VAGINAL Health in midlife and beyond: Let’s start a conversation with Dr Fariba Behnia-Willison

Common Women's Health Issues: - Menopause-related symptoms, such as hot flashes, low libido, vaginal dryness, incontinence, and prolapse, are addressed. - Fariba stresses the importance of proactive care, providing practical tips for maintaining vaginal health. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM):  Affects 50% of women by age 60 and 75% by age 70. GSM refers to vaginal, bladder, and pelvic floor symptoms associated with low estrogen levels. Symptoms include vaginal dryness, loss of lubrication, burning, pain, irritation, fissuring in the vulva, pain or bleeding during sex, painful urination, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder urgency, stress incontinence, loss of libido, arousal, or orgasm, and vaginal wall prolapse. Taking Charge of Vaginal Health: - Fariba provides important recommendations for self-care, including avoiding harmful practices like wearing G-strings and polyester pants. - Chemical exposure reduction and adopting a healthy diet are also key factors in maintaining vaginal health. - Proper use of antibiotics and the significance of probiotics for a balanced vaginal microbiome are highlighted. PRP in Gynaecology - Fariba shares her first encounter with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in gynaecology and its use in various specialties. - The controversy surrounding PRP is highlighted, emphasising the need for further research. - Patient education is essential, providing them with the pros and cons to make informed decisions.
