I would say it's always justified to be angry. I'm not a mental health professional, but I know that humans are emotional creatures and that an emotion is just that. It's something that washes over you. It's something that's calling for your body to take an action. It's the response to the emotion oftentimes, that is not appropriate, but the emotions... I think we have to have access to our emotions. I found that for me, from coming home from combat, to learning to perform on stage, and as a speaker, and a storyteller, if I don't have access to my emotions, and if I'm self-editing and changing what I feel in the moment, man, I don't think that's healthy. More importantly, it's how we respond to the emotions that makes the difference. Well, here is a tip, “Anger Makes You Stupid”. Leaders at all levels are giving their power away. If you don't believe me, look at the recent election and look at the way people are treating each other. Friends that have been friends for decades unfriending, at the minimum, all the way over to people bashing each other with ax handles over political ideology. Okay, fine, I get it. We all have values and beliefs, but there's a point where you cross a threshold, and you go into a trance-like state of fear or anger-based emotion, where the elephant is in charge of the rider, and that's what's going on these days. If we're waiting for somebody to come riding over the hill on a white horse or a black horse and save the day, we're going to be waiting a long time. Nobody's coming. Leadership starts with us. Trust is a measurable thing. According to Stephen Covey Jr, we can see that when businesses lose trust, it affects their bottom line. It affects efficiency. Speed goes down when trust depletes. Here at Rooftop, we spend a lot of time talking about different kinds of trusts, “bonding trust versus bridging trust”, and if you haven't heard those podcasts, I really recommend that you go to the episodes on those subjects and dig in. One of the hardest things that I've found as a leader, and what I hear all the time, is that when you're in a crisis situation, like the one we are in today, where there is persistent fear, a persistent uncertainty, there will be a level of isolation that comes from the mandated separation that we are all enduring at this moment in time. You put all those things together and that conspires to form a pretty rough environment. It does form a persistent crisis. Leading in a short-term crisis is one thing, if the market tanks or you have an overage of a certain kind and you got to respond to it.
