[00:55] Dr. Diane Speaks About Her Pain-To-Purpose Story With IBS and Mold Sickness Dr. Diane had IBS at a very young age. She would go up to two weeks without having a bowel movement. Ultimately, the IBS component was what got Dr. Diane into naturopathic medical school as far as her interest. Mold is so misunderstood in the chronic infection world. Sometimes, Dr. Diane would have to be carried because she couldn’t walk, she would forget where she lived, and had crazy numbness in her hands. There is a lot of misinformation out there about healing from mold and Lyme. [05:15] What You Should Know About Mold Illness and Your Immune System Mold illness is a genetic anomaly where our immune system is not able to recognize mold toxins. There will be symptoms when we breathe in mold toxins, and our immune system won’t remove the toxins. Smelling mold is an easy way to know it’s there. If you can smell mold, it’s a positive test. It’s estimated that up to 50% of the buildings in the United States have water damage. [08:10] Signs of Mold Illness Include Pain, Chronic Fatigue, and Brain Fog Mold illness will result in pain of some level. Chronic fatigue is another prominent symptom of mold sickness. Also, many people will have brain fog if they suffer from mold sickness. All sorts of other things can happen because the nervous system is so dysregulated. Mold will also affect the digestive tract. [15:05] The First Thing You Need To Know Is How Much Mold You Have Do you think you have mold in your home? The biggest thing is to understand if you have mold is how much you have. If the mold quantity is high enough, you will have to move. It’s almost impossible to get well in a house with severe mold. The same year, Kelly’s dad died from massive health complications. Eventually, Kelly found a company that used herbal supplements to treat her pain. Plus, she found a doctor who treated her pain with energy. It turns out, Kelly’s pain stemmed from her dad’s death. Now, Kelly has a better lifeforce through the healing process. “There is such a beauty to realizing that we have the power to heal inside of us.” – Kelly Kennedy [17:40] The Issues With Having Scars Fascia is a thin casing of connective tissue surrounding and holding every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place. If you pick up a chicken to cook it, you'll see fascia underneath the skin. The fascia holds everything together. It’s the secondary nervous system because it is in complete communication with the skin and the fluid. The liquid inside our fascia is blood and lymphatic fluid. The lymphatic fluid is the space between our cells. If the fascia is tight, then the lymphatic fluid can’t flow properly. When the fascia snags, it creates a scar. “Blood follows where energy goes.” -Kelly Kennedy Use scar therapy to get the blood flowing again. [31:10] The Ways We Can Fine-Tune Our Emotions Since the car accident, Kelly realized that nothing is a mistake. The hardest thing for Kelly to do is to “be.” When we are still, all the thoughts come in. The pain will come back when we have unsettling thoughts. Most of us are not in survival mode. It’s time to get into parasympathetic mode. Start letting things go. However, don’t do “work.” Just spend time with yourself in a quiet space. See what’s going on in your head. At the end of the day, no matter where you go or what you do, you’ll still have your thoughts. We need to clean our fears, worries, dreads, anger, and resentment. Instead, come from love. “The reality is we create our own reality.” – Kelly Kennedy [43:00] Why You Should Have An Armpit Everyone in the world should have an armpit. Some people are puffy where there should be an armpit - this is stagnant lymphatics. If you look swollen in your neck area, that’s a little bit of lymph fluid that’s swelling. Lymph fluid should be flowing like water. [47:00] How To Dry Brush Open up your endpoints first. If your endpoints are shut down, then nothing can move through. Start from the head then move downward. Pump open your lymph. It should be light and gentle. Dry brush in your shower. Brush toward your heart. Go close first, then go farther out. For instance, start at your armpit, arm, then your wrist. Use the intention to bring it all into your heart. [06:35] The Difference Between Cutting Calories Without Fasting vs. Cutting Calories With Fasting A 16-hour eating window is unhealthy no matter how many calories you are eating. When we narrow our feeding window, we can start to get real benefits and repairs. Our body is a self-healing machine; we have damage that our body always fixes. When we give our bodies a break from digestion, then our bodies can increase the repairs of damaged cells. Remember, your body doesn’t start to ramp up repairs until six hours after your last meal. [11:30] Fasting Around The World: The Religious and Spiritual History of Fasting Fasting existed in virtually every single culture. 3,000 years ago, fasting wasn’t for health. Instead, fasting was to appease the gods. Fasting is excellent for physiological changes that put you in a more meditative state. An ancient physiologist said that for epilepsy, you should fast and exercise. Two thousand years later, we learned that fasting could cure childhood epilepsy. Sadly, the medicine of fasting was washed out until the last 400 years. Now, we know that fasting is a super powerful tool for health. [24:40] The Reason You Need To Stop Skipping Breakfast Most people who practice daily fasting skip breakfast and eat at noon for the first time. However, our bodies do not want to process nutrients throughout the evening. Our circadian rhythms have hardwired us to process food more efficiently earlier in the day. In the later afternoon, we become much less efficient at processing food. By nighttime, we are terrible at processing food. [37:10] What You Need To Know About Fasting and Cancer When you fast, your cells reject external inputs. During a fast, your healthy cells are protecting themselves. Fasting during chemo treatment results in less nausea, less vomiting, fewer headaches, and less fatigue. You can increase the dose of chemotherapy when the patient can tolerate it better. Overall, you can give more chemo, kill cancer, and hurt the patient less during a fast. [42:20] What Can Fasting Do For High Blood Pressure? The American Heart Association says that high blood pressure cannot be cured. However, studies show that prolonged water fasting can reverse high blood pressure. In 10 days of water fasting, 80% of high blood pressure patients can achieve normal blood pressure and get off their medications. People with the worst blood pressure had the best outcomes from water fasting. [47:35] Productivity or Lack of Energy: Potential Side Effects During A Longer Fast Many people find difficulty with long fasts when they are unhealthy. Fasting can result in skin rashes, nausea, headaches, and fatigue. During a fast, you can become more contemplative or more productive. Overall, there are many good and bad side effects that happen. During a prolonged fast, Steve would feel excellent and thoughtful. On other days, Steve would have no energy. AND MUCH MORE! Shawn ended up getting really into supplements. He would take supplements, work out and see all these changes in his body. After struggling with multiple medications, the doctors eventually settled on a high dose of Adderall. Jack was on Adderall for twenty years. Fasting is the quickest way to get a healing response in the body, and it is the one tool that harnesses innate intelligence. Also, fasting is free and time-efficient. The whole world can do fasting; they just need to learn what it’s about. Fasting is this healing response that the world is catching on to now because it's as powerful a healing tool as sleep. Every religion disagrees on everything except fasting. Overall, fasting transforms people physically, spiritually, and emotionally. The Importance of Having A Balance Between Feasting and Fasting People need to understand that symptoms should be read and acknowledged. Women have three primary sex hormones that drive their behaviors, sleep, and mental state. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone need vastly different things. Fasting is a tool that should be used with proper feasting; you should be able to go in and out of ketosis. When feasting, remember to eat based on the season. No healthy culture ever stays on the same diet because they can't. Our genes and our microbiome are set up to change diets, whether it be weekly, monthly, or seasonally. What Are The Health Benefits of Ketosis? Your brain gets so many benefits from ketosis. Almost two-thirds of the population are experiencing cognitive decline. Your brain loves ketones. For decades, people have been put on a keto diet to fix neurodegenerative diseases. Ketones are a tool for regenerating the brain. With fasting and ketosis, you hit therapeutic levels that you can't hit, just being in ketosis. Your brain needs these ketones to heal. Plus, ketosis will change the microbiome and increase diversity. Lastly, ketosis will help turn off bad genes due to stressful living. How Important Is Gratitude? The most crucial fasting tool is gratitude. Every time you say thank you to someone, you are releasing oxytocin which brings down cortisol. When cortisol comes down, insulin is easier to regulate, and your sex hormones will be a piece of cake. If you don’t fix the cell, you won’t get well. Gratitude will decrease cellular inflammation. When your inflammation is reduced, your cellular function will increase, which will help you feel good. Overall, gratitude is a free tool that you can use! No, pregnant women should not practice intermittent fasting. If you’re throwing up and you can’t eat, then in some sense, you are fasting. However, your number one priority should be nutrition. Find food that you don’t throw up. There are other tools that you can magnify once you are pregnant. For instance, you will pass down your microbiome to your child. So, you need to understand what supports a healthy microbiome. Pregnancy is an excellent time for fermented foods. Also, keep in mind what you are putting on your skin; make sure all your products are very clean. Overall, there are tons to unpack for the pregnant woman to have a healthy pregnancy, and fasting is not the tool you want to be leaning into. How Often Should You Check Your Ketone Levels? Ben doesn’t check his ketone levels because he has been doing keto since 2013. So, he knows when he is in ketosis vs. when he’s not in ketosis. When you’re starting keto, it can be a valuable tool to know whether or not you are genuinely in ketosis. Many people will test their urine because it is the cheapest option; however, urine testing is not the best. When your cells use ketones, they will not spill out in your urine. While on the other hand, breath meters are hit or miss. Ben recommends Biosense if you are interested in testing your ketones through breath. https://mybiosense.com/ All in all, a blood ketone test will give you glucose and ketones levels. If you’re 0.5 or higher, then you are in ketosis. Test your ketones for a month or two. Eventually, you won’t need to test anymore. Keto vs. Carnivore: Which Diet Is Best For You? Carnivore is technically keto because when you’re doing carnivore, you are in ketosis. Both diets are good options, but Ben says to try keto first. Keto is low carb, but it’s not zero carbs like a carnivore diet. If you go from 150 grams of carbs to zero, that’s going to feel challenging. However, going from keto to carnivore isn’t as challenging for you. Many people have naturally started carnivore diets because they plateaued on keto. Carnivore can be a great natural transition to try something new and change things up for your body. We don’t need motivation; instead, we need momentum. All in all, carnivore can be an accessible version of keto if you want something simple to do. Intermittent Fasting: Is It Safe For Your Children? Fasting isn't a fad; fasting is a primal way our body approaches food. Children live in a human body and have the same primal need to go through periods without food. Sadly, we beat that sense out of them. We tell kids to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then, they aren't allowed to eat after dinner. Dr. Mindy says to watch the natural rhythms of your children's hunger levels. Do they wake up happy, or do they wake up crazy hungry? If they're happy, you can easily go an hour or two before feeding them. Make sure you are learning their natural rhythms. We need to tap into our children's natural time-restricted eating. Overall, don't push food on them when they may not be hungry. Should You Do Keto If You Don’t Have A Gallbladder? Gallbladder removal surgery is one of the top surgeries in the United States. Many people think that the gallbladder is what produces bile to break down fat and detoxify. In reality, the gallbladder is more of a storage house for the bile. The liver produces bile. Bile is a beautiful green substance that helps you break down fat and detoxify. If you don’t have a gallbladder and you start to do keto, the liver needs to make up for the absence of the gallbladder. If your liver can’t keep up with the fat, that’s where issues will occur. You may experience diarrhea and stomach issues. So, you must go low and slow and eat small and frequent meals. Eventually, your liver will adapt so you can do regular keto and intermittent fasting. Squeezing and relaxing begin to get brittle as you age from atherosclerosis or clogged arteries. If you have clogged arteries and low nitric oxide production, then there will be sexual problems.
