Fiona Longmuir on teacher workforce, workload and wellbeing

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Fiona Longmuir. Fiona is a Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. She is also co-leader of the Education Workforce for the Future Research Impact Lab. Her most recent projects have focused on examining working conditions for educators. In other research Fiona has investigated interactions of school and system leadership with student engagement and agency; the emotional labour of school leadership; leading schools through crises; and, leading for social cohesion and social justice. She publishes on topics of leading schools in complex contexts, teachers working conditions and teacher retention, accountability, policy enactment and student agency in school change. Fiona teaches in the Master of Educational Leadership in units focused on social justice and leading educational change and contributes to leadership programs for international school and system leaders. She previously worked for over 15 years for the Victorian Department of Education and Training as a primary school teacher, curriculum and school leader, and leader of school networks. Fiona is a Victorian Fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders. Karen Spiller on leadership and governance in schools

For 23 years, Karen was Principal of two schools in Queensland: St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School and John Paul College. She has also been the Chair of the national bodies the Association of Heads of Independent Schools, Australia and the Alliance of Girls Schools, Australasia. Karen was a member of the Board of Independent Schools Australia and Yalari and was Chair of The Board of Independent Schools Queensland for six years. Karen was a member of the St Laurence’s College Board for five years and is now a member of the Sisters of the Sacred Advent Trust - the governing body that oversees St Aidan’s and St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ Schools. She is also a member of the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools Australia Commission and remains a member of QUT Council as well as a member of the Finance and Planning subcommittee of the Council. Glenn is a policy sociologist, leading researcher and public commentator on education policy and reform. Yong Zhao on all things education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Yong Zhao about teaching, curriculum, schooling, educational leadership, and schools within schools. Yong is a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of Kansas and a professor in Educational Leadership at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education in Australia. He previously served as the Presidential Chair, Associate Dean, and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he was also a Professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. Prior to Oregon, Yong Zhao was University Distinguished Professor at the College of Education, Michigan State University, where he also served as the founding director of the Center for Teaching and Technology, executive director of the Confucius Institute, as well as the US-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Education and a fellow of the International Academy of Education.
