S2 Episode 18: Unpacking the Patriarchy with Rev Karla, Spiritual Teacher

Rev Karla is a spiritual teacher who understands the pain and confusion experienced by those who have suffered religious trauma. Having overcome her own struggles, she is dedicated to helping others recover from their traumas, reclaim their spirituality, and find purpose and authenticity in their lives. Religious trauma can be a difficult and uncomfortable conversation, however; to shy away from any topic or conversation because it’s uncomfortable can be a disservice. So many don’t know what they’re shying away from because they’ve never had a voice, so for many of us to even start a conversation about difficult topics is hard, let alone to have an opinion about them. I’ve noticed that at times, some don’t have an identity outside of their beliefs so if they’re asked to have a difficult conversation or if they “perceive” that their beliefs are being challenged, it’s often viewed as a personal attack. The main point of this episode was to highlight that we can lovingly and peacefully agree to disagree or feel differently about things and still recognize that we have deep affection and respect for each other and acknowledge that even with the best of intentions; people can get hurt and it is unhealthy to overlook that pain or their lived experience in the name of anything. I knew this conversation would for sure raise some eyebrows, which is fine because while the eyebrows are raised; there are so many things to talk about.
