How Does Christ Bring Division.(Matthew 10: 32-40)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHow Does Christ Bring Division.  (Matthew 10: 32-40) Introduction.Last time we learnt that God is in control and therefore we need never feel alone, and we should remember that God. He has counted the number of hairs on you head so he is in control. That is why we can put up with all the troubles of this world because we know that underneath God is in control and God cares about us. But then all of a sudden, he says in verse 32 it takes an unusual turn.“Therefore, whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.  (Matthew 10: 32-33)Heavenly Rewards.I Do Not Come To Bring Peace But a Sword.“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword”. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’, and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’  (Matthew 10: 34-36) He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. Why Put Up with the Life of a Disciple (Matthew 10: 24-31)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comWhy Put up with the life of a disciple (Matthew 10:24-31) The Life of a Disciple. You would think that serving the Lord would always be enjoyable, it is after all working for a wonderful boss who is gracious and generous, and all of that’s true. In reality having served the Lord for decades virtually all of my adult life I have found that to generally be true. However, there’s another side of serving the Lord because the work can be difficult. Serving the Lord can involve suffering as well. It’s sort of like well to use Jesus’ own analogy sending sheep out among wolves when he sent out the 12 apostles, he gave them some instruction warning them that their call to service might involves suffering. He even told them that they might suffer persecution from religious leaders, civic leaders, even family members. He told them that some would be arrested even a whipping was possible, and of course he said they would be hated by everybody. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. (Matthew 10: 24)We need to pause right away; he’s saying in this verse you are the student the and the servant and so don’t think that you’re somehow going to be above the teacher or the owner of the slave. In those days they treated the teachers the way a servant treated a master. But you should not expect any better treatment than they will give your master and leader. In the next verse he gets more specific he says in verse 25. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house ]Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!(Matthew 10: 25)Therefore, do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed and hidden that will not be known.  (Matthew 10: 26)Do Not Fear. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  (Matthew 10: 27) And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10: 28)Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.Do not fear; therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows.  (Matthew 10: 29-31).......................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon. The Lady Hewley Trust,  Hilary Tulloh, Adeline Israel, Stefanie Eichenberg, Stephen Longton, Bob Clough, Valerie Sims, Lisa Look, Robert Holloway, The Creative  Fund, John  Van Mulligen, Sergey  Kochergan,Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

The Reason the Christian Church is Persecuted. (Matthew 10: 19-23)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comThe Reason the Christian Church is Persecuted. (Matthew 10: 19-23)Recap and Introduction. We saw last time in its treatment of slaves, the Christian Church seemed to the Roman authorities a force which was disrupting their civilization and threatening the very existence of the Roman Empire by giving slaves a position which they should never have had, as Roman law saw it. There is no doubt that Christianity seriously affected certain vested interests connected with the Roman religion. This passage now, suggests another way in which the Christian believer might face opposition and it is unpacked for us, beginning at verse 19.But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak . “For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you”. (Matthew 10: 20-21))An example from the life of Moses.10 Then Moses said to the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”11 So the Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be your mouth and teach you what you shall say.” (Exodus 4: 10-12) “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. . And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.  (Matthew 10: 21-22)Let me make just a couple of points here, because he’s still saying, “don’t worry”. However, you need to notice that earlier you were going to be set before the religious leaders but then it also mentioned that you might also be delivered up to civic leaders.23 When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man  comes. The Challenge of Being a Disciple - Persecution (Matthew 10: 16-18)

Send us a textThe Challenge of Being a Disciple - Persecution. (Matthew 10: 16-18) Introduction - Dealing with Opposition. There are some timeless truths here that apply to all disciples in all ages and it’s that that I want us to see. If you’d like to know how to handle opposition to the Christian faith if you’re a disciple of Christ and you meet some of that then I invite your attention to Matthew chapter 10 and I’m gonna begin reading with verse 16 16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. 17 But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. 18 You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.  (Matthew 10: 16-18) Types of Persecutions Facing Christians. The Reason the Christian Church is Persecuted.........................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon. The Lady Hewley Trust,  Hilary Tulloh, Adeline Israel, Stefanie Eichenberg, Stephen Longton, Bob Clough, Valerie Sims, Lisa Look, Robert Holloway, The Creative  Fund, John  Van Mulligen, Sergey  Kochergan, Bobbi  Patchin, Thomas  Unitt, Colin  Evans' Martin  MPW.Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

(Matthew 10: 8b-10)THE CONDUCT OF GOD’S MESSENGERS"When you enter into any city or village, make inquiries as to who in it is worthy, and stay there until you go out of it. When you come into a household, give your greetings to it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not receive you, and will not listen to your words, when you leave that house or that city, shake off the dust of it from your feet. Our Commission as Disciples of the King. (Matthew 10: 1-8a)

Send us a textThe Commission as Disciples of the King. (Matthew 10: 1-8a)1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot , who also betrayed him. (Matthew 10 1: 1-4)We are 10 chapters into this gospel account and Matthew has been unfolding his story of Jesus step by step. Following the advent story, Matthew told us about the baptism of Jesus. In that account Matthew shows us Jesus accepting the task that God had commissioned him to do. Then in the account of the Temptation in the wilderness  Matthew shows us Jesus deciding on the methods he will use to embark upon his task. In the Sermon on the Mount, we listen to Jesus' words of wisdom and extensive teaching on how we might be right with God. In Matthew 8 and the opening part of chapter 9 we have now seen Jesus' miraculous works of power. Then in the close of chapter 9 we saw the growing opposition gathering itself against Jesus and his ministry. Now here at the beginning of chapter 10 we see Jesus choosing his followers and disciples. If a leader is about to embark upon any great undertaking, the first thing that he must do is to choose his followers. There are two facts about these men which are bound to strike us immediately.(i) They were ordinary men. (ii) They were the most extraordinary mixture of people. When we put together the three accounts of the calling of the Twelve certain illuminating facts emerge.(i) He chose them. (ii) He called them. (iii) He appointed them.(iv) They were chosen to be with him.(v) They were called to be apostles. The 1st Commissioning of the Disciples. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons (Matthew 10: 5-8a)The Commission to Obey the Will of GodFirstly, they were to heal the sick. Secondly, they were to raise the dead. ss deep within us which our sinning has oppressed.Thirdly they were to cleanse the lepers. Finally, they were to Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

The Mute Shall Speak. (Matthew 9: 32-38)

Send us a textThe Mute Shall Speak. (Matthew 9: 32-38)A Mute Man Speaks32 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marvelled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.”  (Matthew 9: 32-34)This short little story of a man who is demon possessed and is unable to speak, most Bible commentators suggest that the mutism was a result of demon possession in this case. That was the lived experience of this man and the family and community around him as it tells us it was the community around him that brought him to Jesus and Jesus casts out the demon but look at the reaction of the crowd. Instead of rejoicing they say he has done this by the power of the ruler of demons, meaning Satan himself. Instead of saying wow he’s the Messiah, look at what he has done. Rather than bow the knee to the Messiah, they accuse him of being an agent of Satan. The Compassion of Jesus35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9: 35-38)This little is the second subsection of Matthew deals with Jesus going about practicing his ministry which consisted of preaching and teaching. We’re told in verse that “he looked at the crowd and he was moved to compassion”.  It was not just their physical needs but their spiritual condition, their lack of nurture and guidance and protection that he is concerned about. Their so-called spiritual leaders have not been properly taking care of them and that leads Jesus to feel compassion for them.s, teachers, preachers and evangelists. Our Call as Disciples. In the next passage in Ch 10 verse 1 we will begin to see Jesus sending his 12 disciples out. Sending them out to do the work of the harvest. He called his first 12 disciples, and he sends them out. So today if you consider yourself a disciple of Jesus Christ well let me tell you it is because of someone else going out and labouring in the field on your behalf at some point. ........................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon. The Lady Hewley Trust,  Hilary Tulloh, Adeline Israel, Stefanie Eichenberg, Stephen Longton, Bob Clough, Valerie Sims, Lisa Look, Robert HSupport the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

Miracles that Demonstrate The Perfect Messiahship of Jesus (Matthew 9: 18-31)

Send us a textMiracles that Demonstrate The Perfect Messiahship of Jesus. (Matthew 9: 18-31)IntroductionHow do we know that Jesus is the Messiah. From a biblical point of view the answer to that is found most clearly in one book of the Bible than in all others. No other book of the scripture that attempts to demonstrate that he is from Messiah then the book of Matthew.A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed18 While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples.20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her, He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.  19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples. 20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. When they came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.  (Matthew 9: 9-26).Two Blind Men Healed.27 When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” 28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows it.” 31 But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country. More Lesson about Discipleship. (Matthew 9:11- 17)

Send us a textMore Lesson about Discipleship. (Matthew 9: 11- 17) Reactions to Jesus Eating With “Sinners”.We have arrived at the point where Matthew (who was a tax collector) has decided to accept the call of Jesus on his life and follow him. Because Matthew was a tax collector, so this meant for him leaving his old life behind. But things don’t go as planned because the pharisee’s become aware of what is going on.  9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So, he arose and followed Him. 10 Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice [a quotation from Hosea chapter 6, by the way].’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners,]to repentance.”   (Matthew 9: 9-13)Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting.14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.  (Matthew 9:149-15)New Wine16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” (Matthew 9: 16-17)Summary........................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon.
