The Sign of Jonah. ( Matthew 12: 38-45

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comThe Sign of Jonah, Further Proof. ( Matthew 12:38-45) Introduction.Over the years as I have talked to people about the Lord, I have people say to me on occasion, I want proof. When I hear that my usual response is to talk to about prophecy, about how the OT made lots of prediction about the Messiah and how Jesus Christ fulfilled those prophecies. That had a reasonable amount of success probably about up to around 20 years ago when most people had some degree of biblical literacy, but now days a great many people know nothing about the Bible and so they often now say, I want more proof than that. So what should we do when that happens? Do you think there is a right answer that will persuade most of the people most of the times, or maybe just some of the people some of the time. Well, that very thing happened to Jesus himself and let me show you what Jesus said.38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here(Matthew 12: 38-41)I. The Unpardonable Sin (Matthew 12: 31-37)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comThe Unpardonable Sin (Matthew 12: 31-37)I. Introduction. After all Jesus has said so far about inner righteousness and unconditional salvation it is surprising to find him talk about an unforgivable spoken by Jesus the Saviour of all people. 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. 33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(Matthew 12: 31-33)II. The Old Testament View of the Holy Spirit.III Hearts And Words.34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(Matthew 12:34-37).......................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon. The Lady Hewley Trust,  Hilary Tulloh, Adeline Israel, Stefanie Eichenberg, Stephen Longton, Bob Clough, Valerie Sims, Lisa Look, Robert Holloway, The Creative  Fund, John  Van Mulligen, Sergey  Kochergan, Bobbi  Patchin, Thomas  Unitt, Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

Satan's Defences Are Breached (Matthew 12: 22-30)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comSatan's Defences Are Breached (Matthew 12:22-30)It is important to understand that in the 1st century eastern world it was not only mental and psychological illness which was ascribed to the influence of demons and devils; all illness was attributed to these malignant powers. Exorcism was very commonly practised; and was in many cases records show was seen to be effective. There is nothing in that to be surprised at. I personally believe, even today, that sometimes physical illness can issue can still be entirely spiritual in nature, even amongst ourselves today anyone can stress themselves into having a headache, or can convince themselves that they have symptoms of an illness which then can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When a person under such a belief is confronted with an exorcist in whom they had confidence, often the sickness can be dispelled, and a cure is the result. In such cases if a person who is convinced they was cured, they are cured in deed. But what about Jesus, what did he do when there were demonic forces at play, how did Jesus deal with them, and was it any different that the practice of the Jewish exorcist his day. Let’s pick up the text in verse 22.22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.  (Matthew 12: 22-29)In this instance Jesus is seen to cure a man who was blind, deaf and dumb and whose infirmity was attributed to demon-possession, and he heals him. The people were amazed. They began to wonder if this Jesus could be the Son of David, the long promised and long expected great Saviour and liberator. Any doubt or questions they had was due to the fact that Jesus was so unlike the picture of the Son of David in which they had been brought up to believe. /Here was no glorious prince with pomp and circumstance; there was no great warrior here rattling his swords and he had no conquering army with him. Jesus Handles Further Opposition (Matthew 12 9-21)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comJesus Handles Further Opposition (Matthew 12: 9-21)Introduction – Jesus Moves on.We continue where we left off last time by looking at how Jesus deals with the rising opposition against him by looking at how he compares, and contrasts Love and the Law.9 He left there and went into their synagogue. And look you, there was a man there with a withered hand. So, they asked him, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath?" They asked this question in order that they might find an accusation against him. "What man will there be of you," he said, "who will have a sheep, and, if the sheep falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, will not take a grip of it, and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep? So, then, it is permitted to do a good thing on the Sabbath day." Then he said to the man, "Stretch forth your hand!" He stretched it out, and it was restored, sound as the other. So, the Pharisees went away and conferred against him, to find a way to destroy him.  (Matthew 12: 9-14)The Challenge Accepted. The Characteristics of The Servant Of The Lord.15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory. 2In his name the nations will put their hope.”  (Matthew 12: 18-21) .......................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon.

A Crisis Looms (Matthew 12:1-8)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comCrisis Looms (Matthew 12:1-8)Introduction – Crisis LoomsIn Matthew chapter 12 we read about the beginning of a series of crucial events in the life of Jesus. In everyone’s life there are decisive moments, times and events on which the whole of his life can turn. This chapter presents us with the story as it reaches a pivotal point in the life of Jesus. In it we see the Jewish religious leaders of Jesus’ day coming to their final decision regarding Jesus and what he has said and done, and that was to reject him and his claim of Messiahship. It was not only rejection in the sense that they would have nothing to do with him; it was rejection in the sense that they came to the conclusion in such a way than it was likely that nothing less than his complete elimination would be the proper way to deal with Him. Here in this chapter, we see the first steps, the end of which could be nothing other than the Cross. Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”  (Matthew 12: 1-8)Three Responses to Unjust Accusations.Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

The Hidden Truth of God (Matthew 11: 16-30)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comGod Hides The Truth (Matthew 11:16-30) The Honeymoon Is Over. 16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:17 “‘We played the pipe for you,     and you did not dance; we sang a dirge,     and you did not mourn.’18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”  (Matthew 11: 16-19) Woe on Unrepentant Towns20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”  (Matthew 11: 20-24)The Father Revealed in the Son25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(Matthew 11: 25-27)The wise men rejected him, and the simple people accepted him. The intellectuals had no use for him; but the humble welcomed him. He is not condemning intellectual power; what he is condemning is intellectual prideThe Rabbis themselves saw the danger of this intellectual pride; they recognized that often simple people were nearer God than the wisest Rabbi. This passage closes with the greatest claim that Jesus ever made, the claim which is the centre of the Christian faith, that he alone can reveal God to men Jesus Christ alone we see what God is like; and it is also the Christian conviction that Jesus can give that knowledge to anyone who is humble enough and trustful enough to receive it.28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give youSupport the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

How To Deal with Doubts (Matthew 11: 2-6)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHow To Deal with Doubts (Matthew 11:2-6) IntroductionHave you ever doubted your faith. Unbelievers throw all kinds of challenges at Christianity and Christians, they question it, they attack it but that’s not what I’m talking about. Have you ever doubted the Christian faith, as a believer have you ever questioned if Jesus Christ really the son of God is, or that he is the Messiah of the Old Testament as presented in the New Testament. Maybe you think that kind of thing that only happens to young Christians or those who haven’t been brought up in a Christian family. They might have a temptation to doubt that truthfulness of Christianity but could that happen to somebody who is a seasoned mature servant of Jesus Christ. Can an older Christian all of a sudden begin to doubt the truthfulness of Christianity. The startling answer to that question is yes. As a matter of fact, once in the life of Christ there is an incident where Jesus said one of the greatest prophets who ever lived doubted that Jesus was the Messiah. Let’s see how did Jesus handle that and how should we handle it in our own lives and in the life of someone else who may bring that question up.2 And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”7 As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? How to Get a Prophets Reward Part 2 (Matthew 10: 40 - 11 1)

Send us a textHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.comHow to Get a Prophets Reward – Part 2 (Matthew 10:40-43)The whole closing part of this chapter is about Jesus putting together his final advise following the commissioning of these 12 men as his disciples and sending them out in his name with the message of Gods Messiah initially to the nation of Israel. Concluding by saying there going to be some who will not receive it and fact will oppose and persecute you. But also there are going to be some who are going to receive both the message but also that they will receive you as Gods ambassador meaning they’re going to help and support you. An additional point Jesus them made was to say that anyone who receives this message will receive the same reward that the deliver of that message will receive, be they prophet, evangelist, or preacher. receive. I believe means that we can receive what is called a “prophet’s reward” without being a prophet ourselves.“Whoever receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man receives a righteous means reward”(Matthew 10: 41b)Supporting those in Ministry. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”(Matthew 10: 42)Conclusion and Illustration........................................................................................The Bible Project Podcast (Daily - Monday-Friday)https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com.This podcast was brought to you by the generosity of my backers on Patreon. The Lady Hewley Trust,  Hilary Tulloh, Adeline Israel, Stefanie Eichenberg, Stephen Longton, Bob Clough, Valerie Sims, Lisa Look, Robert Holloway, The Creative  Fund, John  Van Mulligen, Sergey  Kochergan, Bobbi  Patchin, Thomas  Unitt, Colin  Evans' Martin  MPW.Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com
