The Danger of Seed Oils & Finding a Healthier Option - w/ Jeff Nobbs | Empowering Neurologist EP159

We've had so many discussions that's far about the importance of dietary fat for health and longevity. But to be clear, the type of fat we consume is of incredible importance. These days our diets seem to be loaded with vegetable oils and seed oils, and as we will learn, these are generally quite threatening to our health. In fact vegetable oils are only recently introduced into human nutrition with global production increasing 1600% since the early 1900s.   There is a strong correlation between the increase consumption of vegetable oils and seed the oils with the incidence of severe chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even various neurological conditions.    Today we are going to explore a new type of oil called cultured oil, prepared by fermentation and subsequent filtration. Leading this industry is a company called Zero Acres Farms, and as such, I have reach doubt to its co-founder and CEO, Jeff Nobbs, to explore exactly what this company is doing as well as the health benefits of their product.   ====   TIMESTAMPS:  0:00 Intro 2:28 Realizing the Danger of Omega 6 10:10 Low Fat Diets 12:35 HNE 17:00 Inflammation & Lanolin Acid 20:38 Environmental Impact of Seed Oils 24:00 Saturated Fat 28:15 New Way to Produce Oils 33:36 What to Look for while buying 39:02 Conclusion   ====   Jeff Nobbs:    Jeff Nobbs is the co-founder and CEO of Zero Acre Farms, a food company replacing destructive vegetable oils with healthier, more sustainable oils and fats made by fermentation. Prior to Zero Acre Farms, Jeff also co-founded the fast casual restaurant chain Kitava, food security non-profit HelpKitchen, and rewards shopping platform Extrabux. He has also served as COO for Perfect Keto and General Manager of Rakuten after it acquired Extrabux. Young Forever: How to Reverse Biological Aging - w/ Dr. Mark Hyman | The Empowering Neurologist EP158

There’s so much information being promulgated these days seemingly focused on the notion of “anti-aging.”   Unfortunately, so much of this information focuses on techniques to allow us to basically appear younger.   But we are now at a level of understanding as it relates to the process of aging where we can indeed intervene to slow or even reverse the process. So, while the clock of our chronological time continues to move forward, our biological age meaning the health and functionality of our bodies, is clearly receptive to modification.   My longtime friend, Dr. Mark Hyman, has written a new book, Young Forever, that focuses on providing us the tools to bring about age reversal. This notion is no longer fanciful, but rather deeply supported in our most respected scientific literature.   Young Forever, not only validates that we can indeed turn back multiple hallmarks of aging, but, most importantly, provides us with the low tech ways to bring this about. This isn’t a book about the latest, unapproachable scientific studies. It’s about what we can all do, right now, to live longer and healthier lives.   Thank you Mark, for this wonderful contribution.     ====   TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 2:06 Changing the Way we see Aging 7:26 Targeting Hallmarks of Aging 14:21 Mitochondrial Function 18:40 Muscle: The Currency of Longevity 29:40 Finding the Right Spot 33:07 Aging as a Disease 36:44 Identifying ‘The Why’ 40:18 Conclusion   ====   Dr. Mark Hyman is a practicing family physician and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in the field of Functional Medicine. He is the founder and director of The UltraWellness Center, Senior Advisor for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, a fourteen-time New York Times best-selling author, and Board President for Clinical Affairs for The Institute for Functional Medicine. He is the host of one of the leading health podcasts, The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dr. Hyman is a regular medical contributor to several television shows and networks, including CBS This Morning, Today, Good Morning America, The View, and CNN.   Buy Young Forever: The Secrets to Living Your Longest, Healthiest Life By Dr. Mark Hyman   ___________________________ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidperlmutter/   Website: https://www.drperlmutter.com/   Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDRl_UAXxbHyOOjklnA0dxQ/?sub_confirmation=1See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Smarter NOT Harder: The Secret to Weight Loss - w/ Dave Asprey | The Empowering Neurologist EP 157

Maybe we have it all wrong. Maybe we are overdoing it, especially as it relates to things like exercise. Should we tap into the “power of laziness?”   In Dave Asprey's new book, SMARTER NOT HARDER: The Biohacker's Guide to Getting the Body and Mind you Want, Asprey makes a compelling point that indeed less may be more. He describes how we live in a time where we finally have such a level of understanding of human physiology that we are indeed able to hack into ancient pathways to bring about health and vitality by implementing knowledge based interventions.   The approaches he describes go well beyond simply engaging in very short burst of high intensity activity, but also include important nutritional recommendations, and even ways hack the brain using exciting new technologies.   As always, I do enjoy my time with Dave Asprey. The conclusions he reaches are always based upon a deep level of exploration and always seem valuable.   ====   Timestamps:  0:00 Intro 2:27 The Power of Laziness 7:58 What DOESN’T Work 12:06 Metrics & Data 15:11 Increasing Energy/ Motivation 17:30 Phytic Acid 21:15 Oxalic Acid 24:07 Night Shades & Fermented Foods 28:15 Danger of Imitation Meat Products 32:00 Fat Consumption 38:36 Supplements 42:01 Enhancing the Brain & Vision 57:09 Conclusion     ====   Dave Asprey is an acclaimed entrepreneur, four-time New York Times best-selling science author, host of the top 100 podcast, The Human Upgrade, and CEO of Upgrade Labs.    Known as the “Father of Biohacking,” Dave has worked with world-renowned doctors, researchers, scientists, and global mavericks over the last two decades to uncover the latest, most innovative methods, techniques, and products that enhance mental and physical performance. Preventing Obesity: The Myth of Calorie Counting - with Dr. Fung | The Empowering Neurologist EP.156

What should we eat? I ask this question in the context of the incredible rates of obesity that we are now seeing, virtually worldwide. Today we will spend time with Dr. Jason Fung author of the book The Obesity Code. This is a landmark book that powerfully lays out why we are continuing to gain weight. It dispels the notion that dietary fat threatens to make us gain weight as well as the unfounded idea of calories in versus calories out as an explanation for why we gain weight.   Dr. Fung clearly focuses on the importance of the hormone, insulin, in terms of obesity, and certainly in terms of diabetes as well. He outlines a very straightforward plan that is in perfect alignment with current science. Melatonin - Why All the Interest? - with Dr. Deanna Minich | The Empowering Neurologist EP 155

Melatonin has taken center-stage in terms of interest from both the scientific community as well as the general population. And there are really good reasons for all this attention. Recently, with the Covid pandemic, melatonin has been looked upon as a way of "boosting the immune system." We've looked at melatonin for many years as a sleep aid and as a way of dealing with jet lag. We know that melatonin has antioxidant properties and even anti-inflammatory activity as well.   But, all of these ideas and information are ultimately confusing, to say the least. That's why today we're spending time with my good for friend, Dr. Deanna Minich, who has recently authored a terrific paper on this fascinating but confusing subject.. We talk about this paper, why she became interested in this fascinating molecule found in animals as well as plants,, and most importantly, what we can all do to benefit from this exciting new research on our Empowering Neurologist interview.   ====   0:00 Intro 2:47 Why Melatonin? 4:16 Plant Melatonin 5:45 How the body produces melatonin  9:18 Vitamin D vs Melatonin  12:50 Anti-inflammatory Activity  15:30 Aging & Mitochondria Decline 26:03 Supplementing 35:02 Melatonin Binding to Vitamin D 37:09 Darkness Deficiency  46:06 Conclusion   ====   Deanna Minich, MS, PhD, CNS, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner (IFMCP), is a nutrition scientist, international lecturer, teacher, and author, with over twenty years of experience in academia and in the food and dietary supplement industries. UNfollow your Passion to Find Fulfillment - with Terri Trespicio | EP 154

We are so often told that one of our fundamental goals in life is to find our “passion” and follow it. If we can identify this goal, we are led to believe, then everything will magically fall into place. According to Terri Trespicio, our guest on the podcast today, if we are busy looking for our passion we might well miss out on opportunities that may come our way. These opportunities may be related to our work or even our relationships. Terri makes it clear that it’s “OK not to know” as it relates to finding our passion, and that surpasses, if we are available for them, can be very fulfilling. Many people seem to spend a great deal of time trying to figure out “what they are supposed to do.” But as Terri, quoting her mother counters, “You create life by living it.” Reading Terri’s new book, UNfollow Your Passion, might well lead the reader to recognize that he or she is letting someone else set the rules for what is their life. And the book helps us understand both how this happens, and importantly, what we can do to put ourselves back in the driver’s seat.   ==== TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 2:10 Picking a Career Path 6:11 Romantic Partnership  8:49 Comfort and Discomfort 18:38 The Things that we “Swallow” 23:14 Learning from MLMs 28:45 Tools for Redirection 40:25 Conclusion  ====   Terri Trespicio is an award-winning writer, in-demand speaker, and brand advisor whose TEDx talk, “Stop Searching for Your Passion,” has been viewed more than seven million times.
