Saving Your Thyroid Through Radiofrequency Ablation with Dr. Angela Mazza

Thyroid nodules are extremely common, with about 1 in 3 people having one in their lifetime.Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been used for years for treating various issues, from tumors to varicose veins. In 2018, the FDA approved RFA for use on benign compressive thyroid nodules, finally offering many people facing thyroid surgery a good alternative.RFA offers a targeted option for long-term ablation in the nodule while leaving the rest of the thyroid completely intact. With no anesthesia, no downtime from work, and no thyroidectomy scar, it's an excellent option that we couldn’t access until recently here in the US.Today I’m excited to talk to Dr. Angela Mazza, the only provider of RFA for thyroid nodules in Central Florida. Triple board-certified in endocrinology, internal medicine, and anti-aging and regenerative medicine, Angela D. Mazza, DO, ABAARM, FAAMFM, ECNU, CDE, diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions like thyroid disease and hormonal imbalance. As a Doctor of Osteopathy, she and her team take a holistic approach to healthcare based on the latest medical findings and lifestyle modifications. Together, they treat the entire person, not just the condition. Dr. Angela is a thyroid specialist who earned her ECNU certification and specializes in RFA procedures for thyroid nodules. In this conversation, Dr. Angela and I talked about why she was excited to start offering RFA, the types of patients that made good candidates for RFA, what to expect from the procedure, potential side effects, RFA versus thyroid surgery, and more. Risks of Iodine Contrast Agents and Thyroid Health

Iodine contrast media is used in several radiological procedures, such as CT scans. With a typical dose of iodine contrast medium containing about 13,500 micrograms of free iodine, along with 15-60 grams of bound iodine that may be liberated as free iodine in the body, this represents an acute iodine load for the body. From the research I’ve done, contrast media seems to be a concern, especially for those with hyperthyroidism, although it could potentially affect those with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.Today I’m breaking down what five research studies show about the risk of contrast media for those with thyroid conditions and whether there are particular cases where it’s a bigger concern. In this episode, you’ll learn what research studies show about:The amount of iodine in contrast medium far exceeds the minimum amounts which have been shown to cause iodine-induced hyperthyroidism Potential for an increase in the risk of iodine contrast media-induced thyroid dysfunctionCases where iodine contrast media can cause thyroid dysfunction in euthyroid nodule goiter patientsRate of occurrence of iodine contrast media-induced thyroid dysfunctionAs always, I hope you found this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! To learn more, visit the show notes at https://savemythyroid.com/podcast/risks-of-iodine-contrast-agents-and-thyroid-health/. Discussing The Brain-Gut-Thyroid Axis with Dr. Shane Steadman

“Our bodies are too complex to think that one thing can fix every body.” - Dr. Shane SteadmanIt’s not enough to do a thyroid panel and start taking medication. We need to dig into why the thyroid isn’t functioning optimally in the first place. If we want to get to the root cause of why the thyroid isn't working, we must address issues related to the brain and gut. Today I’m joined by chiropractic neurologist Dr. Shane Steadman to discuss the role of the brain in thyroid function and autoimmunity and how the brain-gut-thyroid axis works.Dr. Shane Steadman is a Chiropractic Neurologist and one of only a handful of Chiropractic Neurologists in the entire state of Colorado. Dr. Steadman is an expert in treating and supporting “tough cases” such as concussions, migraines, vertigo, peripheral neuropathy, autoimmune conditions, thyroid and hormonal disorders as well as other health conditions. He has completed numerous hours of postgraduate and advanced studies in functional neurology and functional medicine, including functional blood chemistry and thyroid issues, as well as neurotransmitters and brain function through the University of Bridgeport. Dr. Steadman is the owner of Integrated Health Systems in Denver, Colorado. This was a fantastic interview, and I learned so much from Dr. Steadman. We talked about why we shouldn’t look at the thyroid in isolation, how neurological conditions can lead to thyroid dysfunction and vice versa, Dr. Steadman’s approach to testing and treatment, the connection between leaky gut and brain fog, and more. This conversation had so many nuggets that would benefit anyone with a thyroid or autoimmune thyroid condition. To learn more, visit the show notes at https://savemythyroid.com/podcast/discussing-the-brain-gut-thyroid-axis-with-dr-shane-steadman-066/. Why are legumes not part of an AIP or Paleo diet?

Legumes are a good source of vegetarian protein and contain many beneficial nutrients. Unfortunately, they also have compounds that can interfere with intestinal permeability and nutrient absorption, which is why they’re excluded from a strict AIP or paleo diet. While some people can get away with eating legumes, I prefer a more conservative approach in my recommendations to people with Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s.Today I’m talking about legumes and your gut health, my approach to reintroducing them into the diet, and how to prepare them to reduce their negative impact. In this episode, you’ll learn:Why legumes are excluded from a standard AIP dietHealth benefits and risks associated with eating legumesReintroducing legumes into your dietKey considerations for vegetariansWhy I recommend starting with a stricter diet before reintroducing legumesHow to properly prepare legumesAs always, I hope you found this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode. To learn more, visit the show notes at https://savemythyroid.com/podcast/why-are-legumes-not-part-of-an-aip-or-paleo-diet/.
