Play Hard To Get (and other bad relationship advice)

Play hard to get.  If you’re in the world of dating, or were at some point in your life — you’ve definitely heard the relationship advice that tells you to play hard to get. Don’t look too interested.  Don’t call for at least 3 days.  Make sure they don’t know how much you like them.  Don’t text back right away.  But is this relationship advice any good? Play Hard To Get There’s a reason why this is common relationship advice. We want to play the game of relationships, and make ourselves feel like we’re in control rather than feeling like someone is in control of us. But there are two major problems that the “play hard to get” mentality creates in relationships.  Today on the podcast, I’m explaining both of those problems and why this is actually BAD relationship advice, and what you should do instead. Don’t be fooled by the play hard to get game…because you’re going to end up losing in the end. Marriage Should Make You Happy (and other bad relationship advice) with Gary Thomas

Marriage should make you happy. That’s the relationship advice we hear all the time. But is it even true? How much weight do we need to put on our happiness? What is the secret ingredient to creating happiness in marriage? Does happiness create a good marriage, or does a good marriage create happiness? And what happens when you’re not happy? Is it even realistic to say we’re going to be happy all the time in marriage?  We need to take the time to evaluate this relationship advice, and make sure we’re questioning it and seeing it for what it’s worth. Marriage Should Make You Happy — or Should It? Today, my friend, pastor, and bestselling author of Sacred Marriage, Gary Thomas, helps me tackle this important bad relationship advice, because it’s advice that’s hurting many marriages. We’re going to take a look at both scripture and psychology and get to the root of this bad relationship advice, and offer you a BETTER perspective — a perspective that helps us look at holiness before we look at happiness. You’ll Just Know When You Meet The Right Person (and other bad relationship advice)

You’ll “just know” When You Meet The Right Person…that’s what they try and tell you. “You lock eyes, as you glance across the room at each other. And all of a sudden, somehow, you just know.” The worst relationship advice I’ve ever heard comes from the people who tell you you’ll just know when you meet the person you’re going to marry. It’s a cookie cutter formula that can’t — and shouldn’t — be applied to all relationships. It’s caused a lot of confusion along the way, and caused many people to pass up very good relationships because they were expecting some sort of an intense feeling or instant knowledge when the right person came along. You’ll Just Know? In today’s episode I share my personal experience with this bad relationship advice (because I TOTALLY DID NOT JUST KNOW!!!) and then I offer a counter perspective to help you navigate this important area of your life, because there ARE some important things to look for in looking for love…but it doesn’t just happen at first glance. Women Should Not Initiate (and other bad relationship advice)

When it comes to relationships, have you ever heard the phrase, “women should not initiate”? This is all too common advice, and unfortunately, it’s advice that comes with a lot of controversy as well as negative repercussion. So should women initiate? And what does that look like in dating, as well as in marriage? The bad relationship advice series continues at TrueLoveDates.com by unpacking this relationship advice and why it can actually wreak havoc on your relationship in the long run.  Should Women Initiate? I’m joined by my friend and author, Phylicia Masonheimer, as we tag-team this important subject. Both Phylicia and I heard and applied this bad relationship advice that women should not initiate at different points in our lives, and in this episode we each unpack how it impacted our respective marriages, discuss why we think this is bad advice, and then offer you a healthier alternative to relationships.  If you’re a woman who has ever wondered about a woman initiating in a relationship, or if you’re a man who has ever had questions about this topic, you don’t want to miss this candid episode that’s not only grounded in psychology, but in biblical truth.  Tune in to Episode 68 of the Love + Relationships Podcast and subscribe to the show by clicking on the button below! A Single’s Guide To Thriving In Quarantine

I’ve heard from so many singles over the past few weeks who are struggling and looking for some encouragement as they navigate this time of social distancing and quarantine. So I invited my single friend, Lisa Anderson, to join me as we discuss ways to thrive during this hard time. Lisa is the director of the young adults ministry of Focus on the Family called Boundless, and she is a single woman who I consider as one who is THRIVING in what God has called her to do. In this important episode, we cover: How to deal with the isolation that comes during this time. What to practically do with your unmet need for physical touch. Why accountability is important during this time. How to infuse meaning and purpose during this time. How to get your emotional needs met right now. And so many other amazing tips, advice, and encouragement for singles! If you’re single, or know someone who is, I invite you to tune in to this bonus episode of the Love + Relationships Podcast, and ask God to open your heart to what He is doing around you and through you during this time. Just Wait on God (and other bad relationship advice)

“You just need to wait on God to bring you a relationship.” If you’re single, there’s a good chance you’ve heard that advice at some point along the way. The problem is that what it means to “wait on God” often get’s misinterpreted into meaning that you should DO NOTHING.  Too many singles are on the side of the spectrum of passivity when it comes to their relationships, because they have been taught that waiting on God means you do less and trust God more.  In today’s episode, I’m unpacking why I think this is “bad advice” and what waiting on God should look and feel like when it comes to our romantic relationships. How do you wait on God, yet still continue to pursue your heart’s desire for relationships? Is waiting a God an action, or a place of the heart?  That’s what we’re talking about today!! I love this episode so much, and especially because I’m joined by my friend Kait Warman, an amazing woman with a heart for singles and healthy dating, and who is currently living the single life!! I know this episode will challenge and encourage you, so be sure to tune in! Also, after you listen to this episode, make sure to check out our upcoming singles mixer for people in their 20s! Married Couples Need A Weekly Date Night Out (and other bad relationship advice)

Married couples need a weekly date night out…you’ve heard that advice before, but is it good advice? The answer might surprise you!! We’re starting the bad relationship advice series here at TrueLoveDates.com!!! In this series, I’m bringing you all the BAD relationship advice that you’ve heard over the years, and maybe you even thought it was GOOD advice, but it’s advice that’s actually harmful and even ruining relationships. The first bad relationship advice we’re starting with is so APPLICABLE for today!! I recorded this episode LONG before Corona Quarantine, and here we are, stuck at home, unable to go anywhere even if we WANT TO. Date night out is impossible!! So what do we do? DATE NIGHT IN NOT DATE NIGHT OUT The relationship advice that “couples need a weekly date night out” isn’t just unlikely right now, it’s impossible. If the health of our marriage hinged on our weekly date nights out, we’d be done for right now….and so would marriages across the country. We can’t actually go on a date night out right now anyway, but we can do something even better for our marriage — we can go IN. Healthy marriages don’t hinge on going out, but on going IN. Connecting with one another on a deep and meaningful way. In today’s episode I’m going to tell you what it means to “go in” in your relationship. Also, after you listen to this episode, make sure to tune in to 10 Date Night In Ideas….hopefully they inspire you to take the time to go in with your relationship! Quarantine Ep. 4: “Social Distancing” from Toxic People with Gary Thomas

There are toxic people everywhere. In churches, schools, at work, and sometimes right in the middle of your own household. And it’s important to understand that fact because relationships have the power to bring life, or death. They have the power to lift you up, or bring you down. Right now in our country, the word “social distancing” is being used very liberally to help set boundaries with our physical space, decreasing our chances of getting the Corona Virus. But what if we were to use this time to take inventory of all our relationships, and which ones we need to continue investing in, as well as which ones we need to set boundaries with? Because one day, the Corona Virus pandemic will slow down, and we will go back to life as usual. We’ve got to make choices about who we allow into our life and who we don’t. So let me remind you: some toxic people are worthy of social distancing, whether we’re in quarantine or not. Toxic People Today on the podcast, I’m joined by my friend and pastor/author Gary Thomas. In today’s episode we’re sharing: What defines a toxic person? What does the bible say about setting boundaries with toxic people? How did Jesus model walking away from toxic people? What are some practical ways we can set boundaries with toxic people? Tune in to Quarantine Episode #4 of the Love + Relationships Podcast and subscribe to the show by clicking on the button below!
