Episode 213: Ivory Aquino on Having the Power to Rewrite Her Childhood (Celebrating Trans Day of Visibility)
On today’s episode, we are so honored to have Filipina actress Ivory Aquino grace us with her vibrant energy and help us wrap up Women’s History Month. This week also coincides with International Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31st), which celebrates the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people, while also bringing awareness to the work that is needed to achieve trans justice (GLSEN). As a trans woman, Ivory describes her childhood as “a push and pull of joy and questioning.” Born and raised in the Philippines, Ivory moved to the US to study at Berklee College of Music. An accomplished singer, dancer, and actor, Ivory is best known for portraying transgender activist Cecilia Chung in the miniseries “When We Rise” and being cast as Alysia Yeoh in DC Film’s “Batgirl.” Her powerful stories remind us why it is so important to approach the unknown with curiosity, rather than fear. Living Well with Janet: What is the Formula for Happiness?
It is probably one of the most elusive things pursued by humankind. When people ask: “what do you hope to achieve in life?” “what is your ultimate goal?” or “what is the meaning of life?” – you’ll often hear the answer: I just want to be happy. But what does that really mean? Is it a state of being? Is it the same for everyone? Is it even achievable? March 20th is the UN International Day of Happiness. The purpose of this holiday is to make people around the world realize the importance of happiness within their lives. In honor of this mission, this episode explores happiness in my own life and prompts you to think about it in yours. If you enjoyed this episode, please share your unique formula for happiness and leave a simple, classic smile emoji in the comments of our IG post! __________________________________________Host: Janet WangEditor: Victoria Cheng__________________________________________C O N N E C T W I T H U S• Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook• Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here• Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here• Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com__________________________________________S U P P O R T U S• Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com• Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support• More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 212: Finding Strength Through Sisterhood and Personal Wins
As women, we are often made to feel like our accomplishments are not worth celebrating, or that the struggles we go through are just something we have to bear with a smile. Whether intentional or not, this messaging can come from strangers, our governments, work, and even people we know. There are many days where we can be hard on ourselves, when it feels like things are not going as planned. So this Women’s History Month, we want to take a moment to celebrate the people and moments in life (big or small) that give us strength and make us feel empowered. Through the ups and downs of life, our sisters and close girlfriends uplift us and make us feel like badasses. Even if the world tells us we are “past our prime,” we take pride in our life experiences and practices that sustain us. May this episode be a tonic on a rough day. Or an energy boost on a good day! It’s a love note to our ABGs, and for ourselves, and a reminder that we have always been enough. __________________________________________Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen WuContributing Editor: Haemee KangEditor: Michelle Hsieh__________________________________________P A R T N E R S• Liquid IV: Receive 20% off your order using promo code ABG at liquid-iv.com• Lume Deodorant: New customers get $5 off a Lume Starter Pack with code ABG at LumeDeodorant.com__________________________________________C O N N E C T W I T H U S• Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook• Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here• Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here• Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com__________________________________________S U P P O R T U S• Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com• Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support• More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices.
