Play to Potential Podcast
This Podcast is created and curated by Deepak Jayaraman (an Executive Coach and a Leadership Advisor). He lives in Mumbai and works with successful Senior Executives by helping them play to their unique potential but with a sharp focus on transitions (business or career). Just like businesses need to think about "where to play" and "how to win", leaders need to be coherent about "where to go" and "how to grow" in their journeys. Deepak works with them during pivotal moments to help them with these two questions. To know more click here (https://playtopotential.com/aboutdeepak) .
The conversations in this podcast cover topics around Leadership, Transitions and Careers. Given that time is scarce and that you might be interested in only some of the segments of the podcast, the conversations have been broken down into nuggets to facilitate easier consumption. This is also a learning journey that the Podcast host Deepak Jayaraman is going through. At the end of each nugget he shares his key takeaway(s) in the context of his experiences. For accessing nuggets across speakers by a specific theme of interest, you might want to visit the Curated Playlists (https://playtopotential.com/alltags) section. If you derive value from the podcast, please consider paying it forward (https://playtopotential.com/payitforward) to Antarang Foundation.
Deepak is an alumnus of IIT Madras, IIM Ahmedabad and London Business School. Prior to Starting Transition Insight, he has been a Business Consultant at KPMG Consulting in UK/India, Strategy Consultant with McKinsey & Co. in the US and a Leadership Consultant (Executive Search, Board placements, Leadership Development) at EgonZehnder. He is a certified CEO Coach.

673: 100.01 Christopher Clarey - Signs of early potential
NUGGET CONTEXT
Chris speaks about how people were talking about Roger’s potential when he was just 13 or 14. He speaks about how Regis Brunet saw Roger in action in Florida and then immediately ran to the payphone to get hold of Roger’s parents back in Switzerland.
This is a “sampler” of what a nugget looks like in our podcast. While we have a few nuggets on popular podcast platforms, entire library of Nuggets (Categorised by themes) is available at www.playtopotential.com in the Members section. GUEST
Roger Federer is somebody who needs no introduction. While, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have overtaken him in terms of the overall Grand Slams won, when there is a discussion about the Greatest of All Time (GOAT), all fingers very often still point to Roger. One could attribute that to his fluidity, his charm on and off court, his longevity, his stable family life, and much more.
I had a unique opportunity to engage with Christopher Clarey, a veteran New York Times Correspondent who has been covering Sports at an Elite level for more than 30 years. From Bjorn Borg to Serena Williams. He has recently published the book - The Master: the Brilliant Career of Roger Federer. He gives us a behind the scenes account of Roger’s journey starting from his childhood.
We speak about how Roger handled his mental chatter, how he made choices that made him play a long innings, how he handled stress, the role of his parents in shaping his character, how his skills as a businessman are probably better than his skills on the court. We hope you enjoy the 100th episode.

669: 97.00 David Bradford on Connect - Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends and Colleagues
GUEST
David has been teaching the landmark Interpersonal Dynamics course (informally called as Touchy Feely by many) at Stanford for over 50 years. He has distilled some of his learnings and insight from these five decades in a recently published book titled – Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends and Colleagues. It is always a pleasure to speak to somebody who has spent decades honing a certain craft.
We start with discussing the six markers of an exceptional relationship, then move on to talking about the criticality of the right language, then we talk about the notion of crossing the net, something that is possibly at the root of a large part of the misunderstanding between humans. This is one of those things that is so simple and can have such a transformational impact on our lives if we can apply it consistently. We then talk about how we can build the interpersonal muscle with kids and the right kind of vulnerability that we should consider showing at our work place. This conversation could be relevant for anybody who is working with people, which practically means all of us!

668: 96.00 Ethan Kross on Chatter – The voice in our head
GUEST
Ethan is one of the world’s leading experts on controlling the conscious mind. He is an award-winning professor in the University of Michigan’s Psychology Department. His research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Science. He has recently published the book – Chatter. The book goes deep into talking about the voice in our heads and how we can harness it. Through the book he shows that instead of trying to silence your monkey mind, you can learn to educate it, motivate it, and even reason with it.
All of us have experienced what Ethan calls "Chatter". A never-ending loop of negative thoughts that engulf us and paralyse us at certain periods of time. Ethan speaks about the criticality of how we can work with these emotions and harness them without getting stuck in a vicious loop in their grip. Some of the topics that we covered include: a) The role of rituals and how Rafael Nadal uses it in a tennis match b) The fine line between inner voice and inner chatter c) How we can use techniques like Time-travel, Distancing and Experiencing Awe to deal with Chatter d)Role of Journaling in reducing Chatter e) How we should balance out listening and allowing venting and providing coaching while engaging with someone experiencing Chatter

667: 95.00 Manjari Jaruhar - The story of Bihar’s first Woman IPS officer
GUEST
Manjari Jauhar is Bihar’s first IPS officer and one of the first five IPS officer in India (Kiran Bedi being the first).
After an unexpected turn of events upended the homemaker role her parents had planned for her, Manjari Jaruhar overcame extraordinary odds to become the first woman from Bihar to join the country’s elite police cadre. Her journey is a masterclass in courage, resilience and leadership by a woman who broke new ground and thrived despite being viewed with disbelief and derision by her colleagues. She has recently authored the book - Madam Sir, which captures her journey against several odds. It is a stirring account of a sheltered girl’s rise to the top echelons of the Indian Police Service. Set against the backdrop of significant events such as the Bhagalpur blindings, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Lalu Prasad’s reign in Bihar, “Madam Sir” is an inside look into the IPS through a woman’s eyes.
In our conversation we spoke about her childhood, her challenges in her first marriage and how she picked herself up and “took charge” of her personal and professional life. We also speak about the many glass ceilings that she had to break as one of the first few Police Officers in the country.
