Women's Distance Running. In this conversation, Emma takes us through her preparation leading into the 2023 Boston Marathon, including a mind-boggling long run, how she works on the mental side of the sport, dealing with setbacks and comparison, giving advice to high school Emma, what it's like being coached by Joe Bosshard and being a member of Team BOSS, what she wants to be remembered for, and so much more! Iowa High School Superstar Jackson Heidesch Shares His Journey & Ambitions Within The Sport

Jackson Heidesch is a kid on fire.  This past indoor season, he won the Hoka Misfit 2-mile in a historic time of 8:42.6. He then went on to place second at NBNI in the 2-mile and two days later won the mile in stunning fashion diving for the win and a 4:02.25. This past fall on the grass, Jackson won NXR Northeast and placed 5th at NXN. He has also won back-to-back individual and team state titles. Jackson has etched his name into the Iowa high school history books through these historic performances.  In this conversation, Jackson takes us through his history in the sport, from a freshman who was just starting to gain interest in the sport to a 4:02 miler with plans of breaking the four-minute-mile barrier.  We also discuss what made Duke stand out from other schools, winning his first national meet in dramatic fashion (reference image), his goals for this upcoming year, how he wants to be remembered in Iowa history, how he's handling March Madness Ls, the power of training through Iowa winters, and much more!
