3 Reasons Why Grinding Isn't Enough
I've seen that look in the mirror. When I looked at myself after grinding and grinding and grinding, well, there's a predictable outcome to that. And it's generally not a good one. I want to share with you today three reasons why grinding to get through a particularly persistent long-term crisis is not a good idea.
First of all, is that when you grind for too long, you put yourself in a sympathetic state, you are in that fight, flight or freeze mode all the time. Your cortisol levels are jacked. Your adrenaline levels are jacked. You are taking big slugs on the devil's cocktail. Now that's great when you're at this elevated state, when you are trying to get away from a snake in the bushes, but it's not great when you are trying to overcome a cashflow problem that is going to take at least eight weeks.
The body is just not designed for that state, it never has been. The body is designed to go to an elevated sympathetic state, to fight, to flee or to freeze, and then to drop down into a parasympathetic state of calm and connect, where the body can metabolize that energy through emotion and breath, and then it reset itself.

How Do We Return to the Light?
How do we return to the light? And, by the light, I'm talking about better days. I'm talking about better ground. I'm talking about thriving instead of surviving. I'm talking about order instead of chaos coming out of this pandemic.
The first step is that you have to own your life. You have to have agency in your life. These days, it seems to me that as I look around, not a whole lot of people are owning their life. They are giving their power away. They are giving their agency away to politicians or to pop stars or culture warriors, whatever you want to call them.
We are giving our own agency away. And with that goes our personal responsibility and our self-actualization for taking that deep breath at the end of our life. I believe we have to own our life.

What Will Re-Emergence Look Like?
I’m hearing from a lot of leaders that say, "We're probably not going to fully come back to work in the traditional style. There's going to be a hybrid approach."
This is the big buzzword right now, this hybrid approach, there's been so much cost savings at an organizational level on not having to maintain these office buildings and all the travel, you better believe that organizationally there's going to be emphasis on this hybrid approach where not everybody, in fact, a lot of people don't come back to work.
It is important that we talk about what re-emergence will look like, because I don't think that the image or the picture in people's heads necessarily matches up with reality. There will be some “below-the-waterline” realities, as we say in Rooftop Leadership, that maybe you're not thinking about.
