People who are just more just metabolically healthier are going to have healthier stem cells. The sicker you are, the sicker your stem cells are.  Stem cells send out signals. As you age, your stem cells won’t be able to send out as many signals.  Chronic inflammation will also exhaust stem cells. Three major factors contribute to chronic inflammation: Stress Lack of exercise Smoking   [03:45] What Is Happening To Our Skin As We Age Damage from the sun is going to cause spots on the skin. Some spots are also hormonal things like melasma, which you can get from hormonal changes.  The number one thing you could do for your skin is actually to protect it from the sun. Getting burnt is not good for your skin.  Regular sun exposure will cause DNA damage to the skin. Plus, it can contribute to faster aging.  Dr. Killen says to put sunscreen on your face.    [07:50] Getting A Healthy Balance of Autophagy and mTOR Through Fasting Even with a few hours of fasting, you can start to see increased stem cell production.  With longer fasts, you will have more effects systemically on stem cells.  With fasting, we see an increase in autophagy and cellular cleanup.  The best part of fasting is that it’s free!   [12:15] Exercise For Anti-Aging: How Often and How Intense Should Your Workouts Be?  You need at least three or four days of heavy lifting.  Weights are really important for creating hormones like testosterone and growth hormones.  Heavy lifting exercises should be at least thirty minutes to an hour.  Plus, you should do thirty minutes of aerobic activity a day.   [13:20] Antiseptic Mouthwash Is Bad For You: Dr. Killen Explains The Problem Antiseptic mouthwash kills the bacteria in the mouth.  When there are no bacteria in your mouth, it prevents you from making nitric oxide from food.  Nitric oxide is essential for sexual health and erections. If you’re using antiseptic mouthwash and you’re taking an antacid, it can decrease your sexual function.    [19:00] The Role That High Glucose Levels Can Play on Your Sexual Function  Glucose will create inflammation. You want to have good blood flow to your sexual organs. If you have chronic inflammation, then you will have a lack of blood flow going to your genitalia.  Hormones like testosterone will also be affected by high sugar levels.    [23:35] Peptides: Enhancing The Body's Ability To Protect and Repair Itself Peptide is just a fancy name for a short protein. Dr Michael Goran | Hidden Dangers of Sugar Putting Your Health at Risk KKP: 335

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Michael Goran. He is a Professor of Pediatrics at The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, which is affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.  He is Program Director for Diabetes and Obesity at The Saban Research Institute and he holds the Dr Robert C and Veronica Atkins Endowed Chair in Childhood Obesity and Diabetes. Dr Goran is a native of Glasgow, Scotland, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK (1986) and has previously served on the faculty of Medicine at the University of Vermont (1991 to 1994), the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB (1994 to 1999), and the Department of Preventive Medicine at USC (1999 to 2018) prior to joining Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and other Foundations for the past 30 years and he has published over 350 professional peer-reviewed articles and reviews. He is the Editor of the “Childhood Obesity: Causes, Consequences and Intervention Approaches” published in 2017, co-editor of “Dietary Sugars and Health”published in late 2014, and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for Pediatric Obesity. He has been the recipient of a number of scientific awards for his research and teaching, including: The Nutrition Society Medal for Research (1996), The Lilly Award for Scientific Achievement from The Obesity Society (2006), The Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research, from The Obesity Society (2009), the TOPS award for contributions to obesity research from The Obesity Society (2014), and the Rank Prize Lecture in Nutrition (2018). Michael lives in Silverlake, Los Angeles with his wife Lori, a film editor, his 2 teenage daughters, and their cat, Hugo Moon. Outside of work, Michael likes to play tennis, and hang out with his family which typically involves cooking, eating, going on walks and travel. Michael wanted to learn about chronic diseases and how they started in childhood.  At the end of the day, he found a lot of very interesting information about sugar and how to modify it. Michael wanted to get that information out there to the public. If someone is diabetic, that didn’t happen over the past year. It’s supposed to help them seek out good-tasting foods.  Food companies know that babies and kids prefer sweetness. So that's why 80% of kids’ foods have some type of added sugars.  Breast milk does have carbohydrates. Lactose is built from glucose and galactose. However, there's no fructose in natural mother's milk.  It's the introduction of fructose that starts to cause problems as well as added sugar.    [07:50] When Moms Should Start To Wean The Baby Off of Breast Milk  The recommendation is six months. However, there are studies that demonstrate the longer the duration of breastfeeding, the more likely you are to prevent obesity.  Plus, the longer you breastfeed, you will promote brain development. If a mom breastfeeds for more than twelve months, those babies are highly protected from obesity, even if they consume high amounts of sugary beverages as a toddler.   [10:55] A Calorie Isn’t Always A Calorie: 90% of Fructose Is Cleared By The Liver Sucrose, which is ordinary table sugar, is what we call a disaccharide. It's a glucose molecule connected to a fructose molecule; both are identical chemically. Glucose is used everywhere in the body for energy. The liver filters out almost 90% of fructose. The liver's job is to filter things out that it doesn't want in the blood. The liver will take fructose and convert it to fat. The most common form of liver disease is nonalcoholic, and that nonalcoholic contributor is fructose.   [18:10] Recommendations For Adults and Children Who Have Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Sugar elimination can rapidly deplete the liver of its fat quite quickly. It only takes seven to eight days.  That’s why Michael has a seven-day no added sugar challenge. It’s a great way to get fat out of the liver. Kids need to reset their bodies and taste preferences.  Weight loss is also important for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.  We get so amped up on sugar, we begin to crave it more and more. Cut it out!   [21:00] There Are Over 200 Names For Caloric Sugars  The current count is about 260 or 270.  Food companies are developing healthy-sounding names for sugar. Here are some examples: Organic brown rice syrup  Evaporated cane juice Agave nectar  Fruit juice concentrates  Some of the fruit sugars can have even more fructose and high fructose corn syrup. Gatorade is a fake healthy drink.    [23:40] What’s Happening To Children When They Consume Less Sugar Kids are more intelligent if they eat less sugar. With less sugar, kids can expect to have these benefits: Perform better on academic tests Better memory Better sleep More focus   [32:15] How Much Fructose Is Really In Coca-Cola? Michael Did The Research  Michael wanted to know what was in Coca-Cola.  Products say high fructose corn syrup; we don't actually know what that is. The food industry says it's marginally more fructose than glucose in their products.   Michael went to the supermarket and got all kinds of drinks. He sent them off to the lab. About 65% of the sugars are fructose.  Michael presented this information six years ago. The food industry told him that his research was invalid. However, they couldn’t prove how.  Remember, more fructose causes a lot of problems in the body.    [35:25] True or False: It’s Impossible To Be Addicted To Sugar  Here are some of the criteria for addiction: Withdrawal  Side effects Difficult to give up If you look at the criteria for addiction, they stand true for sugar.  It makes no sense that qualified professional dietitians would say that sugar is not addictive.  About 40% of the Academy of Dietetics and Nutrition funding comes from big food companies.   [45:15] What’s Next For Michael In 2022 Michael is wondering why certain populations have the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver. He wants to come up with Latino-specific strategies, protocols, and interventions. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pittsburgh and earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Life University's College of Chiropractic in Marietta, Georgia, where he graduated second in his class of 150. However, it’s not! When you learn this principle, it will change the way you think forever about stress. Ultimately, hormesis is about how we apply stressors and actually change the functionality of our bodies. There's something called the hormetic zone when you nail it, and you can drive healing in the body. All these positive things come out of hormesis; it will change the way you think about everything.  Hormesis refers to adaptive responses of biological systems to moderate environmental or self-imposed challenges through which the system improves its functionality and tolerance to more severe challenges.    [06:55] How Hormetics Increase Homeodynamics Through Exercise Aging, senescence, and death are the final manifestations of the failure of homeodynamics.  When you don’t adapt, then you bring on death much faster in the form of senescence cells.  Molecular, cellular, and physiological pathways of repair.  If we nail this principle, then we live longer and healthier.  Exercise is the best way to increase homeodynamics.  We need stress to become better.    [11:25] How Do I Know My Hormetic Zone When It Comes To Exercise?  If you haven’t exercised in a while, then you’ll be sore the next day. That means you went over the hormetic zone.  You can either exercise too little, or you can stress your body too much.  People want to exercise when they're sick; however, your body’s ability to adapt to stress is very low during sickness.  If you feel tired the next day, then you are doing too much exercise.  You need to get your body to adapt to higher levels of stress.    [16:40] Examples of Physical Hormetins That Will Create Stress  These are examples of hormetins that will create stress: Heat has been shown to mimic the effects of exercise on the body.  Cold activates protective brown fat in the body and can lead to weight loss.  Exercising in the cold is especially beneficial.  Low-dose radiation enhances the cytotoxicity of natural killer cells.  It will also regulate the negative effects of the immune response by inhibiting the transformation of immature DCs to mDCs.  Thermal shock Strength and stamina exercises Low-Dose Radiation  Gravity Covid Repetitive stress  Temperature change forces adaptation by altering the microbiome, causing a hormonal shift.    [26:20] Fasting Is A Stress That Applies To Hormesis  Fasting is one of the most significant stressors that we can apply to hormesis.  When you understand the principle of hormesis, you definitely will look at fasting differently.  A lot of people are fasting too much. If you fast too much, you can decrease immunity and lose muscle.  Fasting shouldn’t be the same for everyone – you don’t want to over-stress yourself with fasting.    [39:10] Types of Block Fasts and Where Should I Start?  There are benefits to longer fasts.  Water-only fasts have been happening for thousands of years. It’s one of the purest forms of fasting. It forces higher levels of autophagy.  You shouldn’t do a water fast unless you are fat-adapted or you’re experienced with fasting. Feast/famine monthly will change the body hormonally.  Feasting is creating new healthy cells.    [58:30] Make Sure You Vary Your Diet Based On The Season  Diet variation can be done seasonally or monthly. Plus, you should go in and out of ketosis. If you lose enough night to sleep, you really are cognitively drunk. Eventually, Tara dove deep into sleep research and figuring out how to get the best sleep possible.  Tara realized that quality sleep enhances overall health and wellness, giving you focus on taking the day.   [04:20] If You Get Less Than Six Hours of Sleep Over Two Weeks, It Is The Same As Being Legally Drunk You can go without food longer than you can without sleep. Your body functions better when fasting. However, the same does not go for sleeping. Sleep is fundamental. If you don’t sleep for ten days, you can die.  We need sleep for longevity and health. If you don’t sleep, you won’t function well.  Your chances of getting in a car crash are exactly the same if you’re sleep-deprived or drunk.    [09:20] True or False: You Should Get Eight Hours of Sleep Every Night The myth that you need eight hours of sleep is one of Tara’s favorite ideas to debunk. Eight hours of sleep actually came about in the Industrial Revolution. Once we fall asleep, this is where some of the magical parts of the environmental factors like temperature can really come into effect.  Our neurons are triggered by a change of temperature. People use substandard olive oil and add a little bit of decent quality olive oil to it enough to pass a lab test.  Fraud in the olive oil industry has been happening for a really long time.  During a study, 70% of olive oils came back as not meeting the quality standards of extra-virgin.  Most Americans don't know what great olive oil tastes like.   [07:40] Olive Oils Are Being Cut With Inflammatory Oils Like Canola Oil  You have to be very careful when you buy an olive oil blend. Make sure to read labels in the grocery store very carefully.  Olive oil can be in a fancy bottle, with a fancy label and a high price tag. However, look at the back, and you might see that it’s actually a blend.  It could be a blend of soybean oil or sunflower oil, but it's being sold as extra virgin olive oil.  More often than not, it's a lower grade of oil that's being sold as an extra virgin oil.   [10:10] Tips For Buying Olive Oil In A Grocery Store Always look for olive oil in dark glass; the dark glass helps protect the oil.  Glass bottles are preferable.  You also want to look for a harvest date on the olive oil bottle. Blue disguises the color of the olive oil. Color is not an indicator of quality.
