Episode #380: Rising From the Startup Ashes with Michael Fox

Michael Fox is an entrepreneur and investor, best known for co-founding Shoes of Prey, the online retail startup that raised US$25M and grew its team to 200 people, before lagging demand forced the company to famously call it a day in 2019. Today, he heads up plant-based meat alternative company, Fable Foods Co. Michael joined me to unpack the Shoes of Prey journey, the highs, the lows, the lessons learned and on being a proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes. We touched on so many big ticket items, but three that stood out for me were: 1 - how so-called market validation can lead startups astray if it is not performed carefully 2 - why raising venture capital isn’t always necessary for startup success and can sometimes come at a detriment to it 3 - how Michael consciously uncoupled from his wife Jodie but continued to work together as co-founders at Shoes of Prey for another 7 years We unpacked this and a ton more, so strap yourself in for an enlightening conversation with the one and only, Michael Fox. Topics Discussed: Michael’s early years as a lawyer and why and how he got out The early days of Shoes of Prey Organic growth v venture-backed growth Market research and validation - how it can set you astray Conscious customer feedback v unconscious reality What Michael would do differently next time Ethical manufacturing Media backlash Laying staff off empathetically Ethical manufacturing The cost of employee engagement and retention Being transparent without compromising employee motivation The importance of not deriving your entire self worth from one thing Conscious uncoupling Humility and ego amidst turmoil Why it can be darkest before the dawn Why 2019 was Michael’s best year Fable Food Co and its mission of ending industrial agriculture   Show Notes: Twitter: @mmmichaelfox Fable Foods: fablefood.co IG: @fablefoodco ---------- Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts  goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski Steve's book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ Watch on YouTube: https://bit.ly/2N77FLx GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack   Hosted on Acast. Episode #379: Caring for Seniors During the Pandemic

Paul McIntyre is the host of ABC Radio’s ‘Medical Matters’ and has more than two decades of experience at ABC Radio. He is also a playwright and author. His book, Use It or Lose It, is a guide to remaining vital through mid-life and beyond. While this conversation represents a slight departure from the usual fare on Future Squared, I figured it would bring a lot of value to listeners when it comes to both living a long and healthy life yourself, as well as caring for any seniors in your life who you may not be able to physically be with during this time of COVID-19. We unpacked many topics from the book, including: Why body and mind is a false dichotomy What to eat for a ripe old age Exercise and mobility The connection between sleep, anxiety and neurodegenerative disease Community and the value of a flourishing social life Maintaining meaning after retirement The importance of learning Activities seniors can perform to ward off dementia How we can engage seniors and look after them during COVID-19   Show Notes: Get the book: https://www.amazon.com.au/Use-Lose-Paul-McIntyre-ebook/dp/B07P18SDD4 Twitter: @pauldavidmc ---------- Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts  goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski Steve's book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ Watch on YouTube: https://bit.ly/2N77FLx GET COACHED BY LUCAS: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/coaching GET LUCAS TO DESIGN YOUR SUPPLEMENT PROTOCOL: https://www.ergogenic.health/product/custom-stack   Hosted on Acast. Episode #378: Steve Blank talks Virus Survival Strategies for Business

Steve Blank - considered by many to be the father of modern entrepreneurship - returns to Future Squared to talk COVID19 virus survival strategies for business. Steve is credited with spearheading the customer development movement, which was popularised by his former pupil’s Eric Ries book, under the guise of the lean startup. We discussed the specific steps that startup CEOs, and to an extent leaders at large organisations too, should be taking in order to not just survive COVID19, but with some luck, come out the other side stronger. Specifically, we talked: Startup runway, and why it’s no time to move slowly if yours is short Whether COVID19 is a 3 month, 1 year or 3 year problem Whether you need a new business model and operating plan New opportunities presented by COVID19 Managing board and investor expectations Compassionate leadership and more… So with that, it is with much pleasure that I welcome back to the show, the one and only, Steve Blank. Episode #377: Boosting Your Immunity with Lucas Aoun

Today I welcome back to the show biohacker, naturopath and human guinea pig, Lucas Aoun, who you might remember from episode 342. Today, Lucas’ purpose and mission is to assist and empower people to reach their fullest potential, which he does through his company, Ergogenic Health. Given the rapidly evolving and uncertain times we find ourselves in, I invited Lucas back onto the show to talk about the kinds of things we can be doing to boost our immune system. This is not to say that doing anything discussed in this show will prevent you from contracting COVID19 or will help you to recover quickly should you contract it, but that they are a number of precautionary measures that you could be taking, not just for COVID19, but to live a healthy and optimised life in general. We touched on various immune boosters, such as: Sleep Nutrition Supplements; and Movement So with that, strap yourself in for an immunity boosting conversation with Lucas Aoun. Episode #376: How to Avoid Going Crazy During COVID-19 Lockdown

Many of us the world over now find ourselves in isolation, either forced to shelter in place as is the case in large parts of California, or practice social distancing and effectively spend more time at home. While Counterstrike gamers and Netflix bingers might’ve been unknowingly in training for this moment their entire lives, for most of us — even the introverts among us — this period might test our emotional fortitude, all the more so because there is uncertainty around when this experiment in social isolation will end. According to The Depression Project, isolation has the capacity to and is already triggering a number of mental health issues as a result of: decreased financial security social withdrawal and loneliness fear the health of our loved ones anxiety over catching COVID19 a survival mindset less distractions lack of control and feelings of hopelessness It’s no wonder that solitary confinement is used as a form of punishment at many prisons — one that has been found to cause anguish, provoke serious mental and physical health problems, and work against rehabilitation. In this episode, I unpack what you can be doing to come out the other side a strong, better version of yourself. Episode #375: 23 Steps to Surviving COVID19 for Startups and Small Business

Successfully building a company is a Herculean feat at the best of times — 95% of startups fail and most small businesses close their doors before they turn five. With that in mind, it might seem near impossible to do so when there’s a global pandemic shutting down the world’s economy. Nobody knows for sure when we will emerge out of this black hole and markets will resume normal programming — estimates ranging from several months to several years. What we do know is that unlike the global financial crisis of 2008 which pointed to internal problems in our financial markets, COVID-19 represents an external event, and so it stands to reason that we should expect a rapid recovery once the crisis subsides — or at least we hope so. Based on this, if your company has less than 24 months runway left, it’s time to calmly delineate between what you can control and what you can’t, and focus on the former. As such, I’ve taken the time to prepare the following 23 steps — many of which are applicable to both startups and small businesses — to increase liquidity, decrease burn rate, increase runway and ultimately increase thee chances of surviving the so-called apocalypse. Episode #374: COVID-19 and How to Crush Working From Home

COVID-19 has had a deleterious effect on our world as we know it. First, it sent sharemarkets into a downward spiral, then it put countries such as Italy into lockdown, and forced the cancelation of festivals such as SXSW(something the author of this article was going to attend — bummer!). Oh, and who can forget ‘toiletgate’ — Australians, embarrassingly for me, stripping grocery stores bare of necessities such as toilet paper, hand sanitiser, pasta, rice and Vegemite. I have since warmed to the southern European institution that is the bidet! Episode #372: Seth Godin on Navigating Business and Life

Seth Godin needs no introduction but I am going to give him one anyway. He is the author of 19 books, and over 8,000 blog posts. He’s a pre-eminent name in the world of entrepreneurship and marketing. He has founded several companies including altMBA, The Marketing Seminar, Squidoo, and YoYoDyne which he sold to Yahoo! For US$30M. In 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame. With such an enormous body of work, it was hard to know where to start preparing for this interview, but I spent our 45 minutes together trying to shine a light on apparently conflicting beliefs. How do we strive for more, while also accepting who we are? Does having a Plan B mean that we don’t go all in on Plan A? Does hiring for culture fit mean that we destroy creativity? We explored questions like these that transcend both life and business, so strap yourself in for some rapid-fire learning with the one, the only, Seth Godin. Topics Discussed: Striving for more versus acceptance of self Having a Plan B versus going all in on Plan A Navigating uncertainty Overcoming rejection and adversity Build an MVP or build something remarkable? How to identify your smallest viable market How to save time for rewarding pursuits Persist or quit in the face of negative feedback? Hire for culture fit or diversity of thought? Does setting up shop in Silicon Valley kill creativity? Why Netflix and Apple don’t make good benchmarks for early-stage entrepreneurs Kevin Kelly’s 1,000 true fans The K12 school system and what’s broken with education Signaling: good signal v bad signal?
