UrAvgConsumer is Normal in a Sea of Tech Nerds

Judner’s UrAvgConsumer channel is one of the leading tech channels on YouTube, and it all started because he didn’t want to stand out. That mentality of delivering valuable information to normal people -- not just the tech-obsessed -- has driven millions of subscribers and an enduring fan base. So what’s the deal with tech YouTubers and not having phone cases?!?Tech isn’t necessarily mind-blowing right now, and Judner points out that we’re in an age of refinement rather than pure crazy invention. Kevin’s got the same problem on Vsauce2, so how do you make the seemingly mundane truly entertaining? One thing Judner knows for sure, though, is that he wants to keep going until it’s not sustainable. His routine has changed quite a bit over the last 2 years, and not just from the pandemic. Does branching out to work with others actually help keep you grounded? Judner travels a lot for tech events, and he gets even more offers to review products -- way more than he can even handle. What can one person do with all that tech? Will he ever do a retro tech review? What type of tech is missing altogether? And what’s the link between Full House and Air Bud?Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live recording, and especially to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw UrAvgConsumer: https://www.youtube.com/c/UrAvgConsumerApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.  CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw  » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown  » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown  » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown   » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Learn more about your ad choices. Could Vsauce3 Survive the Movies?

A lot can happen in a year and a half, like… winning an Emmy for a YouTube Original and filming its second season. And this time we not only talk to Vsauce3’s Jake Roper, but also to Eric Langlay, the VFX and cinematography wizard behind Could You Survive the Movies? and about a decade of Vsauce videos. So what’s the one movie CYSTM will never be able to do? The answer is kind of surprising, and it shows why it’s so hard to work with production companies -- and both Eric and Jake discuss why this one movie is such a problem. After Jake finds his memory card and Eric reminisces about the horrors of seeing Matt in his boxers, they discuss just how difficult it is to shoot CYSTM. They’re on a much more rapid pace than most scripted shows, and they pack dozens of shoots into one day. We’ve talked in the past about the efficiency of YouTubers, so what’s the balance between the demands of a TV-style production with the talents of online creators? And after all that work, YouTube seems to have made discoverability way too difficult for CYSTM. It’s a quirk of the release schedule, but there’s no solution in sight. It’s frustrating that CYSTM videos aren’t served out to the Vsauce3 audience, but it’s just the way things work. You can’t depend on YouTube, but you CAN depend on spaghetti and meatballs.Patrons jump into ask about the future of CYSTM, including whether there will ever be an episode on a cartoon or animated movie, the dumbest movie they want to cover, the best thing about Top Gun, and an on-set animal massacre so terrible that all evidence of it has been buried. What are Jake and Eric’s Taco Bell orders? Will they ever do a Man vs. Food style show? And did they really meet on Grindr? Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, we had tons of fun in Discord. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. PsychicPebbles on Making Smiling Friends

3 years ago we started with a couple short, 40-minute episodes per month. Now we’re 2 hours every week and putting our 100th show into the books -- and we couldn’t have done it without the support of PsychicPebbles *and* all of you. So, now it’s time to smile with us, Friends. It’s the Return of the King, and naturally we want to know as much as we can about the upcoming season of Smiling Friends. After establishing that time zones are the worst, Zach tells us that the show will ban laughs of any kind. It’s a pilot now, but that’ll be Episode 1 on release -- and both Zach and Michael are exercising tons of influence over the show, including its minutiae. Why? It’s just easier. And YouTube/Newgrounds types are capable of that and more, which is why they’re undervalued assets in the marketplace. They just don’t waste production time or money and they can do all the jobs required, so it’s decidedly NOT network TV or Hollywood. What do lukewarm cucumbers taste like? Either way, you need clear goals as you also recognize that everyone else has their own individual story. The show’s not even out yet, but we want to know what’s next after Smiling Friends. Movies? It all depends on how audiences react, and fun really isn’t the priority.Kevin hates when people marry their best friends. Zach hates littering and architecture. And then Zach adds to our folder of recordings of his bathroom breaks.Patrons jump in to ask about managing the stress, whether he’d like his face to be better known, some SleepyCabin info that wasn’t on the podcast, favorite Cartoon Network show and more. This episode really meant a lot to us for so many reasons. Thanks to Zach for coming on to celebrate with us, and thanks to all of you -- and especially Patrons -- who have made 100 episodes of this show possible.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Psychic Pebbles: https://www.youtube.com/user/psychicpebblesApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. The Rise of Jack Manifold [Ep. 99]

No one we’ve talked to has risen so high and so fast as Jack Manifold has in the world of Minecraft streaming. In just a year, he’s gone from a tiny audience to being in the elite tier of Minecraft on Twitch -- and that’s a lot to process for someone so young. And it all started from a hashtag campaign. One of the challenges is a sort of content vs. life balance, and Jack’s got an excellent handle on how to juggle both sides. As he says, when those lines blur too much, you’ve just become an actor. But where does all the energy come from?Kevin’s got some important life advice about toilet paper, and that leads to us discovering an organ transplant we didn’t even know existed. And it’s only the 2nd weirdest thing Kevin’s done, given the incident he describes with hiding a camera in a beanie and creeping around a grocery store. It’s impossible to talk to Jack and not go into the details of the DreamSMP, which might be the most complex, multi-faceted media project online. With all the great characters and storylines, it’s a mix of soap opera, reality show, and video game. The Patrons jump in to ask whether Jack ever got a Whopper, the future of Dream SMP lore, the why’s and how’s of his social media break, the best approach to destructive Stans, how Jack discovered Vsauce, and… his fursona. His big, gross fursona. Thanks to Jack for hanging out with us, and thanks to everyone who showed up to the recording. And the Patrons? You literally make this show happen every single week. Has YouTube Given Up? [Ep. 98]

We’ve gearing up for Jack Manifold TONIGHT at 6pm ET, so we wanted to spend a little time talking Google, YouTube, and TikTok with the TCU Community. VidCon featured creator announcements have rubbed some people the wrong way because they simply don’t recognize anyone on the list -- and that’s in large part due to TikTok’s dominance and sponsorship of VidCon itself. Something is changing here, and it’s important to talk about what that is and what it means. But first, SHIRTS. THE SHIRTS ARE HERE. Tots 20% off, Dumpster Crew 50% off, Infantry/Baby Gang/Creator tier FREEEEE. Links are in the episode, and we’ll be popping it everywhere until the remaining few shirts are gone.YouTube has shut down its Spaces program worldwide. Rewind is dead, Red became Originals and that seems to be wrapping up. What’s happening here?Shorts are great, but they’re pretty much what TikTok is. Did YouTube miss an opportunity when Vine died? Are they playing catch up now? Are they being too conservative as the leader in video? Kevin feels like he’s witnessing the end of an era.Is it possible YouTube took a back seat on VidCon to avoid COVID complications? Yes, it absolutely is -- but late in the episode we find out in real-time that YouTube has taken a GIANT step toward addressing every one of Kevin’s gripes. We wrap up talking about video games, the PS5, Matt almost being arrested accidentally in a casino, and whether we should be nuking Mars. Thanks to everyone who showed up to the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. PhysicsGirl and the Moving Muddle Puddle [Ep. 97]

PhysicsGirl Dianna Cowern is your average Forbes 30 Under 30, award-winning YouTube legend who got her start in a tiny Hawaiian school -- which is to suggest that nothing about Dianna’s impressive career path is any sort of accident. With 2 million subscribers and over 150 million views, Dianna has become one of Science YouTube’s most prolific figures, and she’s inspired a generation of girls to go further in physics. Where would she be without that Neil deGrasse Tyson DVD series?!Dianna had a series of teachers who helped drive her interest in physics, but the key might’ve been her own broad interests from music to tennis. Most everything in her life seems to combine into science communication, and it’s a solid example of ‘System 1 and System 2’ thinking. But then it’s mud puddle time. Dianna made an excellent video showing the world’s only moving mud puddle, which is threatening parts of California en route to the Salton Sea. Is there any hope? Kevin thinks “there’s nothing you can do to stop it.” At 20 feet per year, it’s hard to disagree. And it’s one more example of taking a seemingly-mundane subject and making it amazing, which Dianna does so well. She’s always excited, and part of that is because she’s talking to other people who are excited, too. Like making a cloud in your mouth, getting pumped about the ocean, or paving a way on YouTube for herself and others when there are dozens of reasons to quit. Congratulations to Dianna for getting back to surfing, and thanks to each and every one of our Patrons who make this show happen every week!Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw PhysicsGirl: https://www.youtube.com/user/physicswomanThe Invention of Friends (Dunbar's Number): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2qjRG6iV8MApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Sven Johnson and Hot Dogs [Ep. 96]

Sven Johnson can make anything funny, whether it’s a hot dog or being a moth. We start off by establishing that most people eat an average of 43,000 hot dogs in their lifetime, which seems accurate. So why is a hot dog always funny? The answer shows how unique Sven’s attitude really is, and why his short, quirky jokes work so well. Then a historical sanitation engineering discussion gets heated surrounding the great “urinal boom” of the 20th century and why we suffer the indignity of peeing in a giant trough. But at least it’s not bacon grease.Sven’s been working on comedy for years now, and it happens everywhere from hanging around with his brother Gus to sleeping in such a bizarre position that it activates a sort of out of body experience. Yes, this is real, and it’s happened to Kevin, too.We talk about the difficult workflow of comedy, and start ideas for a co-branded pee jug for everyone’s desk. Patrons jump in to ask about Sven’s music, his relationship with Gus, whether their mom is actually in on their jokes, what would happen if you peeled a banana and found a hot dog… YEAH.Thanks to every single one of our Patrons -- you make this show possible every week. The Homemade Weapons and Mad Genius of Allen Pan [Ep. 95]

Nobody on YouTube lives out Arthur C. Clarke’s rule that, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” quite like Allen Pan. From flame-throwing gloves to recreating some of the most incredible weapons and gadgets in films, Allen can create just about anything. Except a Gundam, which he desperately wants the money to make. Kevin’s not sure if dinosaurs are real, but Allen is convinced that every bit of water on earth is actually very old dinosaur pee. These are the thought experiments we undertake, leading Allen to conclude that if he had the chance, ““I would just reprogram my mind to fly around in a spaceship and experience sexual satisfaction when I made discoveries…. I would fly away and orgasm all over the universe.” I guess everyone needs a plan after YouTybe.Allen’s YouTube channel Sufficiently Advanced is actually the culmination of a long journey through engineering -- and it’s one that led through Mythbusters. Does he wish he’d won the final? Did it work out even better in the end? We establish that Michael Reeves is indeed a “gremlin and a chimp” before launching into galvanic stimulation, anime oversaturation, cat girls ruling the earth, and what it’s like to be on meth for the sake of science. If you aren’t a fan of Allen Pan’s after this episode, you’re hopeless. Thanks to everyone who showed up to hang with us and Allen, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week!OH, AND KEVIN ASKED HIM THE FURRY QUESTION.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Allen Pan: https://www.youtube.com/c/SufficientlyAdvancedmaking people Mad by fixing other YouTuber's Inventions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbBwqxV0DKUApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Captain Disillusion Debunks Himself [Ep. 94]

There’s no more thorough expert at debunking all things visual than Captain Disillusion, and it’s the culmination of his journey from a Cold War-era circus family to the gold standard of YouTube VFX analysis. Alan details his process for debunking and how it fits within the context of internet cynicism and the audience’s need for a story. Should we aspire to be Forrest Gump, or do we really want to know how everything works? Happy and curious is good, and it’s nice to suspend disbelief here and there.Becoming a target of Captain D’s analysis depends in part on intent, and it’s a delicate science that sometimes looks slightly different in hindsight. Occasionally, something is straight up snake oil, and we call for a blend of Content Cop and the Captain. Is Captain Disillusion YouTube’s passion-driven version of Bob Ross? Where did that come from and how did he develop it through his formative years in the Soviet Union? Kevin points out how strongly that passion shows through in Alan’s ‘Flight of the Navigator’ video. Also, Alan’s pretty happy that he’s a “geriatric millennial,” and we launch into a discussion about the culture around him as the Soviet Union entered its final days. Adjustments are a big thing, and coming to the US in middle school is serious business. We talk what’s next for VFXcool, Alan’s favorite old Soviet movies, what it’s like to work with his metallic makeup, and more. And, of course, Conrad asks whether he calls himself Captain D in he bedroom.More people showed up for the live recording than we’ve had for any episode ever -- thanks to everyone who turned out, and especially to the Patrons who make this show possible every single week!Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Captain Disillusion: https://www.youtube.com/user/CaptainDisillusionVFXcool: Flight of the Navigator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyixMpuGEL8Apple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Joe Hanson Can’t Stop Making You Smart [Ep. 93]

Dr. Joe Hanson has made a case to be included on Science YouTube’s Mount Rushmore. It’s partly because he’s engaging and entertaining, but it also might have something to do with that doctorate in cell and molecular biology from UT-Austin. Every day, he’s proving that It’s Okay to Be Smart.Joe went from being a “pipette monkey” in a lab to having a solid presence on Tumblr, of all places. And his transition to YouTube ended up helping to fill that gap between fun kids’ science shows and boring, ultra-high-level programming. Traditional/Legacy media has a long way to go before it catches up to YouTube. A major aspect of YouTube is storytelling, even if it’s factual information. Joe’s thought a lot about what makes new information appealing or what might allow someone to change their mind about a complex issue -- and it’s really about guiding someone through intellectual discomfort. After Kevin’s realizing that we don’t need “Science Popes” and a rousing discussion of what science *really* is… and what it isn’t. Patrons jump in with questions about what it’s like to work for PBS, getting into science content in the first place, Joe’s sips from the fountain of youth, and when it’s a good time to play dumb. Thanks to Dr. Hanson for spending time with all of us in The Create Unknown universe, and a special thanks to the patrons who make this show happen each and every week.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw It's Okay To Be Smart: https://www.youtube.com/c/itsokaytobesmartMr Wizard's a Dick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqpkJ_ey_QEWhy Is Blue So Rare In Nature?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g246c6Bv58The Invention Of Blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIg5HkyauoYApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.
