In this salty talk Robb and Diana unpack George Monbiot's recent Guardian piece in which he claims that the literally WORST food that humans can produce is….wait for it….pastured, organic meat. Yes, worse than monocropping, worse than round up and synthetic fertilizer, pastured meat is, in Monbiot's eyes, the worst. We also looked at a recent Mathew Crawford piece that considers director and Hollywood bigwig, James Cameron's efforts to run organic farms in New Zealand. Cameron has invested tens of millions of dollars into various meat alternative projects and is unabashedly anti-meat. Well, Cameron's farms were failing until he did this one weird trick….tune into the episode to discover the ironic punchline to that story! Gut Microbiome With No Colon And Daily Antibiotics , Queasy While Running | THRR121

Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: CDC (quietly) removes a massive claim on vaccine safety Podcast Questions:   1. Gut microbiome & antibiotics [36:36] Alex says Hi Robb! I’ve heard you talk about the importance of a healthy gut microbiome and the impact it has on other areas of the body (mental health, etc). I wanted to get your opinion on potential solutions for promoting a healthy gut microbiome in less than ideal circumstances. I have ulcerative colitis and I’ve had my colon removed as well as some of my small intestine, I have been on antibiotics and steroids daily for about 1.5 years to deal with ongoing inflammation issues. I assume that the antibiotics wipe out any good gut bacteria I have on a daily basis, and I struggle to get any answers from my medical team on what I can do to maintain any sort of good gut bacteria. I’ve tried probiotics, but assume they’re counteracted by the antibiotics. Any suggestions or resources you think may help? Thanks for all you do! Alex Prescribing an antibiotic? Pair it with probiotics Saccharomyces boulardii to Prevent Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea: A Randomized, Double-Masked, Placebo-Controlled Trial 2. Queasy running [48:12] Eric says: Hi Robb - my wife and I are huge fans and she suggested I write to see if you had any thoughts on this. I’ve been an athlete my entire life and always a runner. Lately I’ve experienced nausea about a mile into my runs. I’m not running hard, in fact it’s really just as I’m getting warmed up. I’m breathing harder, but not like race-hard - if that makes sense. We are huge LMNT fans and I consistently consume at least 6000mg of sodium daily. Particularly in the summer heat. I don’t experience this any other time other than when I start to run. If I stop for a few min, the feeling generally passes and I can go on with my run. I’ve looked at what I’m eating prior to my runs and (1) nothing has really changed, even though this feeling is relatively recent and (2) I don’t see anything that I think would make me nauseous. I’m a pretty consistent and clean eater. Could this be an electrolyte issue?? For reference: I’m 5’9” 165lbs, lean/muscular. We eat low carb (my wife follows Dr Bernstein) so I eat similarly but include dairy & berries Would greatly appreciate any thoughts you might have on what could be causing this. Relationship-Ending Gas, Kidney Stones | THRR120

They saw 300% increase in cancer patients over the past year. From around 36,000 new cancer patients to over 120,000 in America   Podcast Questions:   1. Ground meat causing relationship ending gas [21:00] Ryan C. says: Hey Guys, So this is my first question I’ve ever submitted (going to be doozy) over the years I’ve listened to this podcast (back through Andy and Greg). I first wanted to say, this podcast and Robb are hugely responsible for me quitting my 9-5 and pursuing my dream career in health and fitness. So thank you endlessly. Now the question regarding my “relationship ending gas”. It hasn’t quite ended the relationship yet, but I’m on thin ice if I don’t fix it or, maybe even worse, have to stop eating ground meat. Over the past year when I eat ground meat, I’ve tried beef, bison, turkey, etc. I become extremely gassy, next level, biochemical warfare, shut down a small mall type of next level. It also sometimes happens with just a fatty cut of beef. Now I assumed it was the super fatty stuff, so I cut back, but they still to be on par with each other. Which is basically the tiger woods of farts and sometimes Diarrhea. (This may be your worst question.) Anyway, when I search the internet for “why?”, the good ol’ google machine says shit like “stop eating meat you murderer, you’ll get ass cancer” or articles on how eating meat is the next AIDS, will destroy the earth, is transphobic, etc. It’s crazy and there is no real info I can find. So that is why I’m punishing you guys with this question, I really tried not to. I promise. What do you think this is? A meat allergy, bacterial thing… ass cancer? Help! Help my relationship…   2. Kidney Stones [28:09] Jared says: I'm 42 and relatively healthy, 6'1", 165lbs. I recently had a kidney stone where intense pain started, I went to the ER, and passed the stone all on the same day. My mom has had kidney stones before, but not as young as me. I was drinking 1 LMNT daily but not really doing any physical activity. I just like my water to taste like something. I did find some studies that too much sodium can be associated with kidney stones in some people, but that sounds like a very confounded observation to me. Do you think there is any association? Drinking too much LMNT in absence of physical activity has been associated with sporadic stomach aches for me in the past, so I had recently cut back over the past few months preceding this incident. Also, the doctor said that it could be from not drinking water frequently enough, which I am probably guilty of. The LMNT seems to help reduce the volume of water I drink because it quenches my thirst more than plain water, so maybe it is indirectly related? Anyway, would be happy to hear any thoughts you have. Fruit Sugar, Tired From BJJ | THRR119

Sugar & Fruit [11:17] Justin says: Hello Rob and Nicki, I read Wired to Eat and Sacred Cow and listen to your podcast every week. Your books and podcast have been such a blessing to my health journey. Thank you. I have a question regarding fruit and sugar. I eat clean (no processed carbs / sugar / avoid seed oils) and mainly follow the Paleo path with the exception  of pastured butter / cheese. I also practice daily intermittent fasting with a six hour eating window. I have cut out all added sugar (sweets, soda, etc) but typically have a bowl of organic blueberries, mixed fruit (pineapple, strawberries, etc) with chia seed pudding made with coconut milk after my lunch and dinner. Does the natural sugar in these fruits have a negative effect with regards to inflation and heart disease? Thanks so much for all you do. Justin 2. Jiu Jitsu and Nutrition [19:16] Strawberry (Yes my name is Strawberry) says: Overly exhausted the day after Jiu Jitsu grappling. I know you are a purple belt (which kudos!!) so I'm sure you have some real experience and great suggestions. I believe being this tired, I am not doing something right. In a nut shell I avoid bread and flour (unless my daughter makes cookies) I have a spoon of honey with my matcha or smoothie I avoid big meals first thing in the morning, I break my fast about 10-1030am, I'll have a handful of nuts, a smoothie with collagen (add fruit seldom). I have 2 cups of coffee a day My meals consist of veggies, proteins, and fat.  If there is a carb, its more at dinner time. I get out side as much as possible (an hour or more a day) (With diet, I'm no saint, so I know it's not perfect like above, but that is about 80% of the time) I read before bed (books not screens!) The days I know I'm going to go train, I do eat breakfast and try to fit in some extra food. Training is at night, we're done rolling by 8pm. I'M FREAKING TIRED!   My goal is to be energized and go to class 3 times a week. When I'm tired, I am grumpy, and my husband or kids don't deserve that !! They like an energized happy mama ^_^ Any suggestions? (-Follow up email after asking her some basic questions-) Welp… I don’t count calories or carbs. (Maybe that’s my problem) I’ll have complex carbs at night and especially after training (potato’s, pasta, homemade bread). I’ll add 1/2 banana or a handful of frozen strawberries to a smoothie during the day. I’ll sneak in extra carbs sometimes but not often.    Lunch, will typically be salad/veggie with protein and high fat. (Nuts, with olive oil on salad, etc) I got a free sample of LMNT from Roll Model camp and I’m going to purchase more cause it does help. Last night I had a pack right after class and I feel good today! I worship my sleep. My family picks on me because I think 930pm is late. But on nights I’m training I may not get to sleep til midnight from cooling off! Sadly my gym doesn’t have morning classes. The high intensity seems like my body needs to chill out for quite sometime. We got our sauna running (last 2 weeks) and after training I go in there and it helps but not always. I avoid screens cause it does fuck up my sleep but my husband,( his love language is watching shows together) so I’ll watch a show with him from time to time after class or weekends. With the summer, the kids home and husband, I’m trying to not always be a “stick in a mud” if you know what I mean? Sorry this was long winded!  But it’s actually helping me realize a few things….   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Chronic Wasting Disease In Deer, Digestion Woes, Avoiding Organic Foods | THRR118

Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour: https://twitter.com/davidludwigmd/status/1552636115139514368 Podcast Questions: 1. Chronic Wasting Disease in Deer and Elk [15:52] Kristi says: Hi Robb and Nicki, I have a new fear just when I am already worried about the future of meat, transportation, the economy, etc. I bought some elk liver from a ranch that sells grass-fed bison, elk, and beef. I went to fry it, and it did not smell the same as bison or beef liver. And while I'm sure that's just how elk liver smells, I started worrying about chronic wasting disease(CWD), which Joe Rogan brought up on the March 2020 episode with the infectious disease epidemiologist, Michael Osterholm. (The episode that in my mind started off the covid pandemic.) I ended up throwing away the elk meat, and then looked into chronic wasting disease more. So far, no known cases have spread to humans as vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease), but that was also true of mad cow disease, and I'm sure chronic wasting disease showing up in humans will take longer since way fewer people eat elk or deer. I am in one of the areas of North America where chronic wasting disease is present, and since I bought the meat from a farm, the elk is apparently tested (they send away the heads to get tested), however it says this doesn't guarantee they're free of CWD. Now I think I should just stick to beef/bison, since the downside of Jakob Creutzfeldt disease is so terrible, but I was also thinking if I do this I shouldn't even buy bison or beef from the same farm, since prions are notoriously hard to destroy, and would stick around on the butchering equipment. Do you have any knowledge or insight on this topic? Am I overreacting? Thanks and keep up the great work with the show. 2. Digestion Woes [23:40] Kelly says: Hi Robb and Nicki, hoping you can help me with everyone’s favorite topic, poo! I’ll cut to the chase. My BMs are a 6-7 on the Bristol stool chart, every day. Usually 3 times per day, and all before 9 am. This has been going on for a few months now. I don’t have any stomach pain or bloating, just really liquid poo. My diet is good, I eat mostly red meat, eggs, fruit, white rice, and I don’t exclude dairy or gluten because I’ve never had any sensitivity to it, but maybe that’s a good place to start? I do drink alcohol a couple times per week, but haven’t noticed a difference when I remove alcohol. I am also a coffee drinker, but I hope that’s not the culprit! Just looking for your thoughts on the best place to start, anything I should ask my doctor to run test-wise? I had an IgG test done a couple years ago and that didn’t show anything to avoid except things like chia seeds and some random things like that. Thank you both for all you do, me and my hubs listen every week and appreciate your common sense approach to health and recent policy topics. Robb and Nicki for President! 3. Organic? [29:08] Mark says: Hi Robb & Nicki, I've read Wired & Eat & Sacred Cow & drink LMNT (love, chocolate salt in goat milk is a favorite). I've been reading some of the comments from the FarmBabe basically that she now goes out-of-the-way "not" to buy/eat food labeled Organic (she seems not to like StoneyField or at least would like them to stop spreading misinformation) .  I've also read some of her battles with "Bobby" aka FlavCity.  It's hard to sort out if what she's saying is true or if as a non-organic farmer she's biased in any way.  Any insight would be helpful, especially considering current food prices.  I seem to always want to buy Organic, am I wasting my money? All the best, Mark Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Proper hydration is more than just drinking water. You need electrolytes too! Dutch Farmer Protest [9:19] Hi Robb and Nicki - First I'm sure you're wondering why I send you guys so much periodic email and don't just join THR. It's nothing against you guys (you're pretty dang awesome), I've been a member in the past and it was lovely, but I find it's too easy to let myself get sucked into the online communities and spend too much time with my phone in front of me. So I join for an occasional challenge or reset and then give a good Irish goodbye for a while. Anyway, something that came across my brain this week that made me furrow my brow. Have you heard about what is going on in the Netherlands? While I've heard gobs about reducing carbon emissions, this is the first I've heard anything about reducing nitrogen emissions and the Dutch government seem keen to force plenty of people to give up their livelihoods and food security to do it: this is the article I saw https://www.politico.eu/article/police-fire-dutch-farmer-protest-nitrogen-emission-cut/ (I found myself immediately cheering on the farmers but am trying to get some more info and perspective). Is nitrogen emission that big of a problem? Or is this just the next thing down the pike from carbon blinders? What gives?  Would love your thoughts. Thanks for the fiesty banter and witty analysis that I love you guys for. Keep on. Cheers, Christin ------------ “The honest message … is that not all farmers can continue their business,” the government admitted in a statement last month. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/explainer-dutch-farmers-protesting-emissions-85848026 The ruling coalition wants to cut emissions of pollutants, predominantly nitrogen oxide and ammonia, by 50% nationwide by 2030. Ministers call the proposal an “unavoidable transition” that aims to improve air, land and water quality. They warn that farmers will have to adapt or face the prospect of shuttering their businesses. “The honest message ... is that not all farmers can continue their business,” and those who do will likely have to farm differently, the government said in a statement this month as it unveiled emission reduction targets. Livestock produce ammonia in their urine and feces. The government in the past has called on farmers to use feed for their animals that contains less protein as a way of reducing ammonia emissions. The problem is compounded in the Netherlands, which is known for its intensive farming practices, with large numbers of livestock kept on small areas of land. Blood Glucose Testing Confusion, Red Meat Face Rash, Healthy Omega-6 | THRR116

Glucometer testing ... Puzzling results [15:08] Chris says: Hi Robb, Loved the audiobook thanks. I'm reaching out because I was inspired by your book and started experimenting with a glucometer and wanted to see how different carbs affect my blood sugar. I made some delicious whole wheat bread for the first time in my life and decided that was a perfect way to start my testing journey. However, the strange part is my blood sugar was actually lower 2 hours (3.7 mmol/L) after eating the bread and then began creeping back up after. This is the opposite of what I expected. According to Google, what's happening might be reactive hypoglycemia but I just wanted to know what you thought about this. According to the chapter in your book, it should be good news that my blood sugar is on the lower side after eating whole wheat bread. But something makes me feel like this isn't right. Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks so much!. Chris (Followup response after I replied to his email): I checked at increased intervals and my blood sugar actually peaked at 35 minutes and then was lower after an hour and by 2 hours I was back to my fasting level. I'm guessing the time doesn't matter as much as how high the peak was? Because it reached borderline pre diabetic levels after 35 minutes (138 mg/dl). But since I was back to normal after 2 hours like the book says, does this mean my body reacted favourably? 2. Face rashes when consuming red meat [24:16] John says: Hi Robb. Big fan here. Love your work, so glad you exist in this world. I can not figure our why red meat is giving me rashes on my face/eyes (nowhere else). I'll cut to it. The 2 times I have eaten strict carnivore (90% red meat, high quality) I get itchy burning rashes on my face primarily around my eyes about 3 weeks in. The skin gets very red and inflamed but no oozing, cracking, or bumps and is very sensitive to heat. No major effect on my eyes or vision other than some UV sensitivity on bright days. So far I have tried steroid creams, tea tree oil, ketoconazole cream and shampoo, apple cider vinegar, and ice packs; even had an optometrist diagnose blepharitis and give me an antibiotic gel (no effect). The ketoconazole shampoo (used on my face) was the only somewhat effective treatment... Ultimately, if I cut my red meat back to only 2-4 servings per week this almost completely goes way on its own. Even now, after being off carnivore for 6 weeks, if I have a steak for dinner my eye orbits will be a bit warm and puffy the next day (bison also triggers). I continue to apply the keto shampoo once a week. I am 41, 6'1" 190lbs. Weights and cardio. Sleep is pretty good. Mostly paleo but not many vegetables. Recent comprehensive bloods done, all good. No super crazy stress or anything obvious to point to. In addition, I feel fantastic on the carnivore diet minus the rash. Also, I never had any noticeable reaction to red meat until the first time I did carnivore a few years ago. I contacted Dr. Baker about this on IG a while back and he thought it might be a keto rash but I've never had this rash when eating keto/high-fat for several months at a time. Do you have any ideas? Thank you so much for your time!!! 3. Omega 6 [31:26] Marit says: Hey guy! Love the podcast. Been listening for 8+ years. I'm an RD and thought i had this topic pretty squared away, until I came across this article: https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/no-need-to-avoid-healthy-omega-6-fats Can you explain these findings or the studies they are sourcing? Low Glucose CGM Reading While Keto , Feeding Kids, Coffee Enemas | THRR115

Join The Healthy Rebellion Please Subscribe and Review: Apple Podcasts | RSS Submit your questions for the podcast here News topic du jour:   The Modern Diet Is a Biosecurity Threat Podcast Questions: 1. Very low CGM numbers with keto diet [7:47] Krista says: Hi Robb & Nikki! Love all the work you guys are doing!! LOVE Scared Cow!!! I'm a 44 year-old women who started a keto diet in November to combate 15lbs of hormonal weight gain (a really stressful 5 years threw everything off despite eating very clean, working out, prioritizing sleep, etc). I lost about 8lbs right out the gates and a few lbs are still coming off very slowly. At the start of my keto journey I also discovered I have a histamine intolerance (long Covid???) and have modified my diet and done all the things to limit my histamines. My histamines have slowly but surely decreased but still not totally in the clear. With all that being said, I've been using a CGM to look at how my body interperts food for a while now (even before my keto diet) and my sugars have always been low (average around 90) but the numbers did increase with my histamines but now that my histamines are more under control my numbers are back to normal....super steady and never going above 110 unless during workouts. Finally my question....in the last 4 days my cgm numbers have gone super low!!! I'm averaging 65. I still feel completely normal (this is not a new cgm) and am sleeping normal despite it going into the 40's. Nothing has changed in my life or diet My daily macros....1800ish calories 100ish grams of protein, 40ish grams of carbs and the rest fat. I weigh about 135 and all my hormone levels are back to normal (I work with a NaturoPath). My only thought is as my histamines continue to decrease is this my new normal in ketosis or ????? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! 2. Kids and food [14:33] Sydney says: I’d love to hear your approach to feeding your children at home and outside of the home (with grandparents, vacations, birthday parties, etc.). And how has that changed as they’ve grown? We’ve been able to just stick with our preferred food for the most part since they’ve been so little, but we are encountering more and more occasions where there are things offered that we wouldn’t usually let them eat in a million years! And we say no…but it doesn’t always sit quite right! Thoughts? Not so much worried about offending others…more so thinning about the ideas and beliefs we are instilling in them around nutrition. 3. Coffee Enemas [24:38] Doug says Robb: I’ve been a huge fan of yours for years. Thank you for all your content and all you do. I especially appreciate your integrity and truthfulness on all subjects. I have a family member who is trying to cure eczema with an elimination diet. What remains is mostly meat, fish, a limited selection of fruit along with a little bit of white rice. This person is lean, strong and very healthy, but has recently suffered painful outbreaks of eczema. The “guru“ we are following and doing this elimination diet recommends coffee enemas. Unfortunately, despite The enthusiasm of this guru, and many others on the inter-webzs, there is a surprising paucity of information on them out there. The closest thing to a theoretical explanation is that a vein in the colon leads right the liver and the caffeine/coffee stimulates the liver to pump out Lots of bile, with which aids in cleansing and flushing. I know, I know, cleansing and flushing and detoxes are mostly bullshit. But anecdotally, people seem to really love these coffee enemas. What’s the truth? Canadian beef now requiring warning label [19:27] Paul says Hey, Robb and Nikki I’m a long time listener and love all the amazing information you guys provide. It has been instrumental in my health journey. It was just recently announced that the Canadian government will now start putting warning labels on foods high in sugars, sodium and saturated fats. I agree with warning labels for sugars, but fear that putting a warning label on beef products may have a detrimental affect on the industry. What’s your thoughts? Thanks Paul 2. GABA [25:40] Lindsey says Hello I'd love to hear you talk about GABA supplement. Theres a product sold by Ned CBD that is called Mello - has magnesium and helps you relax/sleep. I love it and wanted to share with my Dad who struggles with good sleep. He's concerned about this ingredient and won't take it, he's had A-fib surgery. Really appreciate your insight!! Thanks, love the show and your information! 3. Paleolithic-Era Average Life Expectancy [27:54] Rob says: Hi, I've been following your work and others' in the field of ancestral health for many years now. I would like to think I've reached a point of knowledge/information saturation where I now only listen to very few podcasts in this genre, yours being my favorite because I really appreciate your logic and sense of humour. I've heard a lot about paleolithic-era short average life expectancy, high infant mortality rates (and death due to accidents/traumas), absent of chronic diseases in hunters-gatherers who get to live into old age. My question is very simple, couldn't it be that these are all very much related? Putting it bluntly, that high infant mortality + deaths from accidents/traumas are significantly "naturally selecting" out those who will otherwise live on and develop chronic diseases in the future (as I'm pretty sure all living organisms rarely just die randomly in nature). That they simply lived/live in such unforgiving environments that chronic diseases couldn't be afforded to manifest, and that it might be a survival bias behind what's more of a correlation than a causation?   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Protein For Kids [21:30] Andrea says: Hello Robb and Nicki, love the podcast and really appreciate the time and effort you guys put into your work for my benefit. My question is, how much protein is appropriate for children at different ages? I ask this because I understand that as an adult I need 1 gram of protein per pound of lean mass, but when I look at the googles for info on kids protein, it says half a gram per pound. This surprised me as I just assumed they would need more because they are growing. The sources I looked at were not where I normally go for my health advice so I am unsure if they are being influenced by the vegan agenda or if I am really feeding my kids too much protein. Any clarification you have would be great. 2. My Mattress Coil Is Transmitting Radio Waves Into My Brain [26:29] Craig says: Hello Robb and Nicki Long time listener from back in the day with Matt, I stuck around like a leach as I had nowhere else to go... One of my wife's health "fill in the blank" people stated that coils in box springs can cause cancer as they magnify the radio waves coming from the outside world, or Mars.  You remember the movie Mars Attacks, it can happen. My background in electronics states that the opposite will happen, it will dampen the waves like a Faraday Cage. So what gives?  Here's the link:  https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/left-sided-cancer-blame-your-bed-and-tv/ Thanks guys!!! (Niki, we can actually hear you now, most of of the time)  Yea!!!! 3. Bioenergetic View of Health [33:58] Tim says: Hey Robb, first just want to mention, I’ve been a huge fan for years. I’ve read Wired to Eat and Sacred Cow, have listened to many of your podcasts, and I just love you as a human even though we’ve never met. I could tell you have a really big heart and you genuinely want to help the world to the best of your ability. To my question: I’m curious about your thoughts on Ray Peat’s bioenergetic view of health. Maybe some context for listeners, the bioenergetic view, at a high level, is about increasing energy at the cellular level and decreasing stress, which in turn, would increase your metabolism. Increasing energy/metabolism gives the body more resources to perform all the necessary functions the body needs to perform (i.e. digestion, healing, fighting illness, etc.). To do this, one of the main things he recommends is to eat sugar since that is the most preferred form of fuel that our cells use to convert into energy. The sugars that are generally recommended are simple sugars, like sucrose, which is found in fruit, fruit juice, honey, and white sugar. He recommends these sugars because they are easily absorbable, digestible, and converted into energy. He believes low blood sugar increases stress hormones (like glucagon, adrenalin, and cortisol), increases free fatty acids, and increases tissue breakdown and fat release to provide fuel for the body. This leads to low energy/metabolism/thyroid function and ultimately puts us in a chronically stressed state. He also argues that the problem is not sugar, but everything else that we consume alongside the sugar in our modern diets, particularly PUFAs being the most destructive to our bodies.   Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT.
