Much has been written about "Decision To Leave's" direction by Park Chan-wook, but a lot of what makes his work stand out is the collaboration with cinematographer Kim Ji-yong. Some of the year's most vivid compositions and haunting images have come from South Korea's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film this year. "Living" has had one of the most extended lives of any film this awards season, premiering all the way back at Sundance and then going on to also screen at Venice, Telluride and TIFF before opening in limited release a few days ago from Sony Pictures Classics. A remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic film "Ikiru," the film stars Bill Nighy in a rare showcase leading role for the respected British actor, which has generated Oscar buzz for his performance and Nobel Prize-winning writer Kazuo Ishiguro's screenplay. World-renowned director Hirokazu Kore-eda's ("Shoplifters") latest film "Broker" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where actor Song Hang-ho ("Parasite") won the festival's Best Actor prize. The South Korean film was later picked up by NEON and is now playing in New York and will be opening in Los Angeles on December 28th. "Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths" had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it initially had a nearly three-hour runtime. The film was re-edited after its Telluride screening and received a critical bump from the initial negative reviews, and is now available to stream on Netflix. Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Like the 2019 original film that came before it, the latest Benoit Blanc murder mystery from director/writer Rian Johnson, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it tore the roof off the building, providing audiences with another clever, entertaining and bitingly relevant whodunnit. The film had a one-week limited run in theaters over Thanksgiving and is now available to stream on Netflix. Johnson was kind enough to spend some time talking with Will Mavity about his latest film, while I had the pleasure of speaking with the film's star, Janelle Monáe. Both have been nominated for Critics Choice Awards for their work, and the film is up for your consideration for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. "Matilda The Musical" had its world premiere at the London Film Festival and is now coming to Netflix on December 25th. Based on the 2011 stage musical of the same name, which is based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl (which was turned into the popular 1996 film by Danny DeVito), the film has drawn a positive response for its musical numbers, performances from breakout star Alisha Weir, Emma Thompson and Lashana Lynch and adaptation from the screen to the stage.
