73: Strengthening Marriage: Tips and Takeaways That Have Changed Our Marriage

“Does anyone stay together anymore?” And “is anyone actually happy in their marriage, or is it all smoke and mirrors?” These are some of the comments I saw on social media a couple weeks ago after the announcement of Dave and Rachel Hollis’s divorce. While we obviously have no idea what happened there, it sparked a lot of conversations in my life and even between Neil and me about what really keeps people together and what the makeup is of a happy marriage. Today we’re sharing some of the tips, advice and actionable takeaways that have greatly helped strengthen our marriage that we hope will help you too. Show Notes: Talk “In Praise of Those Who Serve” Dieter F. Uchtdorf https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2016/04/in-praise-of-those-who-save?lang=eng  Talk “Eternal Marraige” F. Burton Howard https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2003/04/eternal-marriage?lang=eng Talk by President Gordon B. Hinckley  https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1997/03/a-conversation-with-single-adults?lang=eng “There seems to be a superstition among many thousands of our young [men and women] who hold hands and smooch in the drive-ins that marriage is a cottage surrounded by perpetual hollyhocks to which a perpetually young and handsome husband comes home to a perpetually young and [beautiful] wife. When the hollyhocks wither and boredom and bills appear the divorce courts are jammed. …“Anyone who imagines that bliss [in marriage] is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed.“[The fact is] most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. …“Life is like an old-time rail journey—delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed.“The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride” (“Big Rock Candy Mountains,” Deseret News, 12 June 1973, A4).Produced by Dear MediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

70: Jennifer Borget on Black Lives Matter: How to be Part of REAL Changes in Anti-Racism

After an emotional and historical day, watching the nation and even the world come together to amplify the message that Black Lives Matter in response to George Floyd’s death, I reached out to my friend Jennifer Borget on blackout Tuesday and she graciously agreed to come back on the podcast and discuss anti-racism with me. She also has an incredibly unique perspective as a black woman in an inter-racial marriage, married to a white police officer, so we talked about her experiences and suggestions on uniting instead of dividing people during this time. She explains why the phrase “all lives matter” isn’t helpful and what IS helpful and productive in supporting this message, how to stand up and say something tactfully when someone makes a racist comment, and what to do if you’ve messed up in the past and want to make it right. I’m so thankful to Jennifer for sharing her voice today and for the positive influence she is in my life and so many others. www.drinkhydrant.com/mintarrow for 25% off your first order! Show Notes:Cherish 365 blog https://cherish365.com/Diversity and inclusion posts/info https://cherish365.com/category/diversity-inclusion/Jennifer’s blog posts explaining “black lives matter” https://cherish365.com/your-fear-is-killing-my-family-why-are-you-supporting-my-white-cop-and-not-my-black-son https://cherish365.com/listen-you-dont-know-everything-about-cops-and-black-lives-matter/Jennifer’s Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jenniferborget/Jennifer’s Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Cherish365Blog/https://cherish365.com/no-youre-not-colorblind-thats-ok/  Produced by Dear MediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

66: Honesty and Integrity: Why This Lost Virtue is so Vital in Business and a Happy Life

A few nights ago, Neil and I got into a deep discussion about the need for integrity and how it seems to be less and less common in the world, and more and more accepted as just “the way things are” or have to be. We felt strongly that today’s episode needed to be on honesty and integrity, in business, in our personal lives, and in recovery. Neil shares his perspective as a recovering addict and I share some examples of business and personal times where I’ve faced the option to be honest or yield to temptation to cut corners, and we share why we believe honesty really does pay off in the end. Show Notes:Gordon B. New York Times best selling author and soon to be podcast host Greg McKeown shares with me today some of the philosophies that he teaches in his well-known book Essentialism, a book that quite honestly transformed my life! He talks about the art of saying no, of really getting back to what matters most in life, and how that can set you free to live the life you were intended to live. He shares some fun examples of how essentialism has guided him as a father and how he and his wife have seen their family and children take on this mindset of essentialism, and the great blessings and rewards that have come from doing so.
