33. Is procrastination a DIRTY WORD for ADHDers?
Hello, stunning ND brains! Ready to join us for some juicy ADHD dilem lems while sipping your metaphorical (or literal) white wine in the sun?In this week's dilemma, a newly diagnosed ADHD mum asks for help. She's trying to build her dream Etsy shop but keeps getting sucked into hyperfixation rabbit holes on her computer (cute), and is feeling frustrated at her lack of productivity. Sound familiar? We discuss:Unconscious Scrolling: It’s not laziness; it’s unmet needs tapping us on the shoulder. 👀Dysregulation 101: Why we’re stuck in the rinse-and-repeat cycle of procrastination—and how to spot it while it’s happening.Sensory Needs FTW: Sometimes, focus is just one pair of noise-cancelling glasses (huh?) away. Who knew?Body Doubling Magic: Find a bestie (or a stranger on FocusMate) to miraculously unlock your productivity. Mirror neurons for the win, baby.Grace’s Pearls of Wiz:Grace reads from her upcoming book, The ADHD Focus Friend (Pre-Order it here!) dropping gems like:“At its core, procrastination is resistance. Part of us wants to move ahead with a goal, but other (louder) parts are pumping the brakes because they don't have all the information, security or emotional reassurance they need."IREGGY SEGGY:We're playing our second round of 2 truths and a lie, or if we're Tara, are we (yet again... accidentally) playing 2 lies and a truth?? RECS:Tara is recommending the Christmas song: White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin, and bonus rec: Storm on YouTube.Grace is recommending 'Neurodivergent Birthdays' (inspired by ADHD influencer Ellie Midds!)Don’t RSD even if you think you’re allowed to just this once, you’re actually not. Okay? Also join our Patreon (because cute!) and that's where we'll be dropping that sensory needs poster download soon! 👀Sending alll the love!Your ADHD Besties Tara & Grace 💕----------------------------🦋 WANT MORE ADHD BESTIES? 30. ADHD & ANXIETY: Tara's story of motherhood, postpartum anxiety & depression 💜
Hi besties, we have something a little bit different for you this week!First up, we're struggggling to do admin tasks, but on the plus side we were so bored at the bank that we used the hand sanitiser 200 times so our hands are super dry 🫠In this raw and honest episode of Your ADHD Besties, Tara opens up about her personal journey with anxiety and how it intersects with her ADHD. She dives deep into the complexities of living with anxiety from childhood all the way through her postnatal experience, where she also faced postpartum depression. Tara shares how ADHD has shaped her experience with her mental health, and how navigating both ADHD and anxiety has sometimes been a tricky balance.Throughout this unfiltered conversation, Tara explores the role of medication in her life—how anxiety medication (SSRIs) and ADHD stimulants have played a part, and the challenges of managing multiple diagnoses. She also opens up about her experiences with dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and OCD, and how these conditions impact her and their interplay with ADHD.If you're struggling with depression or anxiety, know that you're not alone and help is available. Reach out to a mental health professional, talk to someone you trust, or find a helpline in your country here.RECS:• Tara recommends the Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette... And if you think that transgender men usually have female ADHD?" We discuss ADHD intersectionality, the interplay between nature and nurtureWhether there any biological underpinnings of ADHD in women?Whether certain ADHD traits are more likely to appear in AFAB peopleHow to separate ADHD traits/symptoms from our personalities? 28. HOW TO: fall in love with your STIMS, manage sensory clashes & reframe ADHD inconsistency
ADHD BABESSSS! We’re back for Season 2! In today’s episode Tara is joining us from East Java 🌺, while poor Grace is joining us from germ-ville 🤧.Grace makes a retraction and apology about her pronunciation of the word Appalachian 🏔️ and promises not to RSD (see: she will RSD about it forever).Dilemma 1: "How do I find a hobby I like and actually stick with it?"We discuss letting go of the idea of having to ‘achieve’ hobbies and see them through to completion and that hobbies are often for regulation itself, rather than achieving an end point. Striving for consistency and completion when your brain is interest-driven and divergent can often lead to us feeling Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) and/or feeling negative or resentful towards the hobby.Dilemma 2: "My son and I have clashing sensory issues 😫 - HELP!!"We discuss sensory profiles, occupational therapy, and give some suggestions on how to make sure both of your sensory needs are met. We explore sensory avoiding and sensory seeking types, and the challenge of integrating stimuli. Ireggy Seggy: This week we asked YOU guys what burning questions you had for us. We mostly ponder extremely personal and profound questions like ‘if you were a dinosaur, what kind would you be?’ and ‘what is the best ice-cream flavour?’, in which Grace learns some things about Tara that she can’t unsee... but we also cover some more serious questions like how to speak to family and friends about your diagnosis.REC LINKS:Grace recommends: Using your sick leave to smoke through full seasons of TV series, particularly season 3 of the Netflix series Heartstopper, which she feels is not only queer-affirming, but also neuro-affirming and healing for Boomers, Gen-Xers and Millennials to watch as it is so different to our lived experiences growing up 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️. Tara recommends: Hair shampoo brush things (like this) they feel amazing, but also help to keep hair cleaner for longer, and may help with hair growth 🪮💁♀️We will be back in your insanely gorgeous ears next THURSDAYYY!and until then DON’T RSD (we're watching ----------------------------🦋 WANT MORE ADHD BESTIES? 26. "I constantly interrupt people and I feel terrible about myself"
Oh hiiii, ADHD Bestie babes! 🌟This week, Grace (almost) becomes the neighborhood hero by saving the day from controlled burn-offs, while Tara triumphs over PMDD for the first time since she was 13.Dilemma: Our gorgeous Kiwi listener is feeling serious RSD when it comes to interrupting people during conversations. We discuss why ADHDers do this and how to see this trait from different perspectives, including how to own it and advocate for your ADHD brain as a way to open up conversations and express empathy for someone.Ireggy Seggy: 🐷 PIG in the middle (A.K.A The positive interrupting game). This week we play a torturous game where one person must speak slo-o-o-wly and the other must gleefully interrupt them. It's as unhinged as it sounds and Tara forgets how to geography. 🫠 🌎REC LINKS: Tara's Rec: The Middleditch and Schwartz completely improvised comedy specials on Netflix. 25. Navigating workplace conflict with ADHD 🌶️ 🤐
Hi very beautiful neurodivergent brains! This week, we’re watering our fake plants and celebrating our birthdays like the indulgent little princes we are!Dilemma 1: Our lovely listener Kerri feels like she comes across as intimidating, and it’s triggering her RSD. We chat about advocating for ADHD in the workplace and embracing your unique intensity while also showing your softer side. Remember, two things can be true: you can be passionate and intense and also a kind/gentle person!Dilemma 2: A cute little Bimbo Marshall comes out of the woodwork with a question about phone calls and the stress of feeling disconnected to the person on the other end, almost like she’s talking to a disembodied voice. We discuss the challenges of emotional processing and body language on calls, and why many ADHDers find emailing and texting way easier than chatting on the phone. We dive into some practical tips for how to escape those moments when you’re feeling “chat-trapped” and mananging the overwhelm of keeping the conversation going like calming your nervous system right before the call, using social scripts—like chatting about the weather to ease into the conversation and Grace gives the 'untip’ of calling when the background noise is terrible and just blaming it on that!Ireggy Seggy: It’s time for “ADHD or NAYDHD: The Zoo Edition”!
