SPOS #895 – Michael Geist On Meta Blocking News Links And The Future Of Media
Welcome to episode #895 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #895. When it comes to the digital economy, the law and the media, everyone should be following Dr. Michael Geist. Now, more than ever, his voice may be the only "truth" we are seeing in the media as Canada deals with the massive fallout that is Bill C-18 (Canada's Online News Act). My primer on this ridiculous law is here: Big Tech, Big Media, Big Trouble And Big Lies. With that, the issues (and opportunity) bleed well beyond the borders of Canada and should strike fear into anyone interested in our global digital economy. For a long while, Michael has been reshaping the landscape of Internet and E-commerce Law from his academic pulpit at the University of Ottawa. With credentials that read like an academic's dream — degrees from Osgoode Hall, Cambridge, and Columbia — he's not just dissecting law... he's writing it, in real-time, for a digital age. You've likely stumbled upon his incisive columns, where he distills complex technology law issues into digestible wisdom. But wait, there's more. Michael is the maestro behind a slew of copyright books that are nothing short of revolutionary. Titles like, The Copyright Pentalogy, and, In the Public Interest, are shaking the foundations of Canadian copyright law, carving out a new roadmap for the digital era. He's not just penning books... he's also editing monthly technology law publications and running a blog that's become a go-to resource on Internet and intellectual property issues. Michael's reach isn't confined to academia or print... he's a boardroom staple too. Whether it's Ingenium, Internet Archive Canada, or the Electronic Frontier Foundation, his advisory skills are in high demand. He's even steering the digital strategy for Waterfront Toronto, leading it into uncharted technological waters. His influence is such that he was named among the 50 most impactful people on intellectual property globally and among the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada, multiple years running. Why does Michael matter? Because in a world wrestling with the ethics and laws of a digital frontier, he's the sage we didn't know we needed, but can't afford to ignore. We dig deep into the media landscape, the mis-step of the government, why Meta proactively decided to no longer allow users to post links out to news websites, and why everyone (no matter where you live) should be paying attention to what Meta, Google and others technology companies are doing. Journalist, media executive and author, Joanne Lipman, is back with a great new book, Next! - The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work (many know her from her previous effort, That's What She Said). Joanne is revered for her innovative leadership across various high-profile media institutions, including USA Today, USA Today Network, Conde Nast Portfolio, and The Wall Street Journal's Weekend Journal. Her editorial acumen has guided these organizations to earn a total of six Pulitzer Prizes. Starting her career as a reporter at The Wall Street Journal, Joanne shattered glass ceilings to become the first woman Deputy Managing Editor. During her tenure, she orchestrated the creation of Weekend Journal and Personal Journal, leading coverage that garnered three Pulitzer Prizes. Further solidifying her "star editor" reputation, as termed by CNN, Joanne was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Conde Nast Portfolio (which was a great business magazine), winning National Magazine and Loeb Awards. In 2015, Lipman achieved another milestone by becoming Gannett's first Chief Content Officer. As the Editor-in-Chief of USA Today and USA Today Network, she skillfully managed over 3,000 journalists across 109 metro newspapers, including the Detroit Free Press and the Arizona Republic. Under her leadership, the network clinched three additional Pulitzer Prizes. Beyond her editorial roles, Joanne is an accomplished speaker, television commentator, and an on-air contributor at CNBC. She shares her vast journalistic experience as a lecturer at Yale University and has been honored as the inaugural Distinguished Journalism Fellow at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. She has also co-authored the highly praised musical memoir, Strings Attached. Her vast accomplishments aptly justify The New York Times' portrayal of her as the "innovator in chief." SPOS #890 – Pico Iyer On The Search For Paradise, Solitude And Society
Welcome to episode #890 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #890. I often think of Pico Iyer. It could be while I travel... it could be while we were in Covid lockdown. His words truly resonate with me on a very deep level. Pico is an acclaimed wordsmith who began his journey in Oxford, England. With the King’s Scholarship at Eton and a Demyship at Magdalen College, Oxford in his kitty, Pico's academic prowess earned him a Congratulatory Double First and the highest accolades in English Literature. In 1980, he joined the teaching fraternity at Harvard, earning a second Master's degree and an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters. Since 1982, Pico has delved into full-time writing, weaving tales on diverse subjects from the Dalai Lama (a personal friend of his) to Islamic mysticism, and from the Cuban Revolution to globalism. His body of work encompasses over 15 books, including enduring bestsellers such as, Video Night in Kathmandu, The Lady and the Monk, and The Art of Stillness. These literary gems have been translated into over 20 languages, amplifying his voice across the globe. Besides his own titles, Pico has penned introductions for over 70 other books, composed a screenplay for Miramax, and written a libretto. Complementing his book writing, Pico has contributed upwards of 100 articles annually to international publications such as Time, The New York Times, and the Financial Times. His knack for insightful storytelling has led him to the TED stage (which is where we first met and connected), where his four talks have garnered more than 10 million views. Pico's life beautifully balances between solitude and society. Since 1992, he has divided his time between a Benedictine hermitage in Big Sur, California, a sanctuary that nurtures his craft, and suburban Japan, where he engages with the rhythm of daily life. His journey underscores the harmonious fusion of stillness and movement, solitude and engagement - a fitting testimony to the art he so eloquently writes about. His latest book, The Half Known Life - In Search Of Paradise, is one that I read with stillness and slowness... like a fine wine. Paradise is many things to many people, and this book is an incredible journey to uncover it. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:71:52. Hello from beautiful Montreal. SPOS #889 – Kevin Kelly On Tech, Optimism And Living Well
Welcome to episode #889 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #889. Let's delve into the kaleidoscopic journey of Kevin Kelly, a titan of technology and innovation, who launched Wired magazine in 1993 (and happens to be one of my favorite writers and Thinkers about "what's next?"). After seven years as Executive Editor, he still holds the fort as Senior Maverick. Twice during his reign, Wired clinched the National Magazine Awards for General Excellence - the magazine industry's equivalent to Oscars. Flashback to 1984-1990, Kevin wore the hats of both publisher and editor of Whole Earth Review, a journal serving unconventional conceptual news. With Kevin at the helm, it earned the distinction of being the first consumer magazine to cover virtual reality, ecological restoration, and Internet culture, among other trend-setting topics. His 1988 creation, Signal, evaluated emerging digital technologies, effectively setting the stage for Wired magazine. Later, in 2003, he crafted the Cool Tools website to feature daily tool reviews, culminating in a bestseller book, and eventually, the weekly recommendation list, Recomendo, boasting over 60,000 subscribers (of which I am one... and never miss an issue). Kevin's early digital footprint can be traced back to 1985 when he helped lay the foundation for The WELL, one of the pioneers in forming online communities. His tech experiments didn't stop there - he launched Cyberthon in 1990, the first-ever 24-hour virtual reality event, and co-founded the annual Hackers' Conference. Kevin's pen dances across a variety of subjects, from machines turning biological (Out of Control, 1994) to digital economy rules (New Rules for the New Economy, 1998) and the inevitable technological trends of the future (The Inevitable, 2016). His works echo in pieces like 1000 True Fans, and his latest book, Excellent Advice For Living. With a knack for photography, Kevin's snapshots have found home in Life and other national magazines. His nomadic photography journeys culminated in a 3-volume magnum opus, Vanishing Asia, preserving the fading cultures of Asia through 9,000 pictures. As a founding board member of The Long Now Foundation, Kevin promotes long-term thinking, epitomized by their 10,000-year clock and library project. Kevin Kelly's journey illustrates a passion for innovation and an unyielding curiosity about the future. I couldn't be more excited to talk with him. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:01:49. Welcome to episode #888 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #888. It always exciting to have Adam Alter back on the show. Adam is the scholarly sherpa navigating the neural networks of New York University's Stern School of Business. As an acclaimed Professor of Marketing and Robert Stansky Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow, he finds his second academic home in NYU's Psychology Department. Adam, however, is not confined to the halls of academia. He’s also a celebrated author whose ink has graced the pages of three bestsellers, exploring the compelling world of behavioral addiction, subconscious influences and how to get unstuck. In his book Irresistible, Adam delves into our modern-day addiction epidemic, examining the compulsive behaviors attached to our smartphones, the internet, video games, and online shopping. Meanwhile, Drunk Tank Pink peels back the layers of our environment, unveiling the hidden forces that shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Adam's genius lies in his unique approach to social psychology and decision-making. He shines a spotlight on the surprising impacts of subtle environmental cues on human cognition and behavior. His fascinating findings have claimed their space in numerous academic journals and media outlets worldwide. His latest book (which I devoured), Anatomy of a Breakthrough, promises to free us from the shackles of our mind's inertia. Whether it’s a midlife crisis, writer's block, or a stagnant job, we all face friction that stymies our growth. But Adam's solution, the friction audit, could be the key to unlocking our full potential. By conquering friction in our heart (emotions), head (thoughts), and habit (behaviors), we can course-correct our journey to success. Through this brilliant blend of scientific research, personal stories, and inspiring examples, Adam reassures us: getting stuck is not a glitch, but a feature on the road to thriving. With the right strategies, we can all reach our loftiest goals. So, are you ready to break free? Before we do, I'm also honored that Adam is one of our Thinkers on the ThinkersOne platform.
