[15:40] The Effects of Light on Your Circadian Rhythm and Sleep  Everyone has a circadian rhythm. Our body’s main environmental cue system for entrainment is light.  Before modern times, there wouldn't have been any artificial blue light present. The sunrise and sunset would have trained our body clocks.  When we are outside during sunset, it is the brain's cue to start reducing cortisol levels and producing something called melatonin, our sleep hormone. Cell phones, TVs, and other lights keep us in perpetual daytime and tell our brains that we don't need to go to sleep.  One way to transition your brain to sleep mode is by keeping your room nice and dark.  [28:05] Get Some Cardiovascular Exercise After Breakfast To Start Your Day  Walk after you have a big breakfast and get some sunlight. People that go out and eat in sunlight in the mornings experience more weight loss than those that eat under blue light. Cardiovascular exercise seems to be more favored in the morning for humans from a circadian rhythm standpoint. Weight lifting is better in the afternoons in terms of our circadian rhythm.  [36:10] How Eating Before Bed Will Impact Your Melatonin Production  When you eat before bed, you're going to reduce the amount of melatonin production in your body.  Melatonin is the most potent antioxidant in the world.  The less melatonin you have, the less sleep hormone you'll have, the less REM sleep you'll get, and the less deep sleep you'll get.  Without enough melatonin, you will not let your body recover properly while sleeping.  Melatonin: Miracle Molecule: https://www.amazon.com/Melatonin-Transform-Melatonin-resilience-longevity/dp/B09VDRSJBV/benazadi-20 [43:10] Can Sunglasses and Sunscreen Lead To Skin Cancer?  If you're wearing sunscreen or if you're wearing sunglasses, there is a potential cause for concern because you're no longer sending messages from the raw sunlight to your body. The type of light that comes through the sunglasses is being filtered instead of natural sunlight.  Many people believe that sunglasses and sunscreen are causing cancer because we are creating junk light. Also, if you are getting sunlight through glass, it’s not the same as getting sunlight outside.  [51:15] Red Light Therapy: Does It Really Work?  Red light is the most studied type of light.  Red light therapy has been shown to accelerate fat loss, boost collagen, reduce aging, improve muscle recovery, and improve arthritis. Plus, red light helps with sleep, psoriasis, and eczema. Dr Carrie Jones | The Role Healthy Fats Play With Our Hormones, What to do About Heavy Periods, DUTCH Test & More! KKP: 474

Today, I am lucky to have here with me, Dr. Carrie Jones, a functional medicine women's health and hormone doctor. Dr. Carrie Jones believes in the importance of both men and women understanding their hormones in a simplified manner so they can feel more empowered to take control of their health, especially when they are told everything is "normal." Still, they don't feel "normal." This episode originally aired on December 2019. Dr. Carrie is a Naturopathic Physician with a Master's in Public Health, having over 12 years in the field of functional and integrative medicine. As Adjunct Faculty for the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), she has taught courses in both Gynecology and Advanced Endocrinology. Dr. Carrie has been the Medical Director for two large integrative clinics in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Carrie is currently the Medical Director for Precision Analytical, Inc, creators of the most cutting edge hormone test on the market, the DUTCH Test. As a result, Dr. Carrie consults with the most fantastic health care practitioners all over the world on the hormone status of their patients, and lecture/teach/frequently write on the same topic. In Portland, Dr. Carrie found naturopathic medicine. She learned all the naturopathic principles, diet, lifestyle, sleep, and risk-factor mitigation. Carrie uses a lot of herbal medication, essential oils, and acupuncture. She does not put herself in any specific box. There are a time and a place for surgery and antibiotics.   [05:25] The Most Common Problem With Women’s Health There are metabolic and hormonal problems. Most women’s issues will fall into one of these two categories. A majority of women complain about their energy. Dr. Carrie says there is a lot of reasons for low energy. It can be cortisol, B12, thyroid, poor sleep, etc. Dr. Carrie does a series of tests to determine what could be causing low energy. [07:50] The Importance of Morning Sunlight Morning sunlight is light and day difference. Open your curtains. The sunshine in your eyes will wake up your brain. You have twenty to thirty minutes when you switch from unconscious to alertness. If you have overcast, it’s still okay. If it’s dark when you wake up, you will need a full-spectrum light. It will give you the sensation of being outside. Turn it on for ten minutes to a few hours. You want it within eye view – don’t just set it on the counter and walk away. When you are getting ready, set it on the bathroom counter. [15:15] Teas for Adrenal Health and Morning Energy Licorice blends and other supportive herbs. Detox teas are typically a joke. However, many detox teas have nutritive and supportive supplements. Every morning, Dr. Carries drinks green tea. Jasmine green tea is her favorite. Midmorning, Dr. Carrie drinks macha tea. [17:00] The Role Healthy Fats Play With Our Hormones   Cholesterol is the backbone of all our healthy hormones. If you don’t eat fat, a lot of things can happen to your body: You won’t ovulate, so you can’t get pregnant. Your skin will break out. Your hair will be too greasy or too dry. Fat will make hormones and increase cellular health. Athletes will often not have their periods. However, it is completely destroying their hormones. Which will also make it tough on the brain, skin, and hormones. [21:35] Dr. Carrie’s Favorite Fats and Least Favorite Fats Carrie responds well to olive-oil, avocados, and fish oil. Bad fats are things like fried foods. Eating a basket of fries will not make you feel healthy. Avoid industrial seed oils. Do the best you can and take baby steps. [25:00] About DUTCH (Dried Urine Test For Comprehensive Hormones) It’s a test in which you need to urinate on paper four or times a day. The test is handy because it will alter depending on your circadian rhythm. It will test your hormones and where your hormones are going. Our hormones have to go somewhere. We can be proactive when we learn our results from this test. [31:40] Preventing Constipation Hydration is huge. Most people are underhydrated. Diet is also essential. We lack in fiber. Eat fiber and vegetables to move your stool. Everything can be done through diet and lifestyle changes. Get good sleep. When we are not sleeping well, we do not wake up repaired, and it slows our systems down. [36:10] Eating the Keto Diet Without Restricting Hormones Hormones will tank out if women strictly eat keto. Women might not be doing the diet correctly. However, doing 100% keto will affect some women. Seven days before the cycle, progesterone should be the highest. People will need flexibility with the diet whose hormones are out of whack. [41:50] Preventing Heavy Periods Heavy periods can happen because of low progesterone, iron deficiency, or low thyroid. A lot of women are not in tune with their cycle. Some women don’t know if they are releasing eggs. When we have enough progesterone, our bleeding is easy and straightforward. Some women have too much estrogen. This will result in heavy periods and lots of clots. Find out if you ovulate. Track temperatures and look at symptoms. If you want to ovulate, you need B vitamins. [47:00] Post-Menopausal Women Once the ovaries are done, estrogen and progesterone get low. Be diligent about your stress response, self-care, and sleep cycle. Your entire body, including the mitochondria, is driven off of minerals and amino acids. When you are mineral depleted, it's like the light is dimmed. At grad school, he learned about the benefits of keto from a sports perspective. When Chris tried keto, he didn't feel that great. However, after a few days, Chris started to feel energized. During his research at grad school, Chris got to look at how keto would affect athletic performance. So, Chris decided to start making content to educate the masses on the ketogenic diet. [16:45] How Ketosis Helps You Build Muscle People think carbohydrates and insulin are required for muscle growth. However, you don’t have to have them. There are other ways that you can stimulate muscle growth. Ketones are muscle-sparing. You don’t lose muscle with ketosis. Ketones can also stimulate muscle growth by activating muscle proteins. Getting enough protein will be essential for muscle growth, especially for men. Even for people who aren’t focused on gaining muscle, there should be a focus on retaining muscle. Chronic diseases will destroy our health through muscle loss – so increase your protein intake. [21:00] How Chris Got Into Carnivore Chris tried carnivore about two and a half years ago. At first, Chris didn’t think an all-meat diet would be beneficial for people. After trying carnivore, he loved the way that he felt. It also changed the way that he looks at nutrition because he now prioritizes quality meat. Chris found that the carnivore diet gives him more strength in the gym, improves his productivity, decreases his hunger, improves his body composition, and even increases his ketone levels. After seeing the stories and hearing so many people who get excellent benefits from a carnivore diet, Chris thinks people can decide if it's the right fit for them. [26:40] Getting Vitamins And Minerals Through The Carnivore Diet Surprisingly, there are loads of nutrients in red meat. People think that plants provide us with essential micronutrients, and cutting them out will lead to deficiencies. However, micronutrients in plants are poorly absorbed in humans. Ketones are able to provide the benefits that vitamin C does. Plus, your demand for vitamin C will be less when you’re in ketosis. You need lots of vitamins on the standard American diet; your body doesn’t need as many vitamins in a carnivore diet. [31:45] Repairing The Gut With Carnivore    Gut health will improve with the carnivore diet for two reasons: Plants contain compounds that are toxic, and they can wreak havoc on our bodies. Some people are sensitive to these plants from overconsumption. So, when we eliminate those plants, the gut can start to heal through carnivore. Meat will provide nutrients to help with the repair of your gut. It can repair the lining of your gut and the structure of your gut. Thus, reducing leaky gut syndrome. [38:20] Is The Carnivore Diet Sustainable?   The carnivore diet is sustainable for an extended period of time. There is no reason to think that this diet is going to be bad for us. If you’re talking about sustainability for enjoying the diet, then it depends on the person. For someone who likes to cook and needs more flavor, the carnivore diet can be a bit boring. Jacoby’s Research For The Surgeon General of Taiwan The Surgeon General asked Dr. Jacoby of Taiwan to figure out why people there had diabetes. After doing research, Dr. Jacoby told the Surgeon General that it was their diet. Luckily, Dr. Jacoby was able to educate them on insulin resistance, diabetes, and the cause of their health problems. [04:00] Sugar Is Not Only A Drug, But It’s Also A Toxic Poison Too Sugar is a poison. Table sugar is really glucose, which is not sweet, mixed with fructose, which is sweet. Well, that’s a disaccharide which is a poison. Most people love this poison because the hippocampus in your brain is the addiction center. The brain will turn off enzymes that cause satiation. Sugar is probably 20 times worse than cocaine. Ancel Keys told us that cholesterol was causing heart disease; however, that’s a total lie. Every process in the body is nerve-muscle function. Through Dr. Jacoby Global Compression Theory, he links carbohydrates to conditions like plantar fasciitis, Alzheimer's disease, MS, ALS, and Autism. If you're carrying the genes and eating sugar, you're going to get that particular disease. [20:15] Avoiding The Hidden Dangers Of High-Fructose Corn Syrup 80% of all the food in the United States has high-fructose corn syrup in it. High-fructose corn syrup is made by putting the corn in sodium hydroxide. For many years, they were using mercury to separate the starch from the husk. Plus, it’s grown with glyphosate, which is the main ingredient in Roundup. This is one of the reasons that Autism is so high. [24:30] How Does The Immune System Fight Covid-19? The vaccine does not prevent you from getting the vaccine. It will change your response to the virus. Why do some people die from a virus and other people don’t? If your immune system is down, it won’t be able to kill the virus. While on the other hand, if you have a healthy immune system, it will kill anything. The higher our inflammatory levels, the lower our vitamin D levels will be. Take vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, melatonin, and don't eat sugar. That way, you have a 99.9% chance of not dying from this virus. [33:00] Our Food Supply In The United States Is Making The Virus Worse      Jacoby isn’t telling people don't eat sugar. He’s saying if you do eat sugar, then you're going to die. Sugar tastes great – it’s a drug! We all eat it. However, we should know better in 2021. Sadly, our tax dollars are broadcasting lies. Plus, we are wearing masks and being told to stay inside. Money and control are at the root of our problems. There is a direct link between sugar in our diet and nerve damage, which results in a wide range of chronic, debilitating diseases that are seemingly unrelated. [41:30] Your Body Is Built To Heal Itself + How You Can Help Stop eating sugar, get vitamin D, vitamin C, melatonin, get sun, and you’re going to be fine. That’s what it takes for your body to handle the virus. Jacoby says that if you are selling the keto diet, then you should be able to open your restaurants. If your restaurant is selling sugar, then you need to stay closed. People should be outraged! We can empower others and change the entire outcome of our country. [49:15] How To Kick Your Sugar Addiction + Help Your Health Jacoby puts butter in his coffee, and it changed everything. Italians put butter in their coffee. Human beings eat fat – that’s their natural diet. Sugar is not in our natural diet. You can also put sea salt in your coffee to replenish electrolytes. If you just eat fat, then you will live forever. Theoretically, all you need is fat because you will make your own sugar. [52:50] Artificial Sweeteners Could Be The Poison Ruining Your Health Artificial sugar is still a sugar molecule with a toxin. Monkfruit and stevia are okay. [00:55] How James Swanwick Helps People Feel Better By Quitting Alcohol In 30 days of not drinking, James lost 13 pounds, slept better, looked better, and got a job on ESPN.  After 30 days, James decided to stop drinking altogether; that was 12 years ago. Now that he doesn’t drink, he has created a business to help people sleep better and to help people stop drinking. Even a seemingly innocent glass of alcohol each night has detrimental effects on your life.  Any amount of alcohol each night is enough to cause brain damage.  [07:10] Saying No To Peer Pressure and Alcohol Consumption The social pressure to drink is high. However, it is becoming lower. There is a worldwide movement of people becoming alcohol conscious. Millennials have never drunk less in their entire life. In fact, alcohol has a real image problem at the moment.  Remember, 93% of all communication is body language. Go through life being open and relaxed; that way, people don’t harass you to drink. [15:05] Do You Struggle With Instant Gratification? Get Rid of Temptations  An alcohol buzz is a short-term pleasure. We should look at our life and make long-term choices.  Long-term pleasure is so much more pleasurable and rewarding. We all have to sacrifice something; should we sacrifice short-term rewards for long-term enjoyment?  James will sacrifice short-term pleasure for long-term gain. The choices that you made six years ago can pay off today.  [19:20] Is It Possible To Drink Alcohol and Get A Good Night’s Sleep?  Any amount of alcohol close to bedtime is going to disrupt your sleep. When you’re tired, you tend to seek out sugary foods to give yourself an energy spike.  You are better off having alcohol for breakfast than at nighttime. That way, your body can work on getting rid of toxins during the day. There is a direct correlation between alcohol drinking and weight gain.  Also, alcohol will destroy energy levels.  [23:40] What A Lack of Sleep Is Doing To Your Body and Mind  When you are tired, you are miserable.  While on the other hand, when you sleep well, everything feels so much better. If you want to feel better, you need to put a premium on your sleep. Don’t drink alcohol at night, don’t eat before bedtime, and don’t look at screens before bedtime.  Sleeping above 69 degrees is compromising your sleep.  When we have compromised sleep, we are not repairing and restoring.  Putting a high focus and premium on optimizing your sleep is critical. [29:30] Ditch Artificial Light and Live By Candlelight During The Night Any artificial light at night compromises your sleep.  Light will suppress your body’s melatonin release.
