Why comparing ourselves is so detrimental: Live Episode at Be Well Summit with Kimberley Wilson
No sensible discussion about body image can start without an understanding of Social Comparison Theory (SCT). We all compare ourselves, whether it is a physical trait, psychological quality, talent on finical value to others. The SCT looks at the pattern of those comparisons and the impact this has on our wellbeing and very importantly how this can affect our body image. In this special LFW episode, I invite psychologist and author, Kimberly Wilson on stage to discuss the social comparison theory and body image. Modelling and working in fashion comes with a lot of opportunities, but the tax young people pay for that is working in an industry where absolute strangers can critique your body. All day. Every day. In this kind of environment, our natural tendency to social comparison gets dialled up, which can put stain on relationships and the risk of self-objectification is real, affecting low self-esteem. Kimberly discusses the steps to take to help re address your values and how to create an anchor for your self esteem. This episode was recorded live at the LFW, Be Well Collective Wellbeing Summit 2020. For more information follow: @sarahannmacklin | @be_well_collective www.sarahannmacklin.com

Navigating the FODMAP diet for IBS treatment with Dr Jane Muir
We spend three quarters of a billion pounds on probiotic products that promise to balance our microbiome. We sip on kombucha and pickle kimchi. The evidence stacks when we discuss the connection between our brain and gut. With two out 10 people in the UK suffering with IBS, and no cure for those who suffer with IBS, severe IBS symptoms can heavily implode on peoples lives.
In this episode I speak to Dr Jane Muir, lead dietitian at Monash university. Researchers at Monash discovered certain short chain carbohydrates could not be digested and caused aggravation for many people with IBS, naming these, FODMAPs. Although research suggests that there is not one single cause for IBS, there are a variety of treatments, including that can help improve symptoms and thus quality of life.
We discuss how a low FODMAP diet may help improve symptoms of IBS, alongside other treatments such as CBT, hypnotherapy and movement.

Stress proof yourself with Dr Mithu Storoni
Understanding how your body responds to stress can be key to managing stressful situations and reducing the impact it has on your health, but are we coping with stress? Stress seems to be one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems including anxiety and depression. It is also linked to physical health problems like heart disease, problems with our immune system, insomnia and digestive problems, but what if I told you, you could make yourself stress proof? I speak to Dr Mithu Storoni, a neuroscientists who has written a fantastic book aimed to stress proof our daily lives.

When can our relationships with food become problematic with Renee Mcgregor
We all have an emotional connection with food, and for some during lockdown this has been emphasized more than others. Disruption to many of our carefully planned routines, lack of access to social networks and increased anxiety means food has become a comfort in time of need.
Alongside the current media pressure to “transform yourself” during lockdown, these messages can amplify the internal dialogue and make the struggle with poor body image and a difficult relationship with food even harder. For many of us who rely on the gym or struggles with exercise addiction, seeing the nation’s newfound fitness craze under lockdown has also proved triggering.
To help make sense of it all is Renee Mcgregor is a leading Sports and Eating disorder specialist dietitian with 20 years’ experience working in clinical and performance nutrition.

Learning to accept ourselves with Caggie Dunlop.
It can be extremely hard to not compare ourselves to one another, yet this holds a negative impact in how we view ourselves. Changing your thoughts and beliefs because someone else either approves or disapproves, and ascribing your self-worth to the approval of others can become tiresome. It can also lead to anxiety, depression and eating disorders, among other mental health illnesses. I speak to Caggie Dunlop, who felt the pressures which fame brought, and opens up about her personal struggles. Pseudoscience and how it is harming our health with Dr Izzy Smith
Science is full of people who disagree with one another . If we all thought exactly the same way, we could retire and call the status quo truth. But when theories have no scientific backing behind them, and when people start to fear food which has no scientific evidence, we have to challenge that.
Following on from last weeks episode with Dr Izzy Smith, we help to clarify some of nutrition myths. Celery juice has been tipped to cure digestive and immune disorders, fluoride use has been linked to autism and the oral conceptive has been linked to an increase risk of breast cancer. What is the truth and the facts? Find out in today's episode.

Dairy vs Soy, which is right for you with Dr Izzy Smith
The UK is now drinking 50% less milk than they were in 1974, and almost a quarter of Britons are consuming plant-based milk alternatives as the popularity of vegan diets continues to grow. Yet there is still a lot confusion about dairy and soy milk when it comes to our health. Does soy affect our breast cancer risk? Does soy interfere with our hormones? We've heard many times dairy leaches calcium from our bones, is this true?
With so many misconceptions between soy and dairy, it's hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. In the first series of season 2, I speak to Dr Izzy Smith who is a medical doctor working in Sydney Australia, specialising in general internal medicine and endocrinology aka the study of hormone health. She is also a qualified personal trainer and ambassador for the Men’s health charity Movember and a passionate runner and athlete herself.

Live Episode: Gut Health and Diet Myths with Tim Spector
A live episode from the Be Well 2020 summit
What is the real science behind what we eat? We are all increasingly bewildered by the simple question of what to eat. Despite advice from experts, governments and dieticians about the dangers of too much fat, sugar, protein and lack of exercise, our nutrition, and the global obesity crisis, is getting worse. There is one area which scientists do agree on, and that is the importance of our gut health.
In this episode, Dr Tim Spector speaks live at Sarah Ann's Be Well Collective wellbeing event. Tim is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at Guys and St Thomas Hospital. Tm has published over 900 scientific journals, and leads the largest microbiome project in the UK, the Twin Study. Tim explains his wealth of knowledge relating to the gut microbiome, the facts behind what we eat, why people gain weight, fail to lose weight, and why allergy seems to be everywhere.
