The PoliticsGirl Podcast
Meidas Media Network, Leigh McGowan
American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The Politics Girl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo

Candidate Conversations with Lt. Col. Brian Bengs, Democratic candidate for Senator for South Dakota
Today’s our first extra pod leading up to the midterms and I’m thrilled to have it be with Senatorial candidate for South Dakota Brian Bengs. And you might think, a Democrat in South Dakota? Whaaaat? But, yes, we have to stop ceding rural territories and states to Republicans. The heartland used to be a stronghold for the Democrats, but there’s been a growing, and perhaps self fulfilling, belief that the Democratic Party can’t compete in rural America, and that’s just not true. South Dakota might be a red state, but Brian, JAG lawyer, professor and career veteran of both the US Navy & the Air Force is truly resonating with the people of his state. Polling and surveys shows that when voters are presented with head to head profiles between Bengs & current Senator John Thune, Bengs wins every time. We just need to give him the support to make sure people see him as a real contender. What’s at Stake November 8th - PG:CC with NARAL: Pro-Choice America’s Mini Timmaraju
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Mini Timmaraju, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, here to remind us what is at stake in the midterm elections, not just for reproductive freedoms and rights of women in this country, but the very foundation of freedom and democracy itself. Mini joined NARAL having worked for the Biden-Harris Administration, served as the National Women’s Vote Director for the Hillary Clinton campaign, and played many essential roles at Planned Parenthood. Mini has over 20 years experience leading all levels of political campaigns and advocacy efforts around reproductive rights, gender and racial justice so she knows what’s on the line on November 8th. Plus, she’s flippin’ marvelous. You’ll just love her and feel very relieved she’s in charge of keeping our representatives accountable in congress. It literally doesn’t matter if you’ve never voted before, you have to now. We have to say loud and clear that this has all gone too far, and we have to say it by the millions at the ballot box.Guest social:https://www.prochoiceamerica.org/Text NARAL to 59791 to join their SMS texting list!Twitter: @mintimmTwitter: @NARALTwitter: @PPactInsta: prochoiceamericaLink Tree: https://linktr.ee/naralca Please RATE and SUBSCRIBE so we can grow the show, open the dialogue, and inspire change moving forward! Candidate Conversations with Brad Pfaff (WI-03) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03)
Today’s episode is part of the Candidate Conversation series leading up to the midterms, where we talk to candidates from across the country whose victories are absolutely essential to the success of American democracy. Today’s podcast will be with 2 Democratic candidates running for the 3rd districts of their states. Brad Pfaff from Wisconsin and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez from Washington. Both candidates have deep ties to their rural communities and are running against MAGA ringers brought into their districts, not to represent the people, but to represent the worst of Republican extremism. These two congressional races are must wins. Brad to keep a seat blue, and Marie to flip one. This podcast is not only worth your time, but these candidates are worth your support. As always this is not just an episode about two candidates, but about the bigger idea of democracy and what it represents. We’re in a battle for the soul of the nation and these soldiers need our help. The Good Karen PG:CC with LA Mayoral Candidate Congresswoman Karen Bass
Today’s podcast is a conversation with Karen Bass, Congresswoman for California’s 37th district, former California assemblywoman, and current candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles. And you might think, “Ok I don’t live in Los Angeles so why should I care?” You should care because Los Angeles is the second biggest city in the US, and California is the state with the largest population. So, the things that happen here, end up being the beta test for things that happen across the country. What Karen Bassimplements in Los Angeles, for homelessness or crime, if successful, will no doubt find their way to other cities and states across the nation, and could be the bellwether for federal legislation. You should also care because Karen is running against a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The newest way Republicans are trying to undermine the electorate is to trick them into voting for someone who presents themselves as one thing but is actually another. Rick Caruso is that candidate, a lifelong Republican billionaire who switched his party affiliation to Democrat just 3 weeks before declaring his candidacy for mayor. He’s already spent $60 million dollars of his own money trying to buy his way into the job. This is something as an electorate we should not only be aware of, but watch out for in other places. Our democracy should not be for sale and we should be putting people in positions of power who want to serve the people not enrich themselves. We went to the White House!! PG:CC with Brett & Jordy Meiselas
For a political nerd like me being invited to the White House is like going to the Super Bowl. I was thrilled to be there, but even more excited to see the genuine passion the Biden Administration has for the country and its people. This is why I do what I do. To help people who care about the country, and to make sure that list of people grows every day. Today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with two of the three founders of the Meidas Media Network, Brett & Jordy Meiselas, who were also at the White House this week to celebrate and discuss the successes of the Inflation Reduction Act with other social media influencers. This was an impressive group of people listening to an impressive group of people and if we take anything away from this experience, it’s that the future of media is going to look quite different than the past, this Administration is the real deal, and it’s essential we keep them, and their party, in power. Candidate Conversations with Christy Smith (CA-27) and Dr. Annie Andrews (SC-1)
We are starting a new series leading up to the midterms called Candidate Conversations, where we chat with candidates from across the country to highlight races and people that you might not be as familiar with, but whose victories are essential and need your support. Today’s podcast will be split into individual conversations with 2 amazing Democratic congressional candidates, Christy Smith from California’s 27th congressional district, and Dr. Annie Andrews from South Carolina’s 1st. Both women are running in flippable districts where there is currently a Republican incumbent, and with the right support both candidates can, and will, turn these seats blue. Absolutely worth the listen and definitely worth the support. We talk about way more than just their districts. It’s a conversation about democracy, human rights and what it means to be an American representative. Reproductive Freedom - PG:CC with Planned Parenthood’s Alexis McGill Johnson
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Alexis McGill Johnson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood. We are living at volatile time in American history. One entire party is hellbent on taking us backward into the worst parts of our country’s past filled with racism, homophobia, inequality and the subjugation of women. Since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, every day is a new affront to the value of women and those who require reproductive rights in our society. Every day comes with a fresh new story of archaic, backward laws and the trauma of the real people who have to live under these laws. Being female in America has never been easy, but with THIS Republican Party and THIS supreme court our lives, and the lives of those who can give birth, have become the newest cannon fodder in the culture wars. Union Strong! PG:CC with Mike Monroe
Today’s podcast is a candid conversation with Mike Monroe, the Chief of Staff to North America’s Building Trades Unions, a labor organization representing more than 3 million construction workers, composed of 14 national and international unions. Prior to joining NABTU, Mike served as the Political Director for Labor on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential Campaign, and is a passionate and successful advocate for the Labor Movement in America. The pandemic really opened our eyes to the essential nature of the workers of America, and how great the divide is between those who own the corporations and those who work for them. However, with the combined efforts of unions to represent the people, and a government that respects and supports the importance of unions, we can truly begin to reverse the ever widening gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” in this country. America doesn’t need to be like this. We must grow our middle class again, and to do that we need to look to the power of organized labor and the resurgence of the respect for the American worker. Justice Begins - PG: CC with Teri Kanefield
When we last had Teri Kanefield on the show she was reminding us that just because we weren’t seeing the results we wanted didn’t mean the wheels of justice weren’t turning. People wanted so badly for the DOJ to tell us they were investigating Trump, for Trump to be arrested, for RESULTS, but Teri has always believed that the fact that we were seeing so little, was good news for the health of the rule of law. She’s always stressed how important it is to not rush the process or abandon the rules simply because we wanted to. That one party has made it very clear they’re ready to abandon democracy and the rule of law and Teri has been equally clear we shouldn’t help them do that by abandoning the rule of law ourselves. 5 months later, after the search of Mar-a-lago we can see she was right when so many others were wrong. That Merrick Garland has been working diligently all this time and that justice might be finally on its way. The Psychology of America - PG:CC with Nick Carmody
Today’s pod is a candid conversation with Nick Carmody, psychotherapist, lawyer, and Executive Board Member for the World Mental Health Coalition. Nick uses his psychology expertise to look at politics and how politics affects the personality of the country. If there’s already political science, Nick believes there should be political psychology. We talk about what’s going on with the Republican Party, Trumpism, and the recent search of Mar-a-lago from a psychological perspective, and we discuss about how the cult of personality has transformed individuals into a tribe who seem almost pathologically devoted to Trump and Trumpism no matter how much damage they do to themselves or the country.
