Episode #211: The Rise of Tech Addiction with Adam Alter
Welcome to Future Squared for episode #211, our first guest interview of the year. I’m absolutely psyched to be bringing you Adam Alter. Adam is an Associate Professor of Marketing and Psychology at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and the author of Drunk Tank Pink, a New York Times bestseller about the forces that shape how we think, feel, and behave, and Irresistible, a book about the rise of tech addiction and what we should do about it. Alter was recently included in the Poets and Quants “40 Most Outstanding Business School Professors under 40 in the World,” and has written for the New York Times, New Yorker, Wired, Washington Post, and The Atlantic, among other publications. He has shared his ideas at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity and with dozens of companies around the world. Alter received his Bachelor of Science with Honors in Psychology from the University of New South Wales and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Princeton University, where he held the Charlotte Elizabeth Procter Honorific Dissertation Fellowship and a Fellowship in the Woodrow Wilson Society of Scholars. Episode #206: How to make Better Decisions
Every day we’re tasked with making decisions. Most of the time, these decisions are small (like deciding whether or not to floss today). However, small things done consistently poorly versus consistently well over the long-term can have a devastating impact on where you end up, whether in business or in life. It’s kind of like the power of compound interest. I’m no dentist but it’s pretty common knowledge that if you decide not to floss every single day then you’re staring down the barrel of bleeding gums, halitosis, premature tooth loss and yellow teeth, not to mention the link made between flossing and cancer prevention. Similarly, within the context of the office, if I decide to check my email every 10 minutes it might seem like no big deal. “It only takes a second!” you insist. But if checking my email, every 10 minutes, every single day, means that I’m constantly distracted by responding to other people’s demands on my time, and I never give my brain the space to get into ‘the zone’ and engage in what author Cal Newport calls deep work - which is where most worthwhile work is done - then over the long-term I’m unlikely to move the needle on any significant commercial or creative pursuits. For more on getting into and staying in the zone, check out How To Increase Your Productivity by 500% Yet, how often do we really think through our decisions as opposed to base them on how we’re feeling in that precise moment, by past experiences, by jumping to conclusions, through groupthink, by choosing whatever decision requires the least thinking or falling victim to one of the other 32 cognitive biases that plague our decision making. In this episode of Fast Fix Friday, I'll provide one way we go about making decisions at Collective Campus, which admittedly, works best when working in a team of at least three trustworthy, radically honest people who have enough experience in said areas to facilitate a constructive process. That’s not to say you can’t use it when making your own decisions. I do all the time (as somebody who suffers from FOMO, has a tendency to chase furry rabbits and struggles with the plethora of choices on a Mexican restaurant menu, I have no choice but to use this method), and it’s a better approach than how I’ve made the majority of decisions in my 34 years on this planet. I’m not suggesting it’s perfect but I’d go as far as saying that it’s better than the way more than 99% of decisions are made based as it aims to mitigate many of those limitations of the mind and of the environment I outlined earlier. Episode #205: Tim O’Reilly on What’s The Future (WTF?)
Tim O’Reilly popularised the terms Open Source and Web 2.0 He is the founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media which delivers online learning, publishes books, runs conferences, urges companies to create more value than they capture, and tries to change the world by spreading and amplifying the knowledge of innovators.Tim has a history of convening conversations that reshape the computer industry. In 1998, he organized the meeting where the term “open source software” was agreed on, and helped the business world understand its importance. In 2004, with the Web 2.0 Summit, he defined how “Web 2.0” represented not only the resurgence of the web after the dot com bust, but a new model for the computer industry, based on big data, collective intelligence, and the internet as a platform. In 2009, with his “Gov 2.0 Summit,” he framed a conversation about the modernization of government technology that has shaped policy and spawned initiatives at the Federal, State, and local level, and around the world. He has now turned his attention to implications of AI, the on-demand economy, and other technologies that are transforming the nature of work and the future shape of the business world. Episode #204: 5 Ways Investment Can Kill Innovation
Collective Campus in its third year now and in that time I’m proud to say that, unlike other consultancies and education providers that have come (and gone already in many cases), we didn’t start out with fundraising as a key priority. It still isn’t. We started by focusing on finding our value proposition and delivering on it in a cashflow positive way. Over the course of the first 18 months we built a seven figure business, then with what was just a team of four (soon to be a team of nine), but the purpose of this blog is not to chest-beat, it is to paint a picture and deliver some important lessons. By not tapping into funding early, we were operating under conditions of serious constraint. Both my co-founder Sean and I didn’t pay ourselves anything in the first 12 months of operating, opting instead for side gigs and part time shows to keep the lights on - literally - and we had to be creative with hiring, incentivisation and marketing - opting for free third party platforms and quid pro quo arrangements where possible. Most of all, we ran countless short and fast experiments across our entire business model - and still do to this very day - across product, service, customer segment, distribution channel, price point, marketing channel, target geography, sales strategy, messaging and so on, in order to land on a model that delivered value to customers and therefore also created monetisable value for us. But because we hadn’t taken on external funding, we had the freedom to try different things and fundamentally decide one day to change the direction of the company entirely by ditching public facing workshops and instead focusing on corporate consulting, training and accelerator programs. There are significant lessons in this not only for startups but also for corporate innovation teams who often seek out funding, way beyond what is necessary - often through business cases - to build and test ideas, when far less would not only suffice but would be far more likely to get people thinking and acting like resource constrained early stage entrepreneurs, and therefore result in a more diligent application of those dollars and a higher likelihood of finding product market fit for new ideas. This isn’t to say that you can’t do that if you take on funding early, but oftentimes, taking on especially large amounts of funding early on can be a curse dressed up as a blessing.
