029 Dr. Neema Moraveji: Master Your Breathing

What can the power of breath actually do for reducing stress in our busy society? Can tracking our own breathing be a catalyst for new healthy behavior changes? On today's show, we answers those powerful questions and more, with inventor and world-class expert in the design and study of technologies that promote healthy and high-performing states of mind, Dr. Neema Moraveji. The Power of The Breath Dr. Moraveji is co-founder and chief product officer of Spire, the first wearable to track and influence both activity and state of mind. Early this year, I was fortunate enough to attend the 2015 Quantified Self Conference at Fort Mason center in San Francisco, where I met Dr. Neema and experienced his invention of a groundbreaking breath tracking and mindfulness technology device live and in person. The results were shocking. Support Wellness Force Radio:  RATE & REVIEW in iTunes | SUBSCRIBE in iTunes  In just a few short minutes after working with Dr. Neema while using SPIRE, I felt the most relaxed I'd been all week. Pretty amazing, especially when you consider that over 10 people were watching me in a crowded, loud and busy expo floor throughout the entire exercise! Tracking Our Breath Beyond just a wearable device, his invention SPIRE is literally transforming the way that wellness and fitness use breathing techniques, cues, and strategies for better health. We understand that tracking steps and calories is the quantified self in real life action, but can the breath tell us powerful insights about our health and how we manage stress? As director of Stanford University’s Calming Technology Lab, he studies how interactive products can mitigate the damaging and distracting effects of acute and chronic stress. He teachers the popular “Designing Calm” at the Stanford Design School and his work has been covered in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and NPR among other esteemed publications. Dr. Moraveji is co-founder and chief product officer of Spire, the first wearable to track and influence both activity and state of mind. Master Your Breathing His TEDxBayArea talk "What Your Breath Is Telling You," Dr. Moraveji uncovers the way you breathe shows how much tension, calm, and focus you have in your life. He discusses how the millennia-year old science of respiratory psychophysiology can be leveraged today with wearable sensors to help us improve focus, reduce stress, and live with balance in daily life. Dr. Neema received his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland at College Park and his M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University. He received his Ph.D., “Augmented Self-Regulation“, from Stanford University.  Listen As Dr, Neema Uncovers: How new technology can help us in designing calm in our lives The power of breath on weight loss, wellness, and health How to discover what makes you calm and focused at work and at home Links From Today's Show Dr. Neema's work at Stanford Spire Website Mark Divine - Box breathing technique GIFT: Save 20% off SPIRE as a holiday gift from Dr. Neema Buy SPIRE Now Awareness  "When we describe why Spire measures breath, almost all people have an ‘a-ha’ moment given their personal experience with the power of breath." - Dr. Neema Moraveji "Your state of mind influences your brain and cardiorespiratory system quite rapidly. 028 Physiotherapist Caitlin Reid: Life After Injury

On boxing day in 2013, Caitlin broke her back in an accident and burst the first vertebrae of her lower spine.  In the few weeks while she was in a full back brace, she grew nauseous from the medication, frustrated from the pain, and began to realize that she'd have to pull from deep inside herself to face the challenges of what would come next. Support Wellness Force Radio:  RATE & REVIEW in iTunes | SUBSCRIBE in iTunes    Not getting the advice and healing strategies she needed from traditional medicine, she decided to rely on her emotional strength and ultimately had to make a powerful choice: Either be a victim or a victor of her circumstance. Life After Injury  Thanks to the fracture type and her knowledge of the benefits of holistic medicine, she made a full recovery through dedication, hard work, and most importantly, the right mindset. She reflected on all the patients she’d treated who had told her they felt alone, frustrated with their medication and had no idea how to start their road to recovery and wellness. She knew first-hand what it’s like to experience a road-block in your life, whether it be an injury, work stress, or lack of motivation. Caitlin started Pilates one week later, and was at the gym every third day; also participating in a fun meditation and mindfulness class to help her overcome the frustration of having an injury (and wearing a very hot brace in the Australian summer!)   The Power To Change Even though she was frustrated with her injury, she also felt so incredibly lucky: Not only because she was certain she would make a full recovery, but thanks to her professional knowledge, she knew exactly what it would take to get back to her active life. Her story on Wellness Force Radio is that of overcoming the inner and outer challenges of this devastating injury, and the road to creating mobility, energy, and being able to thrive again in her profession and in her life. Thanks to Caitlin's both professional experience working with clients around the world, plus her own personal experience of this serious injury, she now helps clients globally with a realistic, balanced and motivational approach towards health and wellbeing. 026 Julianna Raye: A Personal Trainer For Your Mind

Today on the show is one of the most sought after mindfulness trainers in the world, Julianna Raye. After training individuals and groups for over 15 years, Julianna brings her expertise and gifts to share with Wellness Force Radio. Support Wellness Force Radio:  RATE & REVIEW in iTunes |  SUBSCRIBE in iTunes | I've been so pumped to be able to bring on a guest like Julianna that not only is a master at empowering others to change their thinking, but most importantly, to change their behavior through the power of mindfulness and meditation. Numerous scientific studies have shown clear and wide ranging benefits of mindfulness including stress and anxiety reduction, strengthened immune system, heightened EI and creativity to name just a few. In fact, Julianna herself was drawn to mindfulness 18 years ago, to manage debilitating anxiety. With over 90 weeks of immersive silent retreat training in both mindfulness and zen in addition to her daily practice, Julianna has racked up 12,000 plus hours of formal practice time, rewiring her brain and creating a new normal for herself. This enables her to truly be of service to her clients. Currently, Julianna is developing onsite and online mindfulness training for enterprise clients and consumers as well as delivering keynotes, privately coaching executives in sales and leadership, performance professionals, TV personalities, entrepreneurs engaged in personal growth, and group training company leaders interested in preventative health care and enhancing the work environment, through mindfulness meditation. In a recent study at UCLA comparing long-term meditators’ brains with non-meditators, the results of Julianna’s MRI led to interviews on ABC, Globo and Reuters news outlets, about the benefits of Mindfulness practice. Using the system of Basic Mindfulness, which has been researched at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Vermont, and Harvard Medical Center (with breakthrough results), Julianna’s emphasis is on helping clients find those specific strategies most relevant for their life and professional environment. As an expert in the system, Julianna teaches clients how to strategically implement practice for specific challenges and practice in action, leading to accelerated growth, giving clients a way to develop skills on the go and providing invaluable tools for self empowerment. Just as a physical trainer improves your workout, working with a mindfulness meditation trainer deepens and strengthens your skills, providing the necessary perspective, feedback and support so you maximize the potential of your practice. Mindfulness provides an excellent complement to any other self-healing work you may be doing. In fact, your practice will enhance all the activities of your life. 025 Reed Davis: The Hidden Causes of Weight Gain

What do we do when diet and exercise don't work? Do hormones and our nervous system hold the key? Today, I'm excited and honored to have Reed Davis on Wellness Force Radio to unlock the answers and uncover the hidden causes of weight gain. Support Wellness Force Radio:  RATE & REVIEW in iTunes |  SUBSCRIBE in iTunes | Reed is the Founder of the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) Certification Course.  He is known as one of the most successful and experienced clinicians in the world, having provided functional lab assessments to over 10,000 clients for hormone, adrenal, digestive, immune and detoxification issues as well as infections, infestations, food sensitivities and chronic stress-related problems. Reed served as a Health Director and Case Manager for over 15 years and now teaches a course in functional medicine with over 2,000 trainees in 50 countries. He is also a Clinical Advisor at BioHealth Laboratory where he helps doctors interpret lab test results and develop natural protocols to restore function instead of just treating the symptoms. While serving for many years as the CNT and Case Manager, Reed Davis made his own observations about who got better and who did not. The patients who improved the most were the ones working as close to the underlying cause as possible, and not simply treating the symptoms. Wanting to help as many people as possible, Reed employed functional lab testing as it applies to nutrition and other natural protocols with thousands of patients. Educating others became a passion and provided a mission that Reed carries out to this day. While systematizing the work, Reed came to the realization that he had discovered an emerging field. He named this growing body of work Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® and founded the certification course. Trust me, I've had my own struggles around the deleterious ones and quieting the big bad wolf inside my head. At times of victimhood, my life has even felt like just one big hurdle after another. Can you relate? When I was 8 years old I watched my mom get carried out on a stretcher.  Her illness created a certain type of fear file that I'd access at pivotal times in my life. When I was 16, I missed a month of school, had reconstructive sinus surgery and decimated my gut flora with a year of antibiotics. With limited health knowledge and ways to cope as an adolescent, eating unhealthy foods allowed me to hide for awhile... Since then, I've learned that doing the real transformational work, both on the inside and the outside, including my mind and my body, has made all the difference. I've ultimately learned that we all need more wellness, and we also need each other.
