Do you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, with Nick Hickmott
Many of us drink to relax and socialise, but are we aware of how much we are drinking on a daily basis and what affects it may be having on our health?
During January this year, alcohol sales surged by 30%. This significant jump in sales has been linked to stress, boredom, anxiety and loneliness caused by the pandemic. When we look at our relationship with alcohol, do we consider the health implications regarding our physical and mental health? What are the health harms linked to drinking alcohol? At what point does it become a problem? The word alcoholic may not directly resonate with many people, but does that imply that you have a healthy relationship with it?
In this weeks episode I speak with Nick Hickmott, Early Intervention Lead at drug, alcohol and mental health charity, We Are With You. Nick works with young adults on a daily basis, aiming to provide young people with all the information they need to make sensible choices whilst offering a friendly ear to those who need it. In today's episode we do exactly that, opening up a conversation surrounding alcohol, how it can affect us mentally and physically, and what we can do when we starts to become problematic.

Free yourself from Imposter Syndrome with Dr. Valerie Young
Imposter syndrome is defined as doubting your own abilities and feeling like a fraud. A google search yields more than 5 million responses. Imposter syndrome has been said to people such as, Sheryl Sandberg the COO of Facebook and even first lady Michelle Obama.
What I feel seems to be less explored is why does imposter syndrome exist in the first place and what role does our surroundings and workplace play? Is it that we change and re evaluate our thought processes as individuals? Maybe. But how much is our external environment and society influencing us?
Imposter phenomenon is associated with impaired job performance, decreased satisfaction at work and burnout.
To help me explore this further, I speak to phenomenal Dr. Valerie Young. Dr Young is an internationally-known expert on imposter syndrome and author of award-winning book The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer from the Imposter Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It.

Navigating Sobriety with Millie Gooch
Opening up the conversation surrounding sobriety can feel daunting for many people. In the UK we have an ingrained drinking culture and you can feel ostracised if you don’t drink. People quickly form the opinion that you have a “problem”. Reevaluating our relationship with alcohol and becoming sober curious shouldn’t need a reason.
Alcohol is classed as a pharmacological drug and can heavily impact our mental and physical health. Deaths from alcohol reached a record high during 2020.
In today’s episode I speak to Millie Gooch, one of the female voices pioneering the sobriety movement in the UK today. In February 2018, Millie Gooch gave up alcohol after it started to take a toll of her mental health and wellbeing. Seven months later she founded the Sober Girl Society, an online and real life space for women who don’t drink booze. We cover how you can make the first move to becoming sober curious, where do you start and how you live your life to the fullest without alcohol.

How to eat sustainability with dietitian Louise Symington
How can we achieve a dietary intake which protects our health and our planet at the same time? One that is affordable and equitable?
When we look at food sustainability, we need to include protecting populations from non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, producing our food with fewer resources, such as land, water and fuel to help feed to fast growing population. And it doesn't stop there, ethical food labelling can be a minefield of who to trust and not to trust.
To help me uncover this important topic, I speak to registered dietitian Louise Symington, aka the sustainable dietitian. With over 15 years experience, Louise has advised the Green Food Project and worked in food policy and worked with Sustain to provide schools and local authorities on providing good food quality.

Why the future of our planet relies on the children of today with George Lamb
Food is complex. It doesn't just effect our health and general wellbeing, it also effects how we farm, how accessible it is to us and the affordability as well as political issues such as the recent agriculture bill. Yet, how could we help create a more sustainable and attainable food system? Will this begin with the children of today? George Lamb shares his personal story of leaving his celebrity life, after a realisation that it was no longer serving him. Growing an innate interest in how he could help shape a healthy world, his path lead him into education. Today he has created GROW. GROW works in schools and communities to promote mental well-being, physical health and a more hands-on relationship with the natural world.

Breast cancer, diet and health inequalities
With 2.5 million in the UK living with cancer, and breast cancer is the number one cancer for women, affecting 1 in 8 women in the UK. Yet, with 23% of breast cancers preventable in the UK, what could we be eating more and less of to help reduce our risk? Why is it that black women have the poorest health outcomes when it comes to breast cancer? Why are health inequalities still so prevalent in 2020? What do we need to change and how can we educate ourselves more on these health inequalities? To help me explore this further, I speak to Toral Shah, chef and nutritional scientist with a BSc in Cell Biology from UCL and an MSc in Nutritional Medicine from the University of Surrey, as well as the founder of Urban Kitchen. - Toral asked me to apologised for abbreviating her name to Tor at the end of the podcast.
