Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Anthony Youn. He is considered one of the nation’s best-known experts in looking younger with or without surgery. His motto is “True Beauty Is Holistic™,” and he believes all people can achieve their true beauty using a combination of holistic factors, which do not necessarily involve surgery. For the past dozen years he has shared his tips for holistic plastic surgery on such television programs as The Rachael Ray Show, The Doctors, The Doctor Oz Show, Fox and Friends, and many others. In this episode, Dr. Youn dives into the intricacies of aging, unveiling the profound impact of internal factors on our external appearance. From the critical role of autophagy in cellular renewal to navigating sun protection, skin cancer, and nutritional decline, Dr. Youn is a wealth of insights. He sheds light on the saboteur that is sugar, speaking about its role in premature aging and skin deformities. The rise of red light therapy in alternative medicine takes center stage, challenging traditional medicine's hesitation. Please tune in for this enlightening voyage to unlock the fountain of youth within ourselves. This includes medical aspects such as plaque in arteries and cellular perspectives, like the functioning of mitochondria. Internal aging may manifest through issues like cellular waste buildup. - The concept of autophagy highlights the importance of cleaning out cellular waste products. Dr. Youn suggests that practices like fasting can contribute to this process and support cellular health. - Holistic health experts emphasize the connection between gut health and skin appearance. - According to Dr. Youn, healing the gut is considered a key factor in achieving beautiful and youthful skin. This perspective aligns with the emerging understanding of the gut-skin axis. [13:00] Navigating Sun Protection, Skin Cancer, and Environmental Safeguards - The conversation emphasizes the significance of sun protection in preventing skin damage and, more critically, skin cancer. The narrative underscores the potential severity of skin cancer, especially on the face, and the importance of avoiding it. - Dr. Youn discusses the distinction between mineral sunblocks (sitting on the skin’s surface) and chemical sunscreens (absorbed into the body). Mineral sunblocks containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are highlighted for their surface barrier effect. However, the challenge is that they can be visible, especially on darker skin tones. - Chemical sunscreens, particularly oxybenzone and octinoxate, are noted as potential hormone disruptors and harmful to coral reefs. This raises environmental and health concerns, restricting their use in certain locations like Hawaii or the Caribbean. - For children, Dr. Youn suggests using physical sunblocks (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) due to their effectiveness and the children's likely indifference to the visible residue. [19:45] Nourishment in Decline: Unraveling the Erosion of Nutritional Value in Our Food Supply - A study spanning from 1950 to 1999 examined the nutritional content of fruits and vegetables released to the public. The findings revealed a consistent decline in the nutritional status of these commonly used produce items each year. Notably, protein, iron, and vitamin C were among the nutrients that showed a decline. - The study highlighted a concerning trend of decreasing nutritional value in fruits and vegetables year by year. This decline raises questions about the quality of the produce available for consumption, with potential implications for overall health. - Holistic health experts often attribute the decline in nutritional content to changes in soil quality and modern farming practices. The observation is that the soil may not be as nutrient-rich as it once was, leading to less nutritious produce. - Nutrient depletion extends beyond natural produce to ultra-processed foods. Many individuals consume these less nutritious options, compounding the challenge of obtaining essential nutrients from the modern food supply. [29:30] Sweet Saboteur: Sugar's Role in Premature Aging and Skin Deformities - Sugar is identified as a significant contributor to premature aging in the body. - Sugar can bond to proteins in the body, particularly collagen and elastin. Collagen, which constitutes a significant portion of the skin, provides strength and tightness. Sugar bonding to collagen can cause deformities, likened to the logs of a log cabin, preventing the skin from maintaining its youthful tightness. - Chronic spikes in sugar lead to chronic spikes in insulin. Over time, cells may become less responsive to insulin, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels and potential development of conditions like type 2 diabetes. - Chronic insulin spikes contribute to chronic inflammation, impacting skin health by leading to issues like breakouts and inflammation. [37:50] Red Light Therapy's Rise in Alternative Medicine vs. Traditional Medicine's Hesitation - Red light therapy is gaining popularity in alternative medicine circles, but there appears to be a disconnect with traditional physicians, including plastic surgeons and dermatologists. - Despite its growing popularity, discussions on red light therapy are notably absent from annual meetings and professional conversations in traditional medical fields. - There is a substantial body of scientific literature supporting the anti-aging benefits of red light therapy for the skin. - The therapy is believed to contribute to improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, skin hydration, and elasticity. However, the exact mechanism of how red light therapy works, possibly involving mitochondrial support, is not fully understood. [46:15] The Crucial Role of Autophagy in Aging and Strategies for Renewal - Autophagy, a cellular recycling process, plays a crucial role in the aging process. As cells accumulate intracellular waste over time, the lack of efficient autophagy can lead to the buildup of cellular waste products, slowing down cell processes and contributing to premature aging. - It's established that autophagy decreases with age, contributing to the accumulation of cellular waste. Dr. Youn emphasizes the importance of promoting autophagy to help cleanse cells from the inside out and address aging at the cellular level. - Fasting is recommended as a strategy to promote autophagy. Dr. Youn suggests fasting for at least 12 hours, with a 16-hour fast being ideal. This fasting period helps initiate autophagy, allowing cells to use accumulated waste as energy and rejuvenate. - Dr. Youn introduces the concept of an "autophagy diet" designed to continue the autophagy process even after breaking a fast. The diet involves high-fat, low-protein foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (cold-water fish, nuts, seeds) and polyphenol-rich foods (dark-colored fruits and vegetables). This approach aims to supercharge autophagy without requiring extended fasting periods. AND MUCH MORE!
