Urban Rescue Ranch is King of the Texas Jungle [Ep. 92]

There is NO ONE on YouTube like Ben of the Urban Rescue Ranch. He’s got a kangaroo, a possum, a pair of rheas (including the frequently-violent Kevin)... so there’s a lot to talk about with his mini-farm and translating it to TikTok and YouTube. How’d he learn to be King of the Urban Rescue Jungle? From YouTube, naturally. Ben’s formal education wasn’t in animal wrangling, or even biology, but he’s built a tremendous knowledge base over time just by putting in the work. And it started with pigeons. The pandemic aligned a few stars for Ben, who was all of a sudden home to be able to do things like bottle-feeding babies every 4 hours. It was a huge boost for his channel and ones like it, since so many people’s attention turned toward the outdoors and self-sufficiency. Gardening and animals got hot, and fast. The bad news is that there just aren’t any vacations. Even so, Ben’s looking at expanding his operation. He needs more land for… well, everything. But the one thing he won’t get is a cassowary, and there are several very good reasons for that.Patrons jump in to ask questions about how badly it hurts when Kevin bites Ben, when he almost lost an eye, nearly killing himself by eating raw eggs, and the stresses of zookeeping and content creation. Thanks to everyone who showed up to a truly unique episode with Urban Rescue Ranch, and a special thanks to all the Patrons who make this show possible every single week!Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Urban Rescue Ranch: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheUrbanRescueRanchChicken in an Egg - Smarter Every Day 254: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKNlPrEQwPY Apple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.  CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw  » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown  » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown  » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown   » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Learn more about your ad choices. Jeremy Scott Talks the Love & Hate of CinemaSins [Ep. 91]

Jeremy Scott has played a part in nearly 1,000 analytical video essays criticizing movies for their problems, so now it’s time to put CinemaSins himself on the hot seat. We start off with a quickie about near-perfect movies like District 19 and Finding Nemo and a throwback to some of our past animator guests.Jeremy’s noticed some patterns in perpetual sins in cinema, like the stylistic elements of dialogue that work just fine for a movie, but would be awful in real life -- and at least one filmmaker has said he’s used CinemaSins’ videos as a guide to avoid pitfalls in his own work. Opening with studio logos? Sin. Egregious critiques and inventing problems just to keep a job? Also probably a sin. It seems to have started for Jeremy with watching Terminator 2 on VHS, and in the 30 years since he’s developed a character with serious criticism interspersed with deliberate ignorance and comedic sarcasm. Sometimes that funnels viewers down a ‘hate to subscriber’ pipeline that actually works out for everyone. But it’s not all just movies for Jeremy -- he’s authored “The Ables” series of young adult novels about a gang of disabled superheroes who combine their powers, and he’s just about to drop “Original Sin: From Preacher’s Kid to the Creation of CinemaSins.” We’ve got a lot to talk about with the writing process and what it’s like to be so prolific in several different genres. Patrons ask about popcorn, how long it takes him to watch a movie, the first truly awful movie he ever walked out of, and more. Thanks to everyone who showed up for Jeremy’s sharp wit and tremendous expertise, and a special thanks to all the patrons who make this show possible every single week. If Andy Kaufman Wrote Love Songs & Graduated Harvard [Ep. 90]

Austin Weber started off studying music at the Ivy League level, and years after a viral video of him singing ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” at various locations in Japan, he’s built an amazing career online. But who does he sound like, and is it even appropriate to suggest similarities to someone?!Feeling music is easier than talking about it, Austin says, before he goes into the other media he’s trained in -- including sculpting. Then we’ve got to ask what “electro acoustic composition” actually means before deciding whether one of Bach’s fugues is on par with Warrant’s Cherry Pie. Austin’s breakthrough video? It took him about 2 hours to make, and he wasn’t even going to bother to release it. We’re all pretty glad that he did, and now he’s developed and activated a broad network of very talented friends to keep progressing in the music world.Patrons jump in to ask Austin about TikTok, day jobs, favorite ice cream and more. Thanks to Austin for spending so much time with us, and thanks to everyone who showed up for the live recording -- and a special spoonful of gratitude slop goes into the bowls of our Patrons, who make this show happen each and every week.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Austin Weber: https://www.youtube.com/c/AustinWeber/featuredApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGoogle 🎥 CREDITS:Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster  →  https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.💬 CONNECT WITH US:» Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw  » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown  » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown  » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown   » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Learn more about your ad choices. Conspiracy Frogs and Bad Science with Oki’s Weird Stories [Ep. 89]

Oki investigates, analyzes, and tells weird stories of all kinds, from the Alex Jones-driven conspiracy about water quality making frogs gay to the fraudster and ‘modern psychopath’ Jacob Wohl. And the more Oki talks, the more you can tell his knowledge runs deep about most everything. He’s part Internet Historian, part Vsauce2, and part Whang!, and it’s why he’s so passionate about getting to the bottom of media including films on the Kinocast and L. Ron Hubbard’s prolific literary catalog. Oki explains why he’s not bothered by conspiracy theories and that he really just wants to hear crazy stuff. Does ketchup cause cancer? When do the benefits outweigh the effects? And how does that relate to the bizarre rise of Alex Jones? Recycling, tobacco company deception, Popeye and spinach… all these science-based topics are teeming with more complexity and sometimes less honesty than we think. Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule for expertise? 10,000 steps for a healthy heart? There’s a lot to probe and question in things we take for granted.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0?si=JnX3-HMSREmBkNHR7jkznwApple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw 0:00:00 - Intro0:07:59 - What Do You Wish You Could Talk About?0:14:03 - Is Drinking Water Turning Frogs Gay?0:29:38 - Conspiracies, Balancing Toxicity and Entertainment0:40:44 - The Recycling Industry0:51:16 - Telling Controversial Tales on YouTube0:59:43 - Spinach is a LIE1:09:31 - Junk Science1:22:40 - Making Mistakes1:46:59 - Patron Questions2:07:53 - See Ya Space Cowboys       Oki's Weird Stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjDQKxiTVpXutZc2Ra9wCAgKinocast: https://www.youtube.com/c/KinoKast/videosNPR Recycling: https://www.npr.org/2020/09/11/897692090/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled The Patrons have a ball poking and prodding Oki (who stuck around for ANOTHER 2 hours in the aftershow chat), and with every answer we dig a little deeper into his mind with each answer. Thanks to everyone who came out to hang with Oki, and thanks especially to the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week. Sara Dietschy’s Escape From New York [Ep. 88]

New York City recently lost her, and although she’ll miss bagels, she’s ready to move on from a media hub. Seeing friends, family, and going to normal events mashed up with having actual space to live and work to make all the difference. Associations with other creators means talking about collabs and how they’ve changed over the last 5 years. It used to be that collabs were easy and mutually useful almost automatically. But now? Well, it’s different, for a few important reasons. Making the numbers work in online media is wild, and Sara explains why she’s not thrilled to work with the top agencies in the business. She’s got a better way to do it, and her track record suggests it works. And with constant improvements and new options like Apple’s new announcement about podcast subscriptions, it’s easier than ever to monetize your projects without submitting to advertising overlords. Kevin opens a raucous *baked bean discussion* before Patrons ask all sorts of questions ranging from favorite guitars to the little things that make Sara happy. It’s been a long, sometimes bumpy ride from goofing around with videos for high school assignments to reviewing guitar pedals to now being an international authority on tech and creativity, but as Sara says, *“The journey is never sexy… but the destination is.”* Thanks to everyone who turned up for the live recording, and thanks to all the Patrons who make this show possible every single week. Is Inside a Mind YouTube's Best Storyteller? [Ep. 87]

Kevin starts out by talking Dad and Nathan Barnatt, whose intersection with Inside a Mind was critical in the earlier days. As Jamie says, “Not many people have the drive to be a homeless YouTuber like Nathan has.” *Content flagging* and *shadow bans* are serious problems for YouTubers like Jamie, and the ‘I Am Sophie’ videos demonstrate why. The saga of those videos disappearing, even through advanced search, and their un-shadowbanning is worth hearing. Algorithm changes? They matter, too. So what’s actually happening inside this mind? Kevin asks about the ideation process and how Jamie manages to tell stories differently than others. It’s audio first, which makes sense for a storyteller, and it’s Patreon from there. The Forest Fenn treasure, Omega Mart/Meow Wolf, Pizza Time Pizza, accusations of being in a cult -- that delineation between reality and… not reality gets murkier by the minute. Thanks to everyone who showed up live, and especially to all our Patrons. You really do make this show happen every single week. Getting Off the Creative Island [Ep. 86]

*Spotify:* https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0 *Apple:* https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203 *Patreon* : https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw The big message of Episode 86 is to “ *Get Off the Island*.” We’re finally getting off the island ourselves, as hours before recording we signed a 52-episode contract to join Studio71’s stable of podcasts. Kevin’s still recovering from getting stabbed, so it’s a good time to have a light chat about why we’re joining up with Marques Brownlee, Jon Taffer and Bob Saget. We could’ve spent hours talking about all the reasons we love the audience, Discord members, and especially Patrons, but we had to limit that to about 20 minutes. Really, without everyone’s support, we don’t come close to getting to this stage, so we go into detail about why that matters so much. There are some hugely important themes discussed in this one, from what it means to be on an island creatively, to why it’s so important to deal with that isolation, and why it’s critical to lose -- and to get used to losing. We’re losers, and you should be, too. This one’s a bit shorter than most because Kevin nearly dropped dead while recording, but feel free to drop us a line about how any of these themes have affected your creative path. Whether it’s a YouTube comment, a tweet, or a Discord message, we want to hear it. 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. 💬 CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com ( https://thecreateunknown.com/ ) Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. And he's the perfect fit for TCU, having worked for a few years to put himself in a position to quit his real job and embrace the independent creative life. He tells us what that process has been like, including progress on his YouTube channel with a focus on photography and equipment. As we predicted back in 2018, the *dislike button on YouTube appears to be on its way out*. Reactions have been overwhelmingly negative from creators, viewers, and... honestly, everyone. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? Andrew Bowser Talks Onyx and the Horrors of YouTube Filmmaking [Ep. 84]

*Spotify:* https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0 *Apple:* https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203 *Patreon* : https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw You’ve almost certainly seen a video with *Andrew Bowser’s “Onyx the Fortuitous,”* whether it’s him being ‘ *weird Satanist guy* ’ or giving a too-detailed, flowery, dark witness account of a news story while dressed as an Arby’s employee. Onyx has been a viral YouTube staple for years now, but he’s coming to the big screen -- with your help and ours. Andrew starts by explaining Onyx’s weird combination of hyper-confidence and backpedalling with his famously quick and frequent interjections of “idunno.” Matt describes it as a “squirrely over-caffeinated charm,” but at one point Onyx was a little more subdued. At this point, though, is it even possible to dial it back? YouTube worked for Onyx in some ways, but it turned out not to be the best fit for the character or the skits. TikTok stepped in at just the right time, and Onyx embraced the fast-paced, broad distribution of short form Onyx glory. Sometimes it’s topical, most of the time it’s not, but TikTok works either way. Part of why it works is Andrew’s complex theory on comedy, which is that it needs to be an emotional over-commitment to something absurd. Onyx getting upset about something isn’t intended to be funny, but it is because we’re witnessing something that’s just way more intense than it should be. Andrew’s career has been a wild ride, with tremendous success on producing/directing, but he’s struggled for 14 years to get funding for his own projects. Why does he keep going? Because he’s not normal, just like we aren’t. It’s important to be weird and defy all the evidence in front of you. Like Andrew says, “I’m crazy and I’m going to do this UNTIL I DROP DEAD!” We talk about the Onyx film -- its plot, its Kickstarter, its incredible rewards -- and then answer Patreon questions about what it’s like to be known as Onyx, the delicate business of cringe comedy, how Andrew got the Arby’s uniform, and… Onyx’s fursona. He’s got one, sniff sniff. We’re working on something significant, and it means we’ve got to skip this next week (and we haven’t had a skip in about 5 months). But we’ll be back the week after that with a new guest. Stay fresh, babies! *BowserVids* : youtube.com/user/bowservidstotally ( http://www.youtube.com/user/bowservidstotally ) *Onyx Kickstarter:* www.kickstarter.com/projects/1418036943/onyx-the-fortuitous-and-the-talisman-of-souls ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1418036943/onyx-the-fortuitous-and-the-talisman-of-souls ) 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Food4Dog's YouTube Story Is The Best We've Ever Heard [Ep. 83]

*Spotify:* https://open.spotify.com/show/0Tl7tpMssVqt7O4qej8Ro0 *Apple:* https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-create-unknown/id1437172203 *Patreon* : https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown Join our *Discord* to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw *Food4Dogs* is a UK-turned-New Zealand gaming YouTuber with absolutely nothing traditional about her story, and she’s got a lot of it to tell. We go back 30 years to Britta’s first forays into technology jobs and the internet, which makes her stand out among her peers in terms of her comfort and confidence with the medium. Sometimes friends and family don’t understand her love for gaming, but she keeps her head up. The Grand Dames -- her gaming friend-group with their own podcast -- understands, though. Then we hear the most incredible story we’ve ever witnessed on The Create Unknown -- Britta’s improbable journey from PS3 contest winner to wildly popular international gaming YouTuber. We’re not going to summarize the story here because honestly, you really need to hear her tell it. It’s amazing, and it’s a real-life example of the archetypal ‘Hero’s Journey.’ It’s easy to understand how gaming took root in Britta’s life as she explains how a new game carries excitement, wondering who she’ll meet, a bit of anxiety, and what she describes as “pure magic.” Combine that outlook with the wisdom she’s gained over several decades and gaming takes on a new meaning. And as she says, “If you want to see life in all of its glory… start a YouTube channel.” The Patrons have lots of questions for Britta, including what other content she watches in her limited time, whether she’s got any gaming limitations, her excitement over assistive technology, and why she really has no interest in shooting anyone in the head. We can’t reinforce enough that this is one of the best episodes we’ve recorded, if not the best. It’s one that we’ll be very, very proud of for as long as we do TCU. Thanks to Britta for spending a few hours with us, and thanks to everyone who showed up -- and stayed after! -- for this unparalleled event. *Food4Dogs* : youtube.com/Food4Dogs ( https://www.youtube.com/Food4Dogs ) 🎥 CREDITS: Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com ( http://megadrivemusic.com/ ) Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.
