The Death of YouTube Rewind Means More Than You Think

YouTube Rewind is officially dead after a near-decade run, and it absolutely felt like giving up in Saigon or Afghanistan. It started slow, exploded, and plummeted faster than... anything else we can think of. It's not common to rise to such heights so quickly and then become the #1 most hated thing on the platform, and it's actually quite a feat.Kevin, a veteran of Rewind himself, has serious thoughts on why this happened and what it means for YouTube's commitment to itself and audiences. There's a lot in this one, from community suggestions for replacements to forcing YouTube employees to play Squid Game. Thanks to everyone who joined in on this one, episode chat really drove the show. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Thoughts on Norm Macdonald and Cancelling Comedians

The softest t-shirts ever: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/It might sound simplistic to say that Norm Macdonald was a guy who *loved* jokes, but that actually has pretty deep meaning. Jokes are some of the most complex, intricate, delicate ways we communicate ideas, and Norm Macdonald was one of the best ever. And as legendary as Norm Macdonald was, some people not only don’t get him, but they don’t get humor at all. Seriously.Comedians have a language of joke-telling, and if you don’t understand that language, you’re a lot more likely to be bothered by their humor. What’s that mean for people trying to be funny on YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok? Are they facing an epidemic of cancellation by people who just don’t understand? And for the people who do love and appreciate humor, why do so many of them think it’s so easy? No one would think they could ever be like Lebron James at basketball, but too many people think they’re just as funny as who they see on TV or the internet. It’s delusional, but it’s also kind of understandable. We wanted to remember Norm and give some extra attention to what he’s done for comedy and for the careers of so many people we know, including his best moments (one of which was making Sarah Silverman severely uncomfortable), and then hit some Patron questions ranging from tone markers on internet speech, an IRL episode, and living out a meme. Thanks to everyone who showed up to hang out with us, these episodes really are some of the most enjoyable because we get to talk to you through the whole show. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make each and every episode possible. Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown  Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3JwApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcastsCREDITS:Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt TaborProduced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU"Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/BasswaiteTheme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.comOpening Animation: KidmographCity Animation: Eric Langlay"The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.CONNECT WITH US:» Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw» Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown» Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown» Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown» View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com#TheCreateUnknown #NormMacdonald #Comedy Learn more about your ad choices. Vsauce2 Gets Demonetized

The softest t-shirts ever: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/We’ve talked to a range of creators about their struggles with demonetization, and we’ve always pointed out how nice it is that educational content is safe. Well… not anymore. Kevin’s latest Vsauce2 video about a very public crime in Britain has been smacked down to the point where AdSense doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of editing. Oh, and the video has been totally throttled. So, what’s actually happening here? But we’re not doomers -- we’re not going to dwell on the sucky stuff. The Patrons jump in to ask all sorts of questions, and yes, there’s more crime content in the pipeline. What’s the tagline that sums up the podcast, and why does it end with our most famous burp? Movies. Expired food. Creative fulfillment vs. creative futility. Lots and lots more -- including Kevin’s most devious lick (which is still soggy). Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, and especially to all the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week. Archspire's Dean Lamb on Fast Guitars and Smelly Vans

When Dean Lamb auditioned for Archspire, he didn’t feel that he was good enough to play with the band -- it took him weeks of pure practice to get up to match Archspire’s incredible speed that pushes the boundaries of how fast humans can play music. And now Dean is not only an integral part of Archspire’s success, but he’s got a YouTube channel that’s its own standalone enterprise. He knows how to “Stay Tech,” but what he doesn’t know is how to fix a touring van that doesn’t beep incessantly every 5 minutes.Being an artist is one thing, but a band is a *group* of artists -- and everyone’s weird. Kevin talks to Dean about being in the middle of serious talent with a drummer and lyricist that work their own wizardry. And oddly enough, being a virtuoso may not extend to all genres. What makes Archspire (and Dean) so unique is a blend of death metal and classical principles, which can be heard throughout their albums, all of which are concept albums. They have to be, as each album is a child of acid dreams that are enmeshed in a 3-4 year cycle of playing, recording, and refining. The whole thing is one big metaphor for life as an artist, though. Dean talks about how important it is to scrap things rather than hold on forever, developing a connection to the art, and the sacrifices it takes to actually get a project done -- like going into near-seclusion to focus on completing an album.Patrons jump in to ask about his favorite guitar solo, playing other instruments, recommendations on improving guitar playing, the first song he ever learned, and the future of music in a DMCA era. Thanks to everyone who came out for Kevin’s favorite episode, and a special thanks to each and every Patron who makes this show possible every week.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Dean's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/DeanLambApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media.  CONNECT WITH US: » Chat with us on DISCORD: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw  » Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/createunknown  » Follow us on INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/thecreateunknown  » Follow us on FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/thecreateunknown   » View our website: https://thecreateunknown.com Learn more about your ad choices. The Kino Corner, or 120 Minutes of Salo

When we met The Kino Corner, he was just getting started on YouTube -- and in the years since, he’s become one of the go-to experts on YouTube when it comes to evaluating films. Just... not superhero movies. And there are a few reasons for that, including connected films and a larger ecosystem that affects how individual movies are made.Kino isn’t just a film critic. He’s a filmmaker as well. So who does more work, the creator or the critic? Yes, that’s a real question before we get a recipe for synthetic feces.Kino offers a bit of wisdom about taking criticism and facing rejection, and it's all stuff that everyone listening needs to take to heart. It applies to a lot more than YouTube or films, and there’s too much dwelling on the thought process and too little just sitting down and making something. The Logan Paul hiring hail mary might not be the way to do it, though. But it’s easy to be so negative about these things -- negativity is WAY easier to understand than positivity. Being negative is clear and straightforward; being positive is murky and complex. We talk about Kino’s feature-length film “Wasted Hours” before going into patron questions, including why critics make non-critics feel so bad about liking simple things, what Kino learned by hosting a film festival (congratulations to our own DanTheLatch for winning it), what his inspirations are, and a harrowing depiction of Kino’s fursona. Thanks to everyone who hung out for the live recording, and a special thanks to all the Patrons who keep this show going each and every week. Eternal Sunshine of Hans Van Harken’s Mind

It’s official: Hans Van Harken is one of our favorite guests ever, and it isn’t even because he met Pebbles via Newgrounds when they were both teenagers. When drought hit California, Hans saw a blank canvas on which he could paint a movie. That’s when Mutt and Chopps became a reality.Oh, and it’s incredible, from the writing to the makeup to the cinematography and score. But one of the most remarkable elements is how many genres it seems to combine into one unified thing -- including silent comedy from 100 years ago. Hans detailed his extensive pre-production, which not only helped streamline a complex shoot in difficult conditions, but also allowed for a fantastic result on a budget. And the weird thing is how flexible all that pre-planning actually allowed him to be. Most of us who make videos only really have to think about the basics on visuals, script, and sound, but Hans is on another level. Is Hans a writer? An animator? A comedian? An actor? YES. The more we talk, the easier it is to see why he’s made such a range of incredible content over the last 15 years. It’s also easy to see how his attitude and the social element make talented people want to be friends with him and work with him. Be like Hans.He might even be Kevin’s dad (paternity test forthcoming). In a couple creative decades, he’s picked up perspective on everything from how wild places like Newgrounds work to streaming successfully on Twitch -- but that only took a few weeks. And what’s next? Who knows… there’s a Netflix-style series in his mind, maybe some animation, maybe just making his Friends Smile. But what he *does* know is that it’s not necessary to star front and center. Thanks to Hans, who is definitely NOT Dutch, for spending the episode with us, and ALSO for sticking around for *TWO more hours* hanging out and talking with everyone. And thanks to all the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week. Hans is your reward.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Hans Van Harken: https://www.youtube.com/c/HansVanHarkenMUTT and CHOPS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsn0RxYWBGAMickey's Surprise!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ5wptjuf90Apple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Kyle Hill is Serious About Science

Kyle Hill has a creative track that’s pretty unique -- from graduate study to hosting Mythbusters: The Search, to running Nerdist’s science content for years, and now working on his own project, The Facility. He started in the skeptic community debunking bad science information, and eventually started playing around with Chernobyl and superheroes. But how do you figure out when it’s time to intervene? And when you do, who exactly are you? Are you YOU, or are you a specific persona unique to your channel? Kevin’s talked about this in the past -- where Vsauce2 ends and Kevin begins -- and it’s something creators of all kinds face.Has Kyle Hill ever gotten it wrong? Has he done any harm inadvertently? Probably not, but it’s worth asking. In Kyle’s view, some YouTubers just aren’t that responsible, and he’s got a few safety concerns.Nerd stuff has dominated the culture for several years now, but we want to know where Kyle thinks it’s headed. Is Marvel and superhero cultured oversaturated? And why did Avatar drop off the cultural map?Patrons jump into probe Kyle about sticking your head in a particle accelerator, whether Kyle’s actually a viking, what he’s hiding about the REAL Kyle, and who should be careful starting their car. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live episode, and thanks to Kyle for using some of his vacation time from The Facility.Patreon: https://patreon.com/thecreateunknown   Join our Discord to talk with artists, creators, and fans of the finer things in online life: https://discord.gg/qAQV3Jw Kyle Hill: https://www.youtube.com/c/KyleHillScienceApple: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownAppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownSpotifyGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheCreateUnknownGooglePodcasts CREDITS:  Hosts: Kevin Lieber and Matt Tabor Produced and Edited by Ben Webster → https://twitter.com/benwebsterTCU "Created in the Unknown" theme by Basswaite: https://linktr.ee/Basswaite  Theme by Mega Drive → http://megadrivemusic.com  Opening Animation: Kidmograph City Animation: Eric Langlay  "The Create Unknown" is produced by Unknown Media. Marques Brownlee Does Everything. EVERYTHING.

Marques Brownlee may very well be the top YouTuber of the last decade -- so of course, Kevin wants to distill his life force into a sippable drink. Between well over 1,000 videos, a new Studio channel, a successful podcast, and a YouTube Original series -- oh, and being a professional athlete -- how does he actually do it all? Seriously, does he sleep? It really is important to take care of yourself, and basic things like sleep and food go a long way. And creatives don’t think nearly enough about how important exercise is to the art. Like it or not, it matters, and Marques is living proof.Even so, how does he stave off the burnout that’s so prevalent in the community? If anyone should get burned out, it’s Marques, and he’s in a great place -- including expanding by involving his whole team in the Studio project through Vox.You’d think he’d get recognized everywhere he goes, including playing ultimate frisbee, but it seems that his car might be the real celebrity. But what’s the deal with people being embarrassed and awkward about saying how they know him? Why is this a thing?!We learn quite a lot about the limits of practical, pervasive technology like automatic paper towel dispensers and the little hand-recognition beams on faucets -- which aren’t nearly as good as we thought. We’ve got serious limits to technology, and that includes updating the classic flip phone.Patrons were excited to throw a litany of questions at Marques, from the Tesla Plaid and his actual use of retro tech to ideas for future series, co-starring with Danny DeVito, and The Haunting Legacy of Will Smith. Thanks to Marques for taking the time to talk with us -- it was absolutely worth the wait -- and to everyone who showed up for a raucous live recording. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Slimecicle: The Meat in Our Chuckle Sandwich

Slimecicle is here to complete our Chuckle Sandwich trifecta, and we start with a hard-to-answer “would you rather?” and wise words about love. But he and the CS boys are doing quite well with their podcast, which is pretty rare in a world of supergroup e-projects that almost never seem to last. What are they doing right? What makes it toughest is dealing with the ‘reactionary brain’ of the YouTuber, and that’s even harder now that we’re past the simpler days of ElderTube. We talk about the importance of the ‘production mindset,’ and it’s no accident that Slimecicle has a fair amount of experience. When you think of discipline, scheduling, and professionalism, THINK SLIMECICLE.The paradox of the youngest creators sometimes being more mature about the process is worth talking about -- as Jack Manifold and TommyInnit pave the way compared to the clueless teens of a decade ago. That’s almost as important as the origin of the guinea pig in the wild, and whether Slimecicle could orally medicate Schlatt. Then it’s on to Paris Syndrome and Jerusalem Syndrome, both of which are very, very real -- but not as real as Charlie’s hate for cereal. We have a cereal problem, a food theft problem, a corn and bean and hand soap problem… and then Patron questions about egg supremacy, what a Slimecicle tastes like, and why Charlie desperately wants to be a rag doll flung into the ether. Thanks to everyone who came out for our best-attended live show so far -- and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. 3 Hours of Furries and Jenkum with Mutahar

We’ve never had an episode quite like this one -- Mutahar’s got a lot to talk about, and there’s nothing ordinary about him. Chris-Chan? Blizzard’s “Bill Cosby Suite?” His desperate wish to go to a furry convention’s “after party” before he dies? Yeah, for better or worse, it’s all here.We start by speculating on what’s going to get Muta cancelled in 7 years and what on earth is going on with everyone else’s bad behavior. And we’d like to see the solid creators rewarded a bit more by YouTube, but right now everyone’s still talking about EDP, MiniLadd, and other high profile problems.Muta tells us the easiest part of his day before diving into the balance between entertainment and discussing terrible things. It’s a very serious question and one that many commentators are dealing with right now. Where do we draw the line on the subject matter of controversial memes? We spent a bit of time talking about the ‘Save the Kids’ crypto scam that Muta and TCU alumnus Coffeezilla led the charge on before kicking around the bizarreness of the new wave of NFTs. With everything looking so grim, is there ANYTHING on YouTube that’s still pure? Yes, there’s one thing…Kevin admits to have learned a great deal through these discussions, including how Muta might get married at BronyCon. And we worry about Producer Ben having to attach this whole episode to his CV. Patrons jump in to ask about influencing content on YouTube, $Zilla, the NBA’s NFTs, why Dr. Phil is Muta’s hero, and one of the longest, most detailed answers to the fursona question that TCU has ever received. This is our longest episode ever, and thanks to all the people who stuck around for all of its glory during the live recording.
